    The Campulance is a 2002 Ford E450 Marque Commando 164 Class III ambulance powered by the Ford 7.3l Powerstroke turbo diesel engine and a 4 speed 4R100 transmission. Lefty is a 68lb American Staffordshire Terrier (best I can tell) that came from the Verona Street Animal Shelter (www.vsas.org/) in March 2014 at the age of 9 months. Hi David and Lefty. I hope no one was hurt or worse in that trailer fire. My dad was a fireman where he lived in NJ most of his life. My parents bought a place for weekend getaways and vacations in PA that only allowed trailers, he saw and helped fight so many trailer fires there, all being total losses. They did not have an on site fire dept. and had to wait for trucks to drive from Tobyhanna, Pocono, other surrounding towns….my dad started an on site fire department, they bought a fire truck, and recruited other members who were firemen or if they wanted to be a fireman, they could join and get training. It really made a difference in the trailer fires getting help quicker. Fires are scary and so loud, I had a house fire after I moved to WA, the house was built in 1903, the 2nd house in the town. When we bought it in 1992 no updates had ever been made. They said old wiring….we had started updates and that helped when the fire burned. We rebuilt it ourselves and with friends, took a year to do, my ex still lives there today.

    Surprised more RV's don't burn when you look at how they are wired. Look at your work and there is no comparison. Funny coffee story. Had a new guy come on one of our week long scuba trips. One of the guys did the grocery shopping for years. There were 4 regulars and the new guy who was an absolute great guy and fit in great. I explained to him to make himself at home on the boat. About an hour in to our 12 hour trip to the Island I heard him rummaging around down in the galley. I asked him what he was looking for and he said the coffee. The 4 of us looked at each other and whispered who is going to tell him. None of us drank coffee. Poor guy tried pop for his fix but told us later in the trip he had a headache for two days. Poor guy.

I have 2 of those cans in my upstairs bedroom for emergency due to the upstairs window being my only escape. Bottled water is totally useless compared to having water filtering equipment. For the weight of one bottle of water, you can have a water filter that will typically make a few thousand bottles of safe, potable water, from any river, lake, or tap which isn't potable water. You can't carry enough water to survive on for long, even in a vehicle.
      Dogs will eat anything. Including their owner, when the owner runs out of water and dies in a few days.
      So, the priority is keeping the person alive, like how you put on your own oxygen mask first in an airplane "so you are better able to assist others".
      People always think the sky is falling. It hasn't yet, in the USA.

      @@EfficientRVer- You might want to ask the families of the victims of Hurricane Helene, 230 and counting as of 10/4. There are orders for well over 1,000 body bags piling up - people are ordering them from Amazon because there aren’t enough in the normal supply system. The sad excuses for governments voted in the last few years are so incompetent that it took a week for military first responders to be called up, despite them champing at the bit to deploy the day the hurricane hit. Now, the feds are standing in the way of relief supplies, volunteer workers, Starlink satellite terminals, etc., from getting where they’re desperately needed because they’re “in charge” and don’t want anyone else to get credit. Meanwhile, toddlers are being found wandering in the woods looking for their parents, days after the passing of the storm, while “leaders” are lying on beaches and attending Hollyweird campaign fundraisers.

    Oh for goodness sake‘s, I sure hope that there was no one in that airstream when it caught on fire? It sounds like the Ranger that you spoke with didn’t mention this to you? We had next-door neighbors whose house caught on fire. The firefighters found that it was related to an alarm clock that was plugged in downstairs in their finished basement. It just had been wired incorrectly and it sparked and started their whole house on fire. Luckily no one was home. Ever since then I have been afraid of electrical fires and also gas fires. They just scare me to death. You’re right, you come along these accidents and it just makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck, and you pray to God that some thing like this never happens to you or your family. I am glad that you are extremely diligent about looking over all of your gas and electronic connections, to make sure that they are all installed properly, to avoid any kind of a fire or an explosion. 🙏

    The problem is when people use crappy outlet strips for something drawing high power. You can get away with a lot if you're only charging your phone and some USB lighting. Not so much, if you run an air fryer off that same outlet strip.
    In an RV, van, or car, just spring for a UL certified strip, or preferably hospital-grade.

  • @doofhund3526
    @doofhund3526 День тому

    I worked in hospitals and power strips(power taps) were forbidden for just the reason you mention. If you need more outlets, install more outlets. Nice flying camera work.

    • @EfficientRVer
      @EfficientRVer День тому

      Interestingly, at a US military surplus auction about 20 years ago, I bought many dozens of brand new power strips approved for hospital use, meeting the military specs for that. Uncle Sam paid approximately $500 each for them. The strip is a metal box maybe 3.5 x 3.5 x 18 inches. It is basically a big electrical box without all the knockouts, and with a nice brown paint job. Each outlet in the strip has its own switch with pilot light. Each was internally wired like commercial outlets in a wall, with 12awg copper wire good for 20A, but the whole thing was rated 15A to correspond to the specs for a standard plug and standard outlet. You could tell it was all as beefy as a 20A plug and outlet, but a spec is a spec, and if one of the blades isn't sideways, that means its spec is not 20A.
      Currently I use one for all of my phone chargers, camera battery chargers, extra USB outlets, and so forth. Most of its outlets contain a GE 3-outlet tap. So, I do have a good dozen or more things plugged into it, about half of them drawing 5W to 20W each. I will admit that with USB-C PD chargers getting more powerful, at some point I'll need to count up the wattage, but for now there are just a handful of 20W or 30W PD outlets, a 65W, and a 100W. Still far from the 1800W to trip the strip's own breaker
      It's just not practical to have one duplex circuit per outlet in a house, with dozens of low-power devices in each room. As long as you use quality equipment like a Belkin or better power strip, and GE or better splitter taps (around $3 each in quantity, not cheap 2 for $1 stuff) and absolutely make sure that every circuit is properly fused, and every outlet strip has its own breaker, I have no qualms about number of things plugged into a circuit. You do need to count up the wattages if you want to avoid tripping breakers. I never trip breakers in these situations, because I am very careful about where I plug in large loads. I treat breakers as backup protection, and awareness as primary protection. If I'm plugging in a toaster oven, it's going to be the only thing plugged into any of the kitchen outlets, unless I know different outlets are on different circuits. If I run a hair dryer on high, it's going into the bathroom GCFI outlet only. If multiple bathrooms are on the same circuit, I make sure I know that, and if it's my house, I change that.

    The rubber hoses are failing at the barbed hose end connector. I had two of them blow this summer. One when I was sitting there drinking coffee. Best to put copper lines in in any cabin area with a vent hose to the outside around it. On aircraft fuel lines that have to transit the cabin areas are a hose in a hose setup. So in an RV the center hose would be the propane and the outer hose would be vented outside.

    When I first started replacing the wiring on my sailboat taught me to buy the really good tools, and how to pit in the proper gage wire. It's critical fir tge sailboat wiring to be proper because I'm sitting in salt water and electrolysis is very dangerous. It's also illegal in the marinas. SO the same principles apply to my RV rig. There are over 200,000 vehicle fires each year in the U.S. alone, most of which start at speed. If you divide up the number of miles of highways (several million miles) by that number over a 10-year period (two million vehicle fires), it makes you wonder how there isn’t a scorch mark visible on every road at least every 10 miles, on average.

    Glad you'll switch to low pressure in the propane hose. I don't know if the braided hoses are better than the rubber ones. Probably like washing machine hoses, some of each type are marginal, and others of the same type are industrial strength. My own washer hoses have braided stainless sheaths. At a minimum, it makes it a lot harder for any mice thinking of chewing through them. So my own preference would be braided stainless over a high quality hose, though it does hide what the hose itself looks like, so many brands must get tempted to skimp.

I use tge braided propane hose onALK my propane becaysr my professional propane installer (Ferrell Propane Company) told me that's all they install and when they came to my ranch to install all my propane appliances including my stove/ove n, Instant hit water heater and house furnace, they put the beaided lines-connections on every appliance. They made all the copper lines and connections from my tank to the house and I never had a problem. It was $2k to do the professional install, but that was for new construction on an entire house. But if I were you, I'd replace all those rubber hoses with the safer braided hose. They cone in lots of different lengths so make sure you get a braided hose that fits well and isn't too long or comes up short. The pros make you SAFE, so do as they do. ❤

    The propane discussion was interesting; I use a XINREX propane fume detector and probably would not have become so reliant on propane without this safety feature. The chance of fire is super scary. I have 1000 amp hours of Battleborn batteries if they ever catch fire the party is over. Fire safety has become embedded in my lifestyle, but the fear is real.

    I never leave any appliances plugged in when I'm done using tgem. I have a kill switch that turns off everything when my rig is unattended. I'm so terrified of such a fire and possible losing one or all of my pets, it just isn't worth it. If it's too hot then I take them with me to run into town. Even my solar, I don't leave that going. Those lithium batteries CANNO be extinguished with regular fire extinguishers. They make a special blanket that the Phoenix fire department has been testing because there have been several Li battery fires in electric trucks that they had to just let burn out and hosecthr area to keep it from spreading. All these big fires have made the news as a warning. Stay safe.

    Walmart sells McCafe in 1 & 3 pound cans, which are a bargain.
    "Lithium" batteries come in many types, the same way that wood might be oak--or balsa. There is only 1 lithium battery chemistry, called LiFePO4, which is really safe. All of the others are more powerful, but the chemicals in them actually produce oxygen when they burn, making a real firestorm that can't easily be put out.
    But LiFePO4 batteries don't do that! So conventional means can be used to extinguish them. I prefer cooking on gas, but not at the cost of carrying explosives. When there's no sunlight, if you have dual alternators that's no problem.
    IIRC when you installed the new batteries, you used the safer ones and you installed primary fuses right up close to them. Many DIYers don't understand how important those expensive fuses are. Or, that your standard RV fire extinguisher is capable of putting out a desk trash can--and that's all.
    Ask around some fire stations. Let them show you how much more ( 4x ?) you need before it can do anything.

    What a coincidence talking about propane. I made an appointment with an RV repair shop to look over my propane systems. The previous owner said they only used the cooktop but it Hannah has a hot water heater and also a room heater that runs off of propane. I’m hoping everything ignites and works as design hourly repair rates are pretty expensive. After they do their thing then I’m gonna take it over to one of the fire stations that has a hazmat unit and have them sniff for propane not actually the fireman you know tells if there’s propane leaks. The rig is 36 years old, and in mint condition. I could do it myself have installed natural gas water heaters before but due to the age I think your professional is best.

    You lost me on the long run wire "decrease the gauge and increase the fatness" thought the fatness of a wire is gauge? Still waiting for that whole understanding of it all to click in my brain. I remember watching your upgrading power video when you said that. Thanks for the content. 🙂

    • @jimmanley7153

      The wire diameter (“fatness”) increases as the gauge number decreases in value. Electrical terminology, like all technical and other jargon, is purposely designed to be confusing to maintain a barrier-to-entry for certification and limit competition for union jobs. “Knowledge” exams based solely on terminology are substituted for actual comprehension and understanding, and the problem with too little “knowledge” is that it’s dangerous.
      In the Navy, we used to only teach junior boiler technicians (“snipes”) to keep the water level in a glass sight gauge within high and low marks on the glass, by adjusting input and output valves. They didn’t know HOW and WHY their adjustments affected the operation of the boilers, so when something unusual happened, they didn’t know what the correct procedures were, resulting in upwards of millions of dollars in equipment damage and severe injuries, if not loss of life.

      It is hilarious that people think a DC-DC charger is something new, just because companies selling overprice power stations have now started pushing them. I'm a fan of DC-DC chargers while driving. Or even for drawing your vehicle battery partway down with, to run the engine less than idling to run a DC-DC. Draw it down a bit, charge it back up quickly at higher power than the DC-DC, maybe while running that also, if you have enough alternator power. Repeat. If you draw the vehicle battery down too much, you weren't paying attention, but a jump start pack fixes that.

Or should I use copper pipe all the way to the back??

    Two comments about electrical :
    90% of electrical problems are poor connections !
    DC wire sizing tables are usually calculated with length of run being there and back i.e. if your Max air fan is ten feet away from the power source then that is a 20’ run on the wire sizing / amp tables . The fine print around the tables needs to be read . Oh yes, I just cant help it . VISE GRIPS ARE NOT CRIMPERS !!

    powerstrips aren't rated for a lot of plug/unplug cycles, have to be replaced often. Most wire people use in their rv is rated for 60c. I wouldn't touch that. In a house you have to use 75c that is being changed to 90c. Personally would just use marine wire at 105c. But due to these wires not being in an 75f controlled environment, you really need 90c or higher rated wires. There are not many wire guage calculators that will do ambiant temp + wire temp rating + amp load + wire length all into consideration. (Example, general rule is 14awg wire handles 15amps for around 50ft, but at 100f outdoor temp, that wire using 60c lost 20% of it's rating, where 75c wire lost 12%, and 90c lost 10%, and at 105f that goes more insane, to 30% at 60c, 20% at 75c, and 12% at 90c)

    • @TheCampulanceMan
      @TheCampulanceMan  15 годин тому

      That's a good point - the temps that are realized in a vehicle sitting in the sun are far beyond household temps.
