  • We are asked all the time; ‘which 4wd is the best?’ So this week we take four hugely different 4x4s and run them down the same tracks to show how they perform.
Representing the dual cab utility market is a 2012 Colorado. From the recreational side of things we have a rock solid 1992 GQ Patrol. The 2018 Iveco Daily 4x4 is included as a full size super tourer. And the THE40 (1978) is the wild end of modified old school 4x4s.
We are back in the Cobaw State Forest where rocks, ruts and hills combine for plenty of challenge, variety and fun! Check it out as we put all four of these popular vehicles through their paces.

Since when do you choke a tree trunk protector?

Hi Mate, thank you for the question. We were wondering if anyone would notice. It’s a technique we have been using and teaching for decades now and it’s often used in competition settings around the world. It’s ideal for quick low load winching situations and it is just a variation of how to use a tree trunk protector correctly. There are a number of benefits including how it spreads the load but the key things are that it gives you more strap to play with and facilitates the connecting process with a range of benefits. These days many winch hooks are not big enough to safely take two eyelets and many also have a locking mechanism or spring loaded latch which can make it close to impossible to fit two eyelets into the hook correctly. Using one eyelet gives you a more true and safer contact between the eyelet and the hook. We have even seen hook points tear through eyelets because they just wouldn’t fit in. In some schools of thought it is believed that the strap should act like a bridle, spreading the load across two points. This is good for vehicles but not important for trees. Firstly, the tree if suitable represents one locating point and secondly with a typical tree trunk protector being rated around 10T, using one eyelet is more than sufficient. It is of course always better to err on the side of safety but if you think you are at risk with a 10T strap then the winch cable, winch bolts, bar mounting, hook and other parts of the recovery chain would be at risk anyway. And finally, there is no choking affect on the tree, the load is distributed over a wider area as there is more contact with the tree and the inherent width of the strap means that the tree is fully protected. Damage occurs only when people use the wrong strap or no strap at all. We are of course open to all opinions and would love to hear your thoughts.

4WD TV thanks for your reply. I actually think these days with the introduction of soft shackles and modern hooks like the factor 55 varieties it’s much easier to secure the two loops of the tree trunk protector. But if you believe it’s safe to do so I’m not gonna argue that. Cheers

@@bradrein08 All good mate, actually the Factor 55s are one of the tightest hooks we have ever worked with. Stunningly crafted and perfect for a soft shackle but not so good with your typical tree trunk protector. Things are moving in the right direction though and you are right on the money. Soft shackles, kinetic recovery ropes and totally enclosed winching strategies are definitely making things a lot safer (and lighter). There is going to be a split in the industry though with these lightweight items. We are already seeing kinetic ropes for sale on one site for not much over $100, then on another site for $1500! A big split in technology and performance (and price).

4WD TV was referring more to the closed loop system in regards to the factor 55 style hooks. Spot on with the cheap and expensive gear, i have a theory with recovery gear, winches etc, its the one place i wont skimp on. You put your hard earned money into your pride and joy to have it hang off cheap gear.

Do you guys have to present it in such a way to sell it the television companies?

Hey Phil, lovely to hear from you again. We would love to sell our show but sadly it doesn't work that way.

4WD TV I just saying your guys first video on this channel was 11years ago, you’ve only 17.3k subscribers and on this video which is 24hrs (at the time of writing this) you’ve only 1.1k views & 25 ‘likes’.
Surly you’ve gotta look at those figures and ask yourself what are we doing wrong?

@@Phil_McAvity Hi Phil, thank you for the feedback. We love it! UA-cam is just another side platform for us. As you mentioned the views are dismal. It's not an area we have put any effort into for many years as we have been heavily focussed in other areas that have provided great success for us. Hence why we are still here after 16 years of making 4wd TV and loving what we do with the industry. It's such a great area to work in. Thanks again mate for the feedback. Keep it coming.

4WD TV and feedback is all it is. You guys used to be the show to watch 6+ years ago. I remember going out 4WDING & guys would have your stickers on the their vehicles, haven’t seen this in years. But now UA-cam has grown and so has its content creators. Ronny Dahl, Andrew S White and Sam Eyles to name but a few are killing it and in the process leaving old shows like you, All4Adventure, OffRoadAdventureShow & Pat Callinan way behind in my opinion. Yes I don’t see what goes on behind the scenes with the money being made & lost but I’m not the only one with this opinion. I appreciate its (4WD TV) your baby & you want to protect it but a successful businesses listens to their customers.
