    I wonder how they did the analysis of the 70`s sound, since BHM original rangemaster was left behind at a gig. Did he replace it with another one, or with the Cornish one? Just wondering. No reason why a DIY one can`t sound the same, difficulty is getting the correct parts though (correct transistors here is such a simple circuit are everything for the tone), and magic is in the biasing and cap choices. Where analysis of BHM actual units it important. I like how the different eras have different specific setting on the potentiometer. Thanks for sharing!!!

    • @jonathanplanner3270
      @jonathanplanner3270  2 роки тому

      There’s a long debate as to the full history of Brian’s TBs
      Yes the original was lost by a careless roadie, then Harold built a replacement and there’s also some talk that John Deacon built one prior to Cornish who I gather has spoken of finding the John Deacon version while working for Brian
      The Cornish one was introduced in 75 however Brian definitely still has an original Rangemaster because it was used for this pedal and it’s boost range measured by KAT ( Nigel Knight) it’s obviously not the same one that was lost but can’t be too far off of guess in terms of boost range

      @@jonathanplanner3270 what a great summary. Didn’t know the history. What I like about this pedal is that the idea is to capture the different tones as BHM’s sound developed over the years. Everyone talks about chasing specific tones. But they don’t really exist outside the studio. Even BHM might dial it in slightly differently each day depending how he feels. As we all do. How is the mayday pedal?? Maybe you already did a review going to look now.

      @@peterstune1 The mayday is very good, there’s a review in my videos, there’s also a quick review of the new KAT N-Channel which is basically the same thing, but with real valves so a better end result
      Nigel hopes to have these out soon but there’s a delay while we have a valve shortage sadly … but worth waiting for!

    Thanks for the review dude. I can’t help but think it’s a lot of money for what it is ! Iv just built a rangemaster with selectable transistors, bias and tone and it cost me £50. Iv posted a video of the build process. Iv also built a deluxe for about £40. Your clearly a Brian May affection ado, have a go at a build.

      Ac30 Helix Well it’s three boosters in one and given the single version of the Cornish TB83 is the same price I’d say it wasn’t a bad price
      This has been built after taking apart Brian’s old ones to accurately measure them for responses so it’s about as accurate as you can get.
      I would like to have a go at building one so I’ll check out your video cheers

      @@jonathanplanner3270 The 70 doesn't sound like a rangemaster germanium transistor for me (it lack the fuzzy sound of it (I have an orignal rangemaster with oc44). I also have a TB83 from Cornish, and sound fatter than a Fryer which I have also but not less gainer. For me, this pedal just share the same transistor with different input cap on the swith, as describe by Greg Fryer. You could go way less expensive with DIY kit. As I also did myself. 300€ is very expensive for just a this simple device. On musikding, the kit cost, 15€...

    Do you recommend this treble booster for Brian May tones? Is it really that good?

    • @jonathanplanner3270
      @jonathanplanner3270  7 місяців тому +2

      Yes it’s very good, don’t expect a huge difference between the settings, his core tone didn’t change that much, but each one has slightly heavier gain so it does match his sound over the years when paired with an AC30 and Red Special
      A good quality TB from Fryer/Cornish or KAT without the 3 settings Will do just as good a job but you don’t get the same flexibility of the 3 settings

      Im interested how this pedal compares to nowdays Fryer Treble boosters.

    • @jonathanplanner3270
      @jonathanplanner3270  5 місяців тому

      Well it’s identical to the touring because it has that setting, and a very accurate version on the TB83 and Rangemaster, all boosters are frankly only slightly different from each other but with three settings this is one of the most flexible so it will certainly get you the Fryer Touring booster sound that Brian used if that’s what you seek

    Can you get a good clean tone without using two ac30s? i have ordered my treble booster and im using a bmg special and a fender mustang amp, do i still get the same crystal clean tone as you or is that because you're using an ac30?

    • @jonathanplanner3270
      @jonathanplanner3270  3 роки тому

      When you roll back the volume you should get a clean tone but I suspect it will be fairly different to the AC30, there’s only a small amount of room on the volume before it goes into distortion hence why Brian has the Superpot fitted now, I’m sure it will work on yours but the fender amp will give a different tone

      Black White What are you playing through?
      There’s a big difference between the 70s and 80s sound less so between the 80s and 90s
      But I’d say you should be able to hear a pretty big thickening to the sound between the first two
      Keep in mind no booster drastically changes the sound however
      Is it going straight into he amp and first in line after the guitar? Or do you have other processing somewhere?

      If you look at the recordings first two albums are the 70s tone with a Rangemaster
      The 80s really covers every other Queen album and the 90s is Paul Rodgers era
