Definitely not overrated. The run doesn’t have to be literally perfect to be worthy of its high praise. At the end of the day, it’s clearly one of the best runs of any of Marvels A list characters that managed to do something different, while paying homage to the character’s history
Feel like it should be great for at least 50% of its run though, but that's just me. I'd rather at least give my honest opinion on a series than just repeat what everyone else is saying
@@MaddoggComics "I'd rather just give my honest opinion on a series rather than repeat what everyone else is saying" So are we. Those that are saying the hype is well deserved are aslo giving their honest opinions aswell.
@@David_Scar That's all good, a reasoned debate is nice, but the narrative seems to be, 'You're wrong because it's great' and I spent nearly 14 minutes saying what I liked and didn't to give it a fair overview, and the vast majority of the comments don't even refute what I didn't like, like the majority of the second half, so maybe I should just move to following the crowd since it's not benefitting my understanding of the series being honest 🤷♂️
As a Hulk fan, after being without Bruce Banner Hulk for a few years it was quite exhilarating to get a horror take on the Hulk (like older stories). I respect your opinion on the series as it did have a tiny drop or lul in the second half of the run but I love it all the same.
The whole story is great, and let’s be real here man, you know pretty damn well there hasn’t been a IMPACTING comic with hulk in a long time, so reading this brings life to this character and even more fans. There’s several Omnis on your shelf that aren’t even 40% as good as this hulk arc is. And btw you saying it has been done before doesn’t mean it’s terrible because it subverts expectations and goes places it actually hasn’t before. Also, you don’t seem to understand the hulks psyche from this review that well. Maybe go back and read Peter David’s hulk runs?
I can say reading it month to month definitely gives more enjoyment for the 2nd half of the series. I agree that that there was some filler in the back half, but overall enjoyed it and hope you enjoy it more once you revisit!
The first couple of arcs were great, but the book just goes off the deep end. It turns into weird pulpy science, metaphysical, and philosophical at times its a drag to read. The ending was also very underwhelming. Not many exciting moments in here. It's not an awful book, but meh.
Have to say I don't think it's overrated at all. The Hulk a lot like Venom in that he can be a 1 dimensional character Where as Venom only became decent under Donny Cates. At least Hulk had David, Pak and now Ewing. Ewing's run on Venom's decent to be fair. Anyway back to Hulk I personally like all the Multipersonaltity Hulk as it harks back to Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I must be the only person who hated Thor: Ragnarok because they had struggled for years to to do a good Hulk Film and after the end of Age of Ultron They could have done a really good Planet Hulk and even have World War Hulk and the Warbound as the new big bads after MCU Thanos. Instead they made both Thor and Hulk jokes Anyway I grew up on the trippy Cosmic Marval stuff like Adam Warlock and the Etrernals I loved Immortal first for the Body Horror and then i could see that it was going into the cosmc side. But fair play something i might like you might hate and vice versa Horses for courses isn't it anyway glad you liked the first arc
Brooooo ! I appreciate your honest opinion. And I absolutely see your point of view, but man this is some of the best modern runs from Marvel to date. This felt like a wayyyy darker continuation from what Bruce Jones started in his run. Great review bro !
Ah, I'm really glad I watched this! I read the first 10-12 issues on Marvel Unlimited as they were adding each issue to the app. I dug it but decided I'd rather wait until they wrapped it up before following on. This will help temper expectations. The only thing I wish had been addressed is the one-shots like King In Black: Immortal Hulk, Defenders: The Best Defense issues, or any other Immortal Hulk off-shoot penned by Ewing. Were they worth checking out and did they add anything to the overall story?
Been eagerly awaiting your full thoughts on this series. I know you said you were disappointed a while back. But I do quite fancy the horror aspect this series is supposed to have heard from other people it drops off about halfway as well. I mean being honest I probably won't rush to buy for my collection but someday might take a chance digitally or something.
Read it, sold it. Wasn't a fan of the body horror and didn't think it added to the story. Art was OK. Story was fantastic in points and OK in others. Overall quite decent, but wasn't for me.
if anything should be up for critique, it certainly wasn't Bennett's art. the body horror of the series was what kept it alive, in spite of the political satire that Ewing passed as writing towards the middle point of the series. almost killed it. Bennett apologized for the "jewery" incident, citing it as an accident. Its the best run on the character since Peter David. Perhaps the conflict between the opposing views created something special. Ewing's psychological perspective and attention to the lore definitely contributed something that brought Hulk back towards the "monster" he was originally intended to be by Lee and Kirby. its (the art and the themes) not pretty. But I think that's the point.
Good review. I agree the series started off strongly with the plot focusing around the body horror genre. However it soon lost its way with the metaphysical navel-gazing.
This vid will be interesting to come back to when I read the whole run! Appreciate the thorough review without going into spoiler territory man. Keep it up!
i generally enjoyed the run.....however personally i hated it when the messaging stopped the story in its tracks to beat the reader over the head with it, good example is when they are in the hell realm and the reporter goes off on the hulk about its ok for him to be angry, or the global warming message. Its ok to have that stuff in a comic i just wish it was delivered like a truck to the face.
I haven't been a Hulk fan for years. Although I did like Peter David's Gray Hulk run. Seeing Hulk as a crafty self-serving character was epic. But his return back to savage mindless monster.....not so sure.
The whole idea of the series was decent and unique in my opinion. I got up to collecting issue 5 of this series physically, but gave up after the horror became TOO ridiculous and nasty. Great review by the way!👍
I enjoyed this run, am glad I read it, but I agree, it's overrated. It flails in the middle - after a strong start. I found parts of it needlessly confusing and you're right - the art isn't that good. It's good most of the time, especially the large pieces, but in parts it looked rushed and badly detailed and bland. Faces are an issue.
Im reading the part after they beat General Fortean, and they take over the shadow base, and it's going down the "humanity is bad" thing. Idk, i haven't finished it yet, but i definitely ain't a fan.
If you self proclaim yourself to not be intelligent enough to "tackle the topics he's involved men," why bring it up and call him a bad person in the first place? You're literally admitting that you cast emotional judgements on things you admit you're too stupid to understand.
I'm confused, would it be better if I just lied and repeated what everyone else thought about the book? I wanted to give my honest opinion and 60% of the series was a bit of a drag. 40% was great, but for me, that doesn't make a great series. I don't know what people want in a review anymore
@@MaddoggComics You must submit to the hive mind, Marcus. Submit now!! lol In all seriousness, I liked this a lot more than you did but you gave me some things to think about. Great vid.
Read 20 issues so far. Loved the first 10 and was very hyped for more. Then there was "Hulk goes to Hell" which was pretentiois, pseudo-philosophical garbage. Issues 15-20 with Abomination and Betty Rose were pretty good. Definetely a bit over-hyped series but I still like it overall.
Liked the first 24 issues. The second half became a left wing manifesto. Hated Xenmu - making Nostalgia the villain. Hated the fact that the "Hulk Teens" is basically Antifa. It becomes a preachy, soap boxing, left wing manifesto. Don't read comics for a lecture. Read comics to be entertained.

Recommend another hulk run for someone other than Peter David or the writers before him And something is not as stupid as Hulk from Jeph Loeb. There is no problem with it being simple. My only problem is with the event of the fall of the Hulks and the World War hulks.
The comic is about hulk and his trans sidekick fighting against global warming. It was so boring and politically pandering i had to just end my whole marvel subscription.

A drag to read is the right way to word it. It's just too monotone and slow with flat characters. It bored me eventually.
