    As I have said before, any animal with a black and yellow color scheme is almost always deemed attractive by human beings. The Western Mangrove Snake is one of the most impressive species in the Boiga genus. It is big, robust and they actually make pretty good captives if provided for correctly. That is what this Masterclass video is all about....thanks for watching!!!

    Another immensely interesting master class video on another spectacular Snake species. These Snakes have always been a dream Snake of mine though I have never had the opportunity to keep them so far. I almost bought a captive bred baby a few years ago. But a missed opportunity to buy a White-lipped Python represented itself a bought that instead. Mangrove Snakes were available very cheaply years ago here in the UK but came under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act at the time and required a licence to keep them. They were taken off of this list a few years ago and it appears that the captive bred young now being produced can't keep up with the demand for them. I would still love to keep one at some point in the future. I can't really think of another Snake that makes such a great display in a planted vivarium.

      Melanota are easy and after I’ve acclimated even the wc ones, my customers have no issues. The wc dendrophila from Indonesia can be in bad shape from the start and typical importers and resellers aren’t going to put any effort into a low value animal(sometimes no effort goes into a high value animal).

      Many years ago I got a feeding response bite from a very large female boa constrictor across the top of my left forearm. It wasn't my worst bite but it didn't feel good either. Almost one year to the day I was driving home from the gym and felt something sharp in that exact spot on the skin's surface. When I got home I got the tweezers and pulled a snake tooth out. It went in point first and my body turned it around in all that time and ejected it point first.

    • @DMExotics
      @DMExotics  2 роки тому +2

      I think there are some very accomplished Drymarchon breeders besides myself that have more information to offer. I don't find them difficult to breed but I think it mostly boils down to how much your are feeding and what. Sometimes raising snakes needs to be like farming where you put in constant work and attention and also on a calendar with a schedule. People not having success in part can be blamed on the same old python or boa regimen where you pull a f/t rat from your freezer every weekend(or less if you need to watch a football game or something) and say to yourself, "ok, that's done". I always had the best luck rotating food items and it seemed like almost everyday I was either feeding or pulling feeders to thaw for the next day.....on a calendar.

      @@scottnixon2899 Mites come from captive snakes…I have yet to see a snake in the wild with mites. They can enter a collection on feeders, your shoes, new animals(obvious), anything that was placed on a counter at a shop with reptiles, etc. You’ll probably never pinpoint how they entered but if you run a strict protocol/quarantine you’ll better manage it. I tend to treat all caging about every 2-3 months when things are in full swing with a larger collection, expos, new stock, feeders, etc.

      @@DMExotics I have seen/caught a few wild snakes with mites.. I use to catch wild mostly integrated Eastern/ Black kings here in Alabama and breed them in the 90's. I was told to use(and did) put them in a cloth sack and sprinkle a small amount of flea powder on them, and put a small amount under the newspaper bedding on a temporary basis. I know that sounds crazy now, but it never seemed not to have any adverse effects on them...Breed one for over 10 years before releasing her at my mom's house, she was still in great shape after finding her over a year later. I think in the wild, they rid themselves of mites when they shed, greatly reducing the number/problem..But, they really cant do this in a cage, mite numbers continually increase...It had to be a specific flea powder, and I forgot which kind ..Anyway, thanks for the information and I always look forward to your videos. Stay safe and Happy Easter...

      @DMExotics  2 роки тому

      @@scottnixon2899 You are exactly right and putting the blame on wc snakes has nothing to do with it. Go to an expo…lots of cb with mites. It really boils down to the keeper and conditions. You could now go to your buddy’s house and bring one to your collection on the bottom of your shoe. When we return from an expo we treat everything all over again. The amount of people setting purses and cell phones on my displays after they have been placed on everyone’s else’s displays is irritating.
