If you ask most folks who was the best SOUTHERN ROCK BAND, you will hear two names: The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Both recorded and made in Muscle Shoals, AL. I put the Allmans at number 1, but I can't argue with anyone that puts Skynyrd first. And I tap my hat to both.
“Chunked him in the clay.” Many people say “chucked” but in most of the South it’s “chunked”. Either way, it means to casually throw something away without a second thought. In other words, Curtis was buried and forgotten.
He said that when it came time for Mr Curtis Loew to depart this sphere, nobody showed up at the funeral, nobody came to pray. The 'ole preacher said some words and then chucked him in the clay.
They say it was something in the Tennessee River. They had a house that would live at called the HELL house. Then Ronnie took them to the Muscles Shoal recording studio.....history. There is a documentary on Lynard Skynyrd and one titled Muscle Shoals
I was 14 years old when I heard this song for the first time. I had started playing bass guitar when I was 10… this song shaped and formed my groove and musical feel the first time I heard it. Thanks for reacting to it. Opened the memory floodgates for sure!! 😎
Also might add. In the lyrics preacher man chucked in the clay. I'm from Savannah. Just above Jacksonville, FL. Red clay all down. Preach chuck aka toss in the grave of Curtis Lowe. Skynyrd was I first concert ever in Savannah. That was in '77. I was 17
Rock music was borne from soul, rhythm & blues, country, bluegrass, and jazz. The one spot on the map where all those things came together in the 1950's was Memphis TN. 20 years later you can hear all those influences in bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd
GLAD YOU ARE CHECKING OUT SKYNYRD!!! YET, MY BROTHER, THAT IS JACKSONVILLE, FLA. SOUTHERN ROCK!!!!! AIN'T NO P-FUNK GOIN' DOWN HERE. CHECK OUT MORE, AND MORE. YOU SHALL ENJOY & SEE!!! PEACE MY BROTHER!!! KEEP ROCKIN '!!!!!!!
The line was ... on the day that Curtis died, nobody came to pray. Old preacher man said some words, and they chucked him in the clay. They came of what is now Orange Park Florida ( not Jacksonville as most think). The road sign for brick yard road was stolen so much that they encased it in concrete. Call me the breeze is another great song.
Might not be correct grammar but down south it's CHUNKED. I just looked up the lyrics and that's what it says. Same thing I've been singing for 50 years when i sing along to one of my favorite Skynyrd tunes.
It's the same county the largest county in the country, that's why Jacksonville claims them because they're the largest big city near where are they started. They started covering Allman Brothers tunes, until they met the Allman Brothers which inform them that they need to make their own music.
@@MugnifyRTS”Mr.Banker” & “ Four walls of Raiford “ are a couple of their best blues rock sound. “ I know a little “ is a great upbeat tune similar to “ Mr.Breeze “ that you enjoyed. Thx!
The lyric was "Ol' preacher said some words and they chunked him in the clay Well he lived a lifetime playin' the black man's blues And on the day he lost his life that's all he had to lose
@jtrutt3 agreed...RHCP's were from California and, one of the pioneers of punk rock, rap rock. Lynyrd Skynyrd was from Florida and one of the pioneers of southern rock...straight from the Delta. There's no comparison (IMO)
Listen to the chorus of "Soul to Squeeze" and then do the same with this song. The accents are way different, but there is a similarity in tone. Kiedis's voice is deeper, and Van Zant's has more twang.
Second Helping was the first thing I bought after cashing my very first paycheck back in the day. Second stop was my buddy's house,. Where I popped my new Skynyrd tape into his tape deck. Figured I'd check it out quick. While he weighed out a nickel bag of red haired sinsi . Which turned out to be, my second purchase. After cashing my very first paycheck.
They are one of the bands that created the "Southern Rock Sound" genre. There were quite a few bands that created and evolved the southern rock sound, The Almond Brothers, The Doobie Brothers, Georgia Satellites, and later Black Oak Arkansas, Molly Hatchet, ZZ Top and many others. My favorite Genre of Rock Music. Just throw a dart when picking the next one from lynyrd Skynyrd to review because they are ALL great songs, and you can't go wrong. So, admit it, you will probably end up listening to most of them anyway eventually. Enjoy!
Chunking somebody in the clay is burying a beggar without funds or family in the county burial plot. The pauper's grave is usually unmarked and often there isn't even a coffin. A sad legacy for a life lived.
You were just doing your impersonation of what you can remember from that song, and I'm like man I can Name That Tune in four notes Loyd! Underneath the bridge is awesome but you should also check out suck my kiss. Then you will hear why they were such a sensation. It's from that same blood sugar Sex
Good ears to catch some Psychedelic influence cause Legendary Skynyrd guitarist Ed King playing on this was prior the guitarist for the 60s Psychedelic rock band "Strawberry Alarm Clock"
"The preacher said some words and they chunked him in the clay" they chunked Curtis Loew in the clay (they buried him quick...disrespectfully) This song is purportedly based off of the writers true experience. One of my all time favorites by them.
Not sure if you missed it, but Curtis Loew was a black man about 60 w white, curly hair. When he died, he didnt have a thing except his life. "The preacher said some words and they chunked him in the clay." The song is paying respect "to the finest picker to ever play the blues." Definitely 🔥🔥🔥 and the volume goes up every time its on. Wish i could have heard Curt!
I, too, got whooped.. Anyway, there really isn’t any bad songs by them. Growing up in the 90’s we considered it Southern Rock and sometimes, Outlaw Country.
Mug, if you ever get around to a full album reaction of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers " Blood Sugar Sex Magik," well, that days gonna be a party, youll love it!🤘🥳
Anthony Kiedis his father was an actor in La I forget on what sitcom he appeared in as a kid. I know he likes some band called flash something and and Grand Funk I can't remember I knew him when he was really bad on that heroin

Call Me the Breeze. Unbelievably great song. One of the best songs ever. Yes a Skynard song has horns. A must react. 😊

LOVE Lynyrd Skynyrd! First concert I ever went to, 1976.

On the hunt From skynyrd is a great underrated song

This was the song that really hooked me on Skynyrd. Teenage me heard this and thought, "Oh, ok, these guys are serious"
"Ol' preacher said some words and they chunked him in the clay"

I used to hang out with Anthony I can't believe that this guy's voice even brought Anthony Kiedis to mind
I can kinda hear it. Kinda. Ronnie has more blues in his sound, but the basic tone is kinda similar.

Skynyrd - “On The Hunt”
That same song was also covered by bands The Obsessed and Corrosion Of Conformity.

the breeze❤❤
Crazy. I never put that together. In that opening, he sounded exactly like Anthony Kiedis. Good ear man
Skynyrd’s the best. I saw them when I was 15 years old in 1976.
I’m 63 now, still jam Skynyrd a lot.

Chucked him in the clay
Other people judging a person they don't know.
At the very beginning, he said Curtis was a black man with white curly hair. Then later the preacher said some words then chucked him in the clay
He dropped him in the clay
It's "chucked" him in the clay. Basically they just threw him in and covered him
He said "chucked him in the clay"
It's called Southern Rock.
Scar Tissue is the song from RHCP
Check out The Breeze. On The Hunt.,Gimme Back My Bullets. ✌
BTW, Smell That Smell is well worth listening to!
It's Southern Rock with blues influence. Most Southern Rock has blues roots
THIS is their best song

POISON WHISKEY might be their best song.
If you think Skynyrd sounds psychedelic, listen to the Allman Bros. Skynyrd, Allman Bros, Marshall Tucker. Peak of Southern Rock

You should use lyrics version
"Said some words then chunked him into clay"
"Chucked him in the clay" is what the lyrics were!
"THAT SMELL" is a good one from LS but listen carefully alot of people get the meaning wrong.
Listened to Lynyrd and RHCP for years and never picked up on the cadence similarities until you mentioned that
You need to do. That Smell. the Skynyrd true sound
Said some words then chunked him in the clay. I hear him sayin' , Black face blues also.
More LS please!
It said the preacher said some words an they chunked him in the clay
