The girl that died in the accident at Tampines recently was seated in the back seat and not buckled up. She flew out of the car when the collision happened. Use that as an example as to why it's necessary to belt up in the backseat. Buckle up for safety. I've been buckling up in the backseat for years.

Thanks Steve! The testimony from the injured cab passenger is most real! In every collision, it is a matter of split second into hell and then back. Those who had met with an accident before would agree with her.
Pls don't let any irresponsible individuals to tell you that it is ok not to wear safety belts when one is available, for whatever reasons.

Seatbelts front and back are compulsory in Australia for over 50 years, it is up to AUD$500+ fine (depending on the state) for every adult in the car not wearing a seatbelt, if a child is not wearing a seatbelt or the proper chair, the responsible adult receives the fine in their stead and demerit points, if there is enough not wearing seatbelts, the driver can actually lose their license on the spot. Australians are taught to put seatbelts on from when they are babies, it is ingrained into their minds.

What irritates me is that when I get into a taxi in Singapore and the seat belts in the rear are not properly available.
Meaning that the part that you put the buckle into is normally deep inside the seat and is difficult to pull out. And when you mention it to the driver, they react as if you have nothing better to do but annoy them.

Appreciate the demonstration, but I don't think it might have convinced those who don't belt up in the back. Some might even argue, after looking at the demo, the dummy isn't dynamic and reactive but they are and they would have used their hands to stop themselves from being thrown forward. Incidentally, if you have an airbag in front of you and you don't belt up and are thrown forward in an accident, you're putting yourself in greater risk of injury and even death. Airbags deploy very rapidly and at a great force so if you're not restrained by a seat belt, you would be thrown towards an exploding airbag. Some cars have sensors that prevent the airbags from deploying if the corresponding seat belt is not buckled but some cars don't have such sensors. So moral of the story is - always belt up. In a car, in a plane (CAT turbulence), in a bus, in a train......basically any seat when there is a seat belt available.
Personally, ever since seat belts were installed in the rear seat, I have always belted up whenever travelling in a car where seat belts are available.

That is curious. I'm from (New Zealand), well outside the USA and seatbelts started to be fitted as options here in the 1970's or so, initially just to the front seats. Later traffic laws were passed to mandate seat belts in the front seats for all cars built from 1955 or newer, and that, if installed, they must be worn.
(For awhile there, I had an older model car, that was exempt from having ANY seatbelts !).
Although there's always some folks that choose not to wear seatbelts, the nation rapidly achieved a high level of compliance. They've definitely saved my life once and saved me from nasty injuries at least, one other time.
Compulsory seat belt laws were already in place when I started driving, so to me it's always been natural and automatic to put my belt on. Indeed on the occasions I drove an older vehicle which was exempt, I found my hand reaching up to grab the non existent belt, as I took my seat.
When giving passengers rides in the back, I always ensure a seatbelt is available and is worn. It upsets me when on those rare occasions I have been given a ride in a backseat and the driver has shrugged off my request for a seatbelt "oh I had the back seat folded down earlier, the belt must be trapped underneath it. Don't worry, just go without it".
Just recently I wrote an article for my 'blog about how Princess Diana of England and her new boyfriend Billionaire Dodi Fayed, would almost certainly have survived the 1997 car crash in Paris, with minimal injuries, if only they had chosen to wear the seatbelts as fitted to the very safe model of modern Mercedes they were rear seat passengers in. (I'll try to add the text in below).
Whether you liked her or not, and whether another vehicle "helped" the crash to happen or not, there is no denying that both she (Princess Diana of England) and Dodi Fayed would have survived that crash with minimal injuries, if only they had chosen to wear their seatbelts.
Their bodyguard, who clicked his belt in, just seconds before the crash, survived with serious injuries and he was in the far-less-survivable front seat.
As rear seat passengers in what was one of the safest cars available at that time, it was their rich prick attitude that "seat belt laws don't apply to us, because we are rich" that got them both killed.
Wasn't the accident in a 60 kmh (36 mph) speed zone ? Why would they speed up to 100kmh or 160kmh just to "avoid photographers" ? (It is sensible to speed, to avoid a man shooting at you with a machine gun, for example). So it was either a low speed crash, or a high speed crash for a reason that makes no sense. (early reports about the speedometer needle being "pinned" at some number, were outright fraudulent reports. One has to wonder why those reports were made and released to the media).
Was their driver Henri drunk ? We don't know. We DO know that his blood sample was "compromised" whether by accident or deliberately.
We have been told that Diana was NOT pregnant at the time of the crash, however given that French Authorities couldn't even manage to accurately sample blood for alcohol and keep it safe, means we might be suspicious of their pregnancy test results also.
The French traffic crash investigation was so poor as to be laughable...again whether by accident or design, we can only guess.
But hey, Prince (now King) Charlie got to marry his earlier love, with whom he had already re-kindled a relationship, and she's now Queen, so she's pretty happy about the way things turned out.
But hey, there was NO conspiracy. Just ask Lee Harvey Oswald. He got his trial in court to prove his innocence didn't he ? (Maybe not !)

Last time I was in Japan, back seat passengers weren't required to wear seatbelts. I was asked why I did that and explained in Japanese that it's the law in America. The reply? Kind of weird (in Japanese, of course).
Americans can be fined for traffic violations if they're not "buckled up for safety". It's hard to enforce, though. There was a famous commercial that had crash test dummies singing the "buckle up for safety" jingle. It made a big impression on my sisters and me when we were kids.

Interesting thoughts by some of those passengers. I believe there is "NO ABSOLUTE SAFEST SEAT" in a car, when you are involved in an accident. You or your driver can be a safe driver, but you cannot guarantee the same goes for other drivers. The seat belt is to help protect your own safety, no matter the distance travelled OR the speed travelling in. Anyway, I believe the seatbelt law had been updated many years back, it is mandatory to buckle up even in the back seat, fine and points deducted. Well, if you can't buckle up, go for other mode of transportation then 😂.

People are just putting on the seatbelts to mute the sound or the driver.
Many don’t realise that people have been flung out of cars in serious accidents.
Unfortunately some cars do have poorly designed belts that rub against the neck.

It took me a while to put on seat belt when sitting at the rear. Its very simple and straightforward. Just think about it, if the driver and front passenger are always belted up (safety apart from regulatory reasons), does it even make any sense for rear passengers to be not belted? Think about this from safety angle (potentially getting into a incident/accident) and it make complete sense for every single person to be belted. Why put oneself in a disadvantage position when such situation can be eliminated?

I agree with a commentor here that the practical demo with the dummy is not very useful as visually the 40kmh and 120kmh impact "looks" similar, but we know the forces involved increases exponentially with speed. We don't know the dummy's weight either, so the demo is practically useless. Maybe putting the dummy in the middle seat and showing it fly to the front would be more convincing.

Here in South Africa passengers are required to wear a seatbelt and the driver is 100% responsible for it. Passengers are not expected to know the rules and regulations of the road. I think it's entirely fair that the driver is at least partially responsible. It is possible for them to refuse to move the car until all passengers are restrained appropriately. Although I understand this can be more difficult for taxi and ride share drivers so it makes sense to penalise the passenger as well.

It's better to have less comfort than to have no life/limb.
It takes just one unfortunate accident and you can regret it for life, i.e. if you're lucky enough to survive.
Some years ago my wife and I were travelling in a cab in Taipei, there're no requirements to belt up at the rear seat.
My wife was holding our 1 year old daughter. I've belted up and reminded her to do so, while taking over our baby. In less than 10s after she belted up, the cab driver hit another car from the opposite direction that was making an illegal U-Turn. The cab wasn't really that fast at around 40km/h, but we felt such great force from the restraining seat belt, it is like choking us. My baby girl would have been crushed between me and the front seat if the seat belt hasn't restrained me. My wife would also have suffered serious injury.
Because we have belted up, we were unscathed and could continue with our trip for the rest of the day; instead of lying in hospital bed and maybe mourning for my baby.
This was the difference that buckling up at the rear seat did for us. From then onwards, my wife needs no more reminders to belt up whether she is sitting in front or back of a car.

The demonstration is very conservative as a car typically decelerates at around 2G using brakes, while an impact can be in the order of 10G to 20G depending on what is the car hitting.
The airbags are what is known as a SRS or supplementary restraint system. Your seat belts are the PRIMARY restraint system which keeps you in place, and the airbags prevents you from slamming into the dashboard should the impact be exceedingly forceful and rams the dashboard into you (and not you into the dashboard). If you do not belt up in front, you may survive the initial impact, only to the killed by the inflating airbag because your body/head is now in the striking zone of the airbag.
I problably wouldn't be here typing this if it wasn't everyone in my car having belts in during my accident in the UK.

I thought enforcement of this was more stringent in 2009, as, at the time, I was only eight years old when i first visited Singapore. I was told by a taxi driver to sit in the back due to laws that prohibit people under 12 years old to sit in the front seat.
Even though I am a US citizen, I was visiting family in Vietnam and took a short trip to Singapore from Vietnam. At the time of my first trip to Singapore, Vietnam's seat belt laws were far more lax than they are today.

The big issue aswell is that the rear belt reminders only warn if the belt was previously buckled and then unfastened, not if you just sit down. You can see what happens in the car that has the pressure sensing rear seat warnings that don’t rely on the fastening and unfastening and work from just sitting down

Several cars in front and myself all rammed. My friend who sat in the rear, without a seat belt, was throw forward to the front seat, which bended the seat. From that day onwards, always ON.

    2 points!
    1) if someday someone did some studies and found that wearing helmet can prevent x amount of injuries or even death in an accident, do we want to start enforcement of wearing helmet in a car?
    2) Why have such law? We have been a nanny state for way too long. People are become sheep who could not recognize a wolf. And the worst situation is, people might despise the law enforcer more for nitpicking on such petty issue. My take is, allow citizen to take risk, educate them instead of keep using the stick to hit. Citizen will come to their senses if they know that they are not covered by insurance if they are not wearing a seat belt.

    • @benchiaase
      @benchiaase 4 місяці тому +4

      1) Helmet protects against head injuries, but head injuries are very uncommon in a car. So helmet in a car offers very minimal protection.
      2) It's not just about liability. It's already explained in the video that not belting up doesn't just affect you, but the other people in the car too. You become a missile and hit the people in front. It's easy to say you take your own risk but you cannot put other people at risk too.
Seat belt laws are global by the way. It's not just Singapore.
