  • As members of the Church of Jesus Christ, we've been told the story of Joseph Smith's death for many, many years. But could there be some pieces that historians have missed? Or maybe the common story isn't as accurate as it should be told? Today on Saints Unscripted, Brian Stutzman joins us to talk about the death of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as Mormons). Joseph Smith was killed by an angry mob while he was still quite young. We know he died a martyr but who killed Joseph Smith?
Let us know what you learned from Brian in the comments below :)

Several other first hand accounts also detail how after the firing squad finished him, someone came forward with a large knife to remove his head but a pillar of light came down from heaven, frightening him off and leaving the firing squad frozen in shock to the point where others had to carry them off and flee. Wild stuff.

I am curious about the forensics. If he was shot with 69 caliber balls, and if that is what hit Hyrum and John Taylor, why isn’t there more damage to their bodies? Also, how come you don’t mention the guns that Joseph and Hyrum had in the jail?

How do you explain away the wound to Hyrum’s throat and face. It seems to be an unlikely shot to be made from someone outside of the room. History can be changed/hidden/manipulated but evidence from a crime scene is harder to manipulate. I expected this video to discuss the forensics of the crime scene.

I always find it interesting that, upon recollection of this particular series of events, there is seldom mention of Joseph also being armed with a flintlock/pepperbox pistol, and Joseph managed to seriously injure two people in the process. Why is that?
I won't deny the fact that Joseph probably knew he was a dead man, and that his attempt at fighting back is quite justified, but I find it interesting it doesn't get brought up on retellings.

Firefight was mentioned here. From what I've experienced, it seems to be common knowledge that Joseph defended himself and those with him with a gun (for those who looked into it). It's even shown in the latest movie put out by the Church. People use that argument usually to support the claim that he's not a prophet/martyr). People can split hairs on that...but I don't see why it's unreasonable that he fought back against those people trying to kill him and potentially those with him.

A big one is the bullett wounds in Hyrum and Joseph could have only been made from small caliber pistols that both Taylor and Richard’s had in their possession. If they had been shot by the muskets of the mobsters there would have been decapitation and missing limbs . And blowing off the reasons the printing press was destroyed as a matter of unimportance. Just perpetuates the big lie that we have always been told . Really sick of all the whitewashing and suppression of true church history . Might want to add in that the men who killed Joseph Smith believed in spiritual wifery, aka- free love (just like the 60s- women passed around), Chauncey Higbee was almost sentenced for attacking women, young women, he was young (barely 20, as were many of his friends, obviously AND in the Nauvoo Legion, so... military trained YOUNG MEN), BUT he was excommunicated in 1842, along with many men- who thought that Spiritual wifery, with it's no commitment and babies being poisoned (infantice, sometimes a poison, sometimes with metal tools, before... they knew about sanitation; it happened by Dr. Bennett who started Spiritual wifery), it's no wonder these men were ANGRY at Emma Smith for calling them out, she used the words Spiritual wifery, and somehow thought polygamy was the same, so did Joseph, so likely many who lived this free love- called it polygamy (thus why many records of Saints who lived plural marriage were fast to correct people that they lived Celestial Plural Marriage, NOT polygamy, they rejected that word- as did Emma... so she was NOT denouncing plural marriage, and on her death bed either, said it could be lived if people lived it right, "but they would not"- likely seeing so many drawn into the no commitment, no consequences version, repeatdly denoucning... Spiritual WIFERY- which wasn't even a marriage, which was denounced by BY and all the 12, the whole Church shouted Amen at WWPhelps speech denouncing Spiritual Wifery...).
It always bugs me a lot when people skip over the facts, when you know what words mean, it's easy to see the Willard, and Taylor in fact always denounced Spiritual wifery as well, it was a different and very evil, very much was the same as human trafficking- exponentially increasing today, whereas plural marriage was with women who gave consent, and were with one man, and eternity only sealings did not mean you were married (JS III infact was told this, on his travels to Utah, but it confused him, he assumed it was spiritual wifery- as do Baptists... it was the total opposite). Just saying it was only sealings that were happening just falls into what these "liars" say as well, that Joseph didn't live celestial plural marriage, he did, he just didn't want to get any pregnant and put their life at risk, as these men were sharply dealt with for living Spiritual wifery, it wasn't "fair" in their minds that they couldn't share-mistreat women however they wanted (Jeffrey Epstein treatment of women is how the men who killed Joseph Smith lived). WHY do they NOT ever... ever... state how Joseph publicly charged Chauncey Higbee as basically a serial (mild word- rapine), WEEKS before Joseph Smith's death and how Higbee was constantly threatening to kill him? ugh, if people knew the real story, they'd NOT lose so much faith in Joseph... I believe that... I get this skirting around dance! (see Neuronal Junction for better explanations and sources, AND a breakdown of the Murder of Hyrum and Joseph).

Joseph Smith, Emma Smith, and Hyrum Smith never separated plural marriage, polygamy, or spiritual wifery from celestial plural marriage. They publicly and privately condemned them all. The Celestial plural marriage was invented to explain why Josrph condemned it. There were no "carefully worded denials". That's a gaslighting technique the church came up with to explain the very adamant denials from Joseph.

He fired three shots from the top of the stairs and connected with three individuals, he went back inside to find his brother had been shot and killed. Joseph and Hyrum were in the way of other leaders who had different ideas about polygamy. Joseph and Hyrum faught diligently against Polygamy, even calling it adultery. So many falsehoods have been told about Joseph practicing Polygamy. Lies have been told and history has been changed. Joseph and Hyrum were very good and righteous men and they were completely against the idea of polygamy. Brigham on the other hand had a hard time keeping his pants on around women. Mike there is even more to this story they have not included. For example, Joseph had a smuggled gun with him and was drinking wine that night. He shot into the crowd and he was not wearing his temple garments. By all modern measures, he was not a faithful member of the church.
His actions were not (in my view) self defense. He could not have reasonably expected his shots into the crowd to have protected himself. It merely inflamed an already tense situation. No martyr has ever died while shooting back into a crowd and hurting people. A true martyr loves his enemies, as Jesus commanded. He doesn't hurt them but he leaves them in God's hands and begs God to forgive them, just as Jesus prayed "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do"
There is a lot they didn't mention here, sadly

Joseph did not know how many people were on the other side of that door. To return fire is always a valid act of self-defense.

I think this man is very much mischaracterizing the film who killed Joseph Smith? The premise is not that John Taylor and Willard Richards kill Joseph. Go and watch the film for yourself. Also, the people involved in that film are not non-members. Some of them are members, and others were members that were excommunicated by the church because of the judgments of men. I would dare say that they were incorrect judgments. Every single one of them would probably still be a member today if the prideful leadership did not kick them out.

    • @brianstutzman5037
      @brianstutzman5037 Рік тому +1

No, you don't need to watch the movie. The whole premise is that John Taylor and Willard Richards have guns in the jail and shot Joseph and Hyrum. Some of the people behind the film are not members of the church because they don't believe Brigham Young is the rightful successor. That's all you need to know about the film. In my opinion many are apostates.

It's an old theory. There was a reason Emma called the lds leaders "dogs" and didn't follow them west. I believe this theory is correct. It explains the historical inconsistencies of Joseph Smith's character. I believe Joseph and his brothers were murdered and slandered by their "friends" who took control of the church and changed the doctrines to their likings.

I believe JosephSmith was a true prophet and the Church is true, but I don’t think this video settles it. I agree with the folks who made the recent inside job video being addressed here that we need some forensics experts to analyze what happened in there, not a historian. @@mikkifrompreston4396 Then the Bible Only Believing Christians are praying incorrectly. Because they are praying to Christ and not to the Father in the name of Christ and are not following the same pattern the Lord himself and Paul followed to pray to his Father who is in Heaven. The Lord set the example himself of who to address in his prayers.
For Jesus taught in his teachings that its God the father who must receive the glory. What the Saints have said about Christ being their spiritual brother is correct because Christ is the morning star of David. And Lucifer is the morning star that fell from heaven because he rebelled against God the Father. The Bible teaches that There is more than one morning star The Bible also teaches that God the Father is the Father of all our spirits. That is why we teach that one third of God's children rebelled against him to follow Lucifer and were cast out of their place.
