Fun fact about that open map. It's still used till this day as the Character Select screen. People assume it was the earlier design for Konschtat Highlands.
Thanks for making this video. FFXI was my life from 2002-2006 and it's great to see some of the early content they were working on. I'm glad this game still means enough to people that there's an audience for these types of videos.
The name Vandole on that map always stood out to me because it's an FF Adventure / seiken densetsu reference. I guess that's the origin of how they came up with Vana'Diel
I love seeing the development of the art and early renders to final, released product. FFXI really is a living piece of art that you can play every day.
@@CallMekwech so that this cut sel phiner idea might be reused to make limsa, not to mention that FFXIV for once were meant to be FFXI-2 Instead of its own series, that also might be why this was cutted, they might want to place this area in the FFXI-2 game and already felt the constrains of PS2 engine
@@traviskraftphotography possibly they plan to put sel phiner in FFXI-2 wich then renamed to limsa after they changed the plan into making this as a whole new mainline game
Very cool to see this stuff. So my guess, it's only a speculation though. I think SE the developers intended chocobo riding early into it's development phases. However, after testing they determined that having access to a personal chocobo mount allowed players to traverse the game quicker than intended which left the game feeling smaller than they were imagining. The Chocobo Wood perhaps was the area where you would do some sort of quest to capture your own chocobo similar to how it was seen in previous Final Fantasy games. As a result of the change in direction, the chocobo quest would have been downsized to a quest within Jeuno for the chocobo license. To me this makes sense as later on we did get chocobo raising and eventually a chocobo whistle. It's just sad to see this scrapped content was never tied into those features.
So why did we get Abyssea crap and the lazy "color set to 0" Escha, when there were more ideas? What about the open cave in Kazham that can lead to the wall in Yuhtunga? what about the hole in the mountain in Batallia? So many places where new areas and idea can be used but they chose to recycle...
My understanding from the 20th anniversary website and my own history with the game. In the 75/PS2 era they had very limited amount of data they could use. A whole new zone with new assets would probably have destroyed their limit. It was, after all, the reason we didn't get more RDM spells for a very long time. Then in the 99/PC era while they had unlimited space, they had a new problem. Which is that FFXI is built on a PS2 development engine that is no longer supported and every new city or location they add risks collapsing the whole game. Maybe if we ever get a remake in a new engine it can happen.
@@CallMekwech Oh, yes, tons of content, hidden away in the files half completed quests and locations abandoned due to time constraints. A few even had half-finished dialogue definitely understandable that a game like this would also have those same remnants left inside
by chance im just wondering is there any cut content of adoulin as well like dynamis hades area they show little bit in one of there interview but it was cut cause tech reasons but im wonder is tht part they show in interview still in the game clint?
does anyone have more info on this project i cant seem to find anything at all online about this and im really interested to see more or understand if it will go anywhere
Honestly there hasn’t been a better MMORPG since FFxi, wow and FFxiv are just not fun. Also the judges were so much better at handling conflict in the game and its online community.

Woah this was so cool! Awesome video dude. Nice to know they have more content made they could eventually use for something!
The large map looks like the area around the opening movie town.
6:30 that railroad with hills and everything seriously reminds me of Garlemald. It looks like if the zone was thawed out.

Interesting that they never recycled this scrapped content for one of their expansions the zone assets seemed almost ready for retail what a waste.
You already know XI will ALWAYS get all my love!
Bro can they please just remake this game or atleast with the next ff mmo go back to what made ffxi so good.
Chocobo Woods could have been a play on Chocobo Forest from FFIX. Possibly scrapped when they added chocobo digging to the main zones.
Sel Phiner looks like the outskirts of Limsa Lominsa. its the same type of architecture.
That's an interesting observation and I see it now, the sort of plaster colored walls and wood based infrastructure

Sel phiner reminds me of that one city in ffxiv. I can't remember the name but it definitely feels similar
Looks like the cities around the Limsa Lominsa area. Definitely probably inspired that whole region of FFXIV
I came here to comment same thing!!
i was thinking the same thing
It looks a lot like that small town in one of the FFXIV Gridania zones with that wood barricade. It's the town you enter PotD

I would love to see cut Contant, like this restored much in the same way that cut content in oblivion is being re-introduced into skyblivion
Didn't know that's a thing!

I'm already wondering what NM would of popped there. Fucking memories galore flooding back.
Camping Hoo Mjuu the Torrent. 😅
oof what a stingy punk
2.5m a sale I think when I was camping that lol
There's gonna be a lot of FFXI content leading up to Dawntrail and I'm all for it
just some wild chocobo nesting area maybe
Chocobo wood looks a bit like Sanctuary of Zitah
Chocobo Wood was probably early Jugner Forest
by chance im just wondering is there any cut content of adoulin as well like dynamis hades area they show little bit in one of there interview but it was cut cause tech reasons but im wonder is tht part they show in interview still in the game clint?
I am unaware, but will def keep an eye out for it now that you've asked
Looks like chocobo woods could have been their inspiration for Reisenjima. Upside down train ? No thanks.
does anyone have more info on this project i cant seem to find anything at all online about this and im really interested to see more or understand if it will go anywhere
socials for the devs are in the first video in the series
Horizon XI should do something with this.
The blond was shocking from the last video but it looks so hot on you!
The Forest kind of reminds me of Rain Catcher Gully in XIV
Curious what else is in those dats......

Some of the translations aren't totally right...Selpina DOES become Selbina on that map, the ビ was misread as a ピ as are many others...
Thanks for this! It was unclear in the article if this was hand translated or google translated
Given the map they're translating is hand written a human or a machine could make the mistake, depending on how clear the writing is.@@CallMekwech
I love watching this series. Hopefully Horizon folks can put these areas in eventually.
I want a train so bad in the game lol. Great vid.
ty!
A lot of it looks ps1 graphics which makes sense that it didn't make it.
the other point of view could be that they didn't develop those graphics further
