      I remember hearing a different version where the first man was offered gold, and asked for the lump removed.
      Then when the other man is offered a reward he words it as “give me what that fool left behind.”

    Is it just me or do many japanese folktales favor the obedient and happy-go-lucky ones?

      That is a recurring theme throughout the folktales. In the stories, those who are obedient, pious, generous, and optimistic tend to be rewarded.
