- Join me for an explore of the Garforth to Castleford Railway, in this series we explore the abandoned railway. Looking for any relics and features still remaining today including some before and after comparisons of certain scenes.
In this video we venture on the second section from Kippax, taking a look at Allerton Bywater Colliery, Bowers Halt, Bowers Branch Line, Lowther Colliery, and the remains all the way down to Ledston Station.

Briliant video again Darren. Those concrete bases you found are for point rodding, if you look at your old photo at 4:53 you can see them on the right hand side, running parallel to the track, and supporting the metal rods.

This is absolutely fascinating to me. I’m not originally from here, having grown up in rural Herefordshire, but came to Yorkshire as a student and have eventually settled in Kippax with my Yorkshire wife and Yorkshire kids! I regularly cycle down these lines and have never seen what they looked like previously - I’ll now be able to view my bike ride with greater appreciation of the history. You've done a wonderful job with this. I grew up in the 50's/60's smack bang in the middle of everything shown in this video (at Woodend), and your excellent photo-fades bring back some lovely memories. The miners' excursions from Bowers Halt to Scarborough were the highlight of our year back then.

Another cracking video, top rank. The iron work that is still in place is point rodding ,the angle crank is for turning the rodding around curves. The concrete blocks in the ground form a base for supports for the point rodding to move on. Small wheels were attached to the supports and the underside of the rodding rolled on the wheels. Hope that answerd your question. Have you thought about exploring the Cross Gates to Wetherby line???

I grew up playing on those lines in allerton in the 70s when the trains still ran on it, we used to stand on the bridge overlooking the pit yard and watch the blue shunters...Great times, thanks 👍
I remember it like it was yesterday.
I did a bit of work in the pits main offices.
And Remember seeing the 2 shunters down at Bowers row.
Luckily those 2 are now preserved.

I am a follower of a lot of these similar channels but the award for the most amazing transitions of new/old/new has to go to you Darren. Love hearing about the history but when you do the comparisons, it signifies just how much is lost. I dislike the phrase "forgotten line", as people like you who do what you do, ensure that these relics are never considered "forgotten". Thank you.

Love this one mate, must of been roughly 91/92 I stayed with a school friend his parents had a pub in allerton. I’m from Castleford. One Saturday we decided to venture into a huge empty factory at the other side of the road. It was actually the abandoned colliery. We walked looking through key safes on the wall etc. very old memory and yes we were little buggers but I do remember the smell and it were pretty exciting at the time.

Brilliant, right enjoyed this video, born and bred in Allerton Bywater 1959, when we were young lads we use to play about on the old station wooden platform then in our early teens would knock about there too. We use to spend many a hour in that tunnel down near Park lane when we skived school. Then went to Allerton pit to work in 1975-1991. Happy days :-)

Great watch. I grew up at back of Bowers Junction, born in 82. Can remember playing on the tracks, putting coins for the locomotives to flatten. The drivers used to reverse up towards kippax from St Aidens with some carriages of coal, return to St Aidens for more and then come back to hook all up what hadn’t been stolen. Occasionally, people from the estate would hide in the banking waiting for the driver to check the coupling up of each carriage but they’d alway be one or two left behind. The bit where the bridge has gone, near the raised path due to the water, we used to push hay bails off the brick part of the bridge ( the middle had gone and was left open like the side that remains) and then jump into it. When they modernised Bowers Junction I think they removed the section too. Great days them, thanks for the memories!
There’s also another tunnel near Doctors Drive or Lane as its now known towards Bowers Junction.
I didnt spot that one. I'll have to look for it now.
Might be covered other now like. Talking 25 years ago when we used to go through. Wasn’t very big iirc.

Really enjoying these videos,I'm from brigshaw lane originally,I used to love Field walking to find evidence of this past history and I've also had many good finds along the old lines way,I'm unfortunately old enough to remember the old bridge at allerton bywater before it was demolished,bowers line ran just behind my sister's house which is shown on the video.

The answer to your up side down concrete things . We’ll there the right way up and these are where the point rodding goes . They go from the signal box to the various points . They went on top of the oval thing on the clip at 6:41 . Hope this helps cheers Glen

You need to do a master class on how you get those old photos lines up so perfectly with modern shots. Very interesting and always good to find actual relics on the way.

As others have already commented on the point artifacts I won't, but interestingly the W or WB&SC being Westinghouse is still used today in the name "Westcad", which is the computer based signalling control system used over large (and getting larger) areas of the GB rail network (which I use every day at work!)

Thanks for the thumbs up Darren, I meant to say in the last msg Ive got a star letter in the Railway magazine this month commenting on Bradfords main line debacle and the hs2 u turn. I mentioned the habit round here of discarding the old lines in part' our Spen Greenway esp tow Bradford and low Moor, I also mentioned the "much fabled" Leeds new line (I did put a mention in of your channel but that's been edited) so I'd like to say "thank you" as without the wonderfully informative Leeds new line series you did, the letter wouldn't have been possible as such. Give your sen a pat on the back, as I still watch the series as Im amazed what you found and showed almost right under my nose. Take it steady, and be careful. Ben 🚍🚌

I just wish I'd the channel named in the mag! I'm a bit of a letter writer, used to write to local paper alot, usually tends to be my other passion, cars, and autocar mag. Re the Leeds new line, I'm still staggered as to where it went. With the help of a train buff on UA-cam I "travelled" the line on a simulator. You can only imagine how much co2 etc etc we could have saved by having or reinstating the lines. It might sound daft being a bus driver as it appears I'm urging fir my nose to be cut off so to speak but the trains can't go everywhere. Anyway keep up the good work. Best wishes. Ben 🚌🚍

I only wish id found history a bit earlier ie at school! My daughter into books n medieval stuff, but I would have liked to pick which piece of history to do for gcse mysen. I know that's a simplistic way of looking at it, but if history had been bout ww2, etc that'd have been great. I suppose it's 20th century stuff I like. The train stuff came after I took p*ss out of a colleague, I then ended up been mad on anything produced by Sir Nigel Gresley! Another great interest is JFK, after watching the film in 1991 or so, I'm a fountain of knowledge on that. Mark Felton on UA-cam is spellbinding on ww2 stuff youve never heard of, his knowledge of German stuff is amazing.. Ben 🚍🚌

those artifacts @ around 6 mins are a bell crank to change the direction of push/pull, and supports for the point rods, which connect the points to the signal box.

The little brick tunnel is Allerton's Ticklecock Bridge
When you get to Barnsdale Road, you can go down Newton Lane and access the remainder of the land instead if cycling all the way round. I took the kids last year during lockdown but nothing much remains.
Me and a friend went for a really good jaunt back in 2007 and took some photos of when the line was still under Barnsdale Road. Will see if I can dig them out.

Lots of family history gone there, most of my family wirked at Ollerton pot as it was known. The Turners depot was once central works for the Yorkshire coslfield. My dad was tje last in the family to work in the industry, and had the sad job of handing the keys of Stillingfleet collery to. a security guard. So many memories, not all of them good.

Used to go to Scarborough etc from Kippax usually down to Castleford, in the 50's/60's on the steam trains (if we were lucky) on trips from the Central Club. Even that's shut now.
The steam train trips from Castleford a few years back really brought back memories.

Used to live across from bowers halt station when my parents moved there in 1983 there was still the concrete pillars from where the station used to be. My dad helped create the bridleway from there to st aidens sometime in the late 90s

Informative video as usual. Allerton Main (Bowers Junction) the stone base was for a water crane (railway term) as seen in your now/then/now shot. The point thingy in the four foot is a point rodding 'crank'. The bracket thing was not for cables to go through, it is a bracket, should be another alongside, between which would have been a pulley wheel that signal rodding ran on.

This is my country. Lived on Brigshaw Drive; used to sit on the banking watching the steam trains go by; occasional fires put out by fire brigade. Lived also at Woodend; watched many trains hold up traffic going over Leeds Road nr Palmer's chippie. Lived on Park Avenue, backing on to railway and pit; used it as short cut on way home from school. Used that tunnel under lines to plantation many times with bikes and sandwiches for picnic days out. You missed rail link to coal staithes on canal down Robinson Street; bridge across Station Road. Happy days playing in Tom Puddings.

If you ever get the chance you should visit hickson and welch in castleford. Its a pretty cool area. I don't know if the land is private property but it used to be a chemical plant. It had its own fire station down there and I believe still has an old firetruck. Not been in a few years but was a fun visit.
Oh and it also had like 3 or 4 different explosions that happened there and closed down on 2005. They're planning on building 1000 houses there but probably won't get done.
Is that the one on the island, that's really hard to get onto?
@@AdventureMe Yeah, it's quite hard, I think the bridge there is behind ESG trading. I just don't know whether that whole area belongs to that company or if it's public as there is a pretty easy to access footpath on wheldon road which bassically takes you straight to both of the bridges. One of them takes you fully over the river aire which would be the first one you see off the footpath and then the other which is further down takes you into the main Hickson and Welch site.
Is that the iron bridge? The one that you can follow up to fairburn ? My grandfather and grandmother worked at Hickson and Welsh chemical plant, grandad was also a miner,both granddad's and dad was .
@paulas1542 Possibly? I don't know the names of the bridges sorry, I just remember there being two bridges, one with rail tracks and then the other to get on the island. That's really interesting though. Did they work at hicksons for long?

Fantastic. Do you not fancy doing the Aberford to Garforth end of this route? Tgeres still a few bridges, wooden sleepers and of course the remnants of the old mine including buildings just at the end of the Garforth industrial estate.
Yes I do. But it takes time to do these, so hopefully soon if I can get round to it. I have already researched it, just have a few more projects in front first. Keep your eyes peeled.

The items found at B/Green junction are related to the point changing mechanisms ie moving the points then locking them in the new position before setting the associated signals etc. The steel operating rods can be seen to the right in the pic for other points.

Intriguing stuff - i really need to walk the 'Lines' route. I wonder why it was called Ledston station when its so far from Ledston village itself?
I think it was down to the name, they already had an Allerton station.
W.B. & S. Co stands for Westinghouse Brake & Signal Company someone has probably already mentioned it to you sir! But the things in-between the tracks is all part of Point Rodding which would have gone to the Nearest Signal Box so would have been made by Westinghouse Brake & Signal Company

you cant get into any of the buildings the winding towers are still standing & empty the rest of the buildings are offices & workshops along with a cafe

@@mandysmith5704 yes the cutting is still there all the way along even the tunnel beneath the roundabout is still in place just unfortunately its bricked up

5:10 this end connected to rodding bar semephores ran on cables points used bars & during wintertime this points arm is easily spotted as it was left behind when tracks lifted
11:35 this still has its platform its had the bed levelled off to platorm level & on the other side of the bridge the bed there still has a sectionof line down right up to the viaduct
