Robinson commented that once a fighter has trained to a certain level, their techniques and responses become almost reflexive. "You don't think. It's all instinct. If you stop to think, you're gone."
Bruce Lee within the sphere of Martial arts was always banging on about this very point as well.

    Cont: Part 2:
Dempsey, Louis, Langford and Roberto Duran could box and punch, but they could not outbox boxers with speed and agility. Ali could outbox punchers but he could not out punch punchers. Ali was also one dimensional in that he was strictly a head hunter and not a complete fighter. In terms of all around ability, hitting power and versatility, Robinson deserves the top spot.

Without a doubt the most complete fighter of all time. He could out box you like Ray Leonard or Ali,but could do it better. He could play defense, counter punch with precision shots like Mayweather or Whitiker, could transform himself into a killer like Frazier, Duran or Chavez, and had devistating knock out power with both hands. Every other fighter I know of in history had a weakness in some area of their game, but not this guy. He is the quintessential "perfect fighter" and the only one ever.

The sad thing about all of this is that we will never see Sugar Ray Robinson in his true prime to see how fast, and how hard hit on film.
All of his boxing matches when he was in his "prime" was mysteriously "Lost" when recorded. So no one can see him in his prime today. We can only read newspaper reels, or books or listen to all the old fighters that tells us about him.

Ray Robinson is to Boxing as:
    Charlie Parker is to Jazz
Bruce Lee is to Kung Fu
He is that important to the sport of boxing and boxing history.
I just hope one a film gets made one day, and made properly like "Raging Bull", then we can all see how important and how good he was. And how hard his era within boxing was compared to todays era! Its far too easy to become World Champion these days!

When Bruce Lee came into the sports and arts of matial arts in the 1960's he changed the concept of that discipline. He mastered as many styles as possible within King Fu, and others and then put them all together so as to create one new style. A style so unique that we are now only just today begining to understand it all. Use this same thing when thinking of Sugar Ray Robinson in Professional Boxing.

Gene Fulmer (26 years Old, World Champion & Undisputed champion) v Sugar Ray Ronbinson, 37 years old).

In the last two rounds, Joe Frazier couldn't hold his hands up while Ali was tired but still able to land good punches.

He fought Joey Maxim for the World Light heavyweight championship. Was giving away nearly 20lbs to Joey Maxim as well. He only lost because of heat exhausion. Even the Referee fainted they had to get another Referee. Having that extra weight helped Joey Maxim survive the heat and the pace of the fight. Otherwise he was behind on all cards, and Ray Robinson was in full control.

From then on he was so ashamed that he lost that fight to Jake la Matto in 1943, he never lost until 1951. In fact within his autobiography he felt the same sense of "loss" as when his hero "Joe Louis" lost to Max Schemling all those years ago.
There's a rumour within Boxing on how his reflex's became so quick. It was due to his trainer/s who used to catch or bottle a normal House fly's. They would then release them & ask Ray Robinson to hit it when they was released. He always did.

The fight would become known as The St. Valentine's Day Massacre(`1951) and was made a huge focal point in the 8 x times nominated film called "Raging Bull" (That starred Robert De Niro and Joe Peshi). Ray Robinson had already beaten him 4 times out of 5, and yet Jake La Matta was World Middleweight Champion.

I was thinking the exact same thing, he would be perfect, Terrance has already played a young Cassus Clay in a tv movie so playing Ray Robinson shouldn't be too much of a departure.

To prove how good he was. At the age of 38 years old he fought the World Middle weight title against Gene Fullmer (Aged 27 years old - who was The World Middleweight title holder at the time. Fight happened at 1957.
He knocked out Gene Fuller with what is still to this day considered one of the best left Hooks ever thrown in Boxing.
Going slighly backwards, & throwing the left hook with just a 6inch leverage. He knocked out Gene Fuller. Who just never saw it coming.

  • @redjam40
    @redjam40 14 років тому

Remember this - When he fought Gene Fulmer for example, Fulmer was as lengendary as the strong and bullish like Jake La Motta. For someone in our modern times Fulmer was like Chavez for durability & strength
When they fought for the second time & for the World title Ray Robinson was 37 years old, and Gene Fuler was 26 years old. In this video you see that Ray Robinson threw a left hook that made everyone stare in disbelief in what they saw.One of the best left hook every thrown in the sport!

What people do not realise that he fought more champions or world champions then anyone in the history of the sport. Sometimes he fought World champions when he was 10 years older than them (He being 37 years at the time) , & still win!
He was unique & something else in the sport as a boxer/fighter. He had a huge ego like Ali, but boxers, trainers, promotors & fight fans for him or against knew that they were seeing the greatest fighter that ever lived right in front of them.

In terms of combination punching the two best fighters in history for speed, power, & accuracy are Joe Louis & Ray Robinson. Robinson worked some of the prettiest combinations ever seen & can be considered the best ever in this category.

Why hasn’t Hollywood ever made a biopic about Sugar Ray Robinson? He was a interesting person that led a fascinating life, not to mention he was the greatest pound for pound boxer of all time, I don’t get it.

I have to say I have to congratulate you in your boxing knowledge, in fact there are a lot of people on this very thread who knowledge of the sport, boxing and of this man outstanding.
The reason why I think that Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest fighter the sport of boxing has seen so far is that he could do every thing that is asked of you in the ring. Another thing in over nearly 250 fights, he was never knocked out. He training methods were unusal as well.

I don't know about Roy Jones. Roy's skills were simply mind-boggling. True, he wasn't able to fight as long and as well as Sugar Ray but Roy's pure boxing skills are second to none.

If you wanted to try & box, and out smart Ray Robinson. He could match you & out box you. If you wanted to try and go toe to toe. He had the power to knock you out dead with either hand.
His jab was was brilliant, which after 80 years of modern day boxing. It is still the punch that boxing 90% of the time is based on.
Before Robinson there wasn't anyone that could do anything. After his career the world had witnessed the first boxer who was nearly 100% prefect.

He could out punch the punchers, and out box the boxers.
