Steaming to Legacy is a unique retrospective fan documentary that tells the story of the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry, and his beloved children’s book series about the Fat Controller’s really useful engines, which eventually become a phenomenal franchise for over seventy years.
Featuring the voice of Enterprisingengine93, along with archival footage, pictures and interview audios from behind the scenes.
The story continues after the first two Railway Series books, it spawned huge merchandising for the readers and fans everywhere. Meanwhile Wilbert Awdry entered his early retirement after writing Tramway Engines and the Surprise Packet, which were both published in 1972.
Eleven years later in 1983, since his father’s ideas for the twenty-seventh book volume had run dry, Christopher stepped in to become an ambitious author of both the Railway Series and tie-in Thomas books.
In addition, this legendary piece of history features the origins of the popular television series that premiered on October 9th, 1984.

Enterprising Engines. It is a fine example of showcasing steam engines struggling to survive when diesels are so common place.

My favorite RWS book is definitely Enterprising Engines! As it has so many great ideas of how useful steam engines still are even if people prefer more modern technology, and I like the Wilbert the Forest Engine book, because he was such an awesome character that should definitely be brought into the series!

Mountain Engines is my favourite Railway Series novel.
It got dark very quickly and I can definitely understand why it was never adapted for television. It was too much grit for such a young audience.
However, from an adult point of view, I enjoy this book very much. The characterisation is pretty spot on, although I've heard some argue that Lord Harry is a remodelling of Duncan, the story itself that he goes on is a very different one.
Top stuff and I reccomend it to any Thomas fan.

SmurfyDan I think besides that point, the reason Mountain Engines wasn’t adapted (as well as the Small Railway Engines) was probably because back in the day the models would’ve been too complicated to build unless they were unmotorized and dragged along with strings or something.

My favourite Railway Series book was "Mountain Engines." The stories were kinda different from the normal stories in my mind. Showing that danger could be around any corner on the railway.

Predictable, but my favourite book was always Stepney The Bluebell Engine. Its always been interesting to see the Railway Series change and adapt according to the real life change to railways in Britain in the 60's, setting them a reality that other creations just cannot grasp. Living close to the Bluebell Railway it always had a way of stamping my belief that the stories were in the real world, and more relatable to. The illustrations in the book by Gunvor and Peter Edwards are phenomenal, and the morals are lovely!

Once again another excellent chapter. I really enjoyed the discussion on the failed attempts prior to the TV series, that was really interesting. The only narrator you didn't mention was Sir John Gielgud, but that isn't a big problem. I really liked all the pictures, video and audio you used. Great job! :)

An amazing 2nd Chapter. I can't wait to see what Chapter 3 holds in store.
As for favourite book(s): Branchline Engines or Stepney the Bluebell Engine. Branchline Engines mainly because (as semi-explained in my comment for Chapter 1) it contains the story that got me into the show in the first place. Stepney the Bluebell Engine because of Stepney's backstory. Sure the show butchered part of it, but it remains one of my favourite books, regardless.

It's sad to think that a bunch of stories were never made into the show like mountain engine because of it was too dark but still it would be nice to see them just like how tit for tat was made into the show now even though that book came out a years ago so basically they took advantage of the reintroduction of the small engines and adapted the book into the show WITH CG! Shows the creativity and love andrew Brenner puts into the show

My favorite railway series book: Stepney the "Bluebell" Engine
Why: It got really dark in the 1st story itself, and the concept of a Bluebell engine makes for very memorable stories, especially the story of "Bowled Out". :)

    • @brightredmogul1912
      @brightredmogul1912 4 роки тому

And not to mention that this is the first RWS story entirely dedicated to an engine that actually exists in real life! I’m not talking about engines who were just based on real life engines - Stepney the Bluebell Engine does indeed exist, as well as the Bluebell Railway!

I'd say my top favourite Railway Series book is Thomas the Tank Engine because Thomas was the very first engine I knew. I had a thing for James, but Thomas was my real favourite engine. How he was cheeky, brave, hardworking, he reminded me of myself.

Great installment! Looking forward to more! My favorite book would have to be Main Line Engines (gosh golly gee. What a surprise XD). Other Wilbert Awdry favorites include Enterprising Engines, Small Railway Engines, Duck and the Diesel Engine, Mountain Engines, Very Old Engines, and Mountain Engines. My favorites from Christopher Awdry would be Really Useful Engines, Henry and the Express, Jock the New Engine, Thomas and the Twins, and Thomas and the Great Railway Show.

My favorite RWS volume is the 2nd one, "Thomas the Tank Engine." The story arc of Thomas turning from cheeky prankster to responsible branch line engine is my favorite in the whole series. It also has two of my favorite scenes in the series, Thomas sulking while his snowplow is being fitted, and a grateful James being rescued by the breakdown train (is his name Harvey?).

my favourite RWS is The Three Railway Engines becouse i think it sounds beutifull the theme and everything elese, i think that story should had a squeal in the later years and when i saw a very accurate remake of the book and compar it with TTTE Season 1 i think that story of a normal day for an engine like edward or gordon is really educational and fun to read, i really like these series that you are making about TTTE. keep up the good work!!

My favourite book in the Railway series was "Mountain Engines", because it was based on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, where I grew up.
The Number 4 Train, Snowdon (Culdee in the book) still travels up the mountain today, and I've ridden in its coaches many times.
The story "Bad Lookout" was based on an identical accident that took place on the Railway's opening day - in real life, a passanger died after injuring himself when jumping from the coach as the train slipped off the mountain. It's the ONLY difference between the real events and the book, which made it feel more "in the moment" to me, whenever I go up there.

Fantastic. I had no idea at all that there were problems with trying to get the series onto the TV screens back then. I guess it was a matter of finding the right person to bring it to television. Thank heavens for Britt Allcroft and the team. Ringo Starr was the best man to start the narrating :).
As for my favourite book, that's a hard one. I liked a lot of them. But I would say 'Branch Line Engines' was one of my favourites. Because it focused a lot on what happened on Thomas Branch Line whilst he was away being repaired. Each one was about Thomas, Percy, Toby and Daisy.

Thomas and friends have a deep history like no other in a good and bad way. In my opinion, no other train show can outdo Thomas and Friends because it's too solid. The foundation had be laid. It has impacted lives, taught valid, pure long to think and meditate on lessons. The more history revealed to us about Thomas, the more I would love to go up there myself and help out, though I'm only 18, I could still make a difference.

As for my favorite RWS book, I would have to say "Mountain Engines" for a couple of reasons:
-Its the only one to focus on a different type of locomotive built for an interesting purpose (mountain climbing, in this case).
-The Mountain Engines have two faces (a thing that really had me hooked when I was younger)
-The stories about perseverance and bravery really appealed to me.
-And, sadly, there was only one book that featured them (would've loved to have seen more of them in the books; even more-so for them to appear in the TV series).

If I had to choose an book by the Rev W Awdry, it would have to be a tie between "Enterprising Engines" and "Mountain Engines". I liked the maturity of Enterprising Engines and I find the mountain railway to be interesting. If I had to choose a Christopher Awdry book, I would have to say "Thomas and the Great Railway Show" probably because it was nice to see all the different British engines like Mallard and Green Arrow.

To be honest I'm torn between - Stepney The Bluebell Engine, Mainline Engines and Enterprising Engines.
I like Stepney The Bluebell Engine because I am a volunteer at the Bluebell Railway and therefore am fascinated buy anything to do about railway, and I also like the fascinating and enjoyable stories and "Stepney himself" who is one of my top five favourite characters in the series.
I like Mainline Engines because it's the debut book that introduces Bill and Ben, (which is one of the best introductions to any characters in the series) I think there are some very funny moments and very engaging moments in the stories which are both balanced very well and I think that these "set of stories" are very iconic in terms of Thomas the Tank Engine.
And finally I like Enterprising Engines because it's set in a period in time steam locomotives had just been abolished from British railways, I love that introduces the Fying Scotsman into the railway series #thegreatrace and I think the stories of Enterprising Engines are some of the best written stories in entire series with "Super Rescue" being my favourite in the book.
But overall, all of the stories are some of the best written in the entire series and out of these free I really can't think favourite.
    I'll let you decide ;)

My favorite book from the Railway Series is Small Railway Engines or Mountain Engines (from the Rev. W. Awdry because they introduce me to another group of railway characters I never seen on television, and their stories are wonderfully written) and Gordon the High-Speed Engine (from Christopher Awdry because of how determined Gordon is to fix his mistakes).

Ted Ray was basically the warmup for Mr. Perkins, only 40-odd years before! :P
Anyway, my favorite RWS book is Thomas the Tank Engine, because it follows his early years on Sodor from the immature tank engine in the beginning of the book, to the really useful maturing locomotive he has become. I mean, there's a reason it's the Rev's most famous book of all of them. :)

Yes you can tell that this was one of those Photoshop image edits I did for funsies, just to imagine if Ted Ray really did his reading session in a stationmaster's office. :)

My favorite RWS story is Down the Mine, because it teaches people not to be overconfident in ourselves.

2:15 is a first edition copy of "The three Railway Engines" rarer than the recording?
13:20 I always think James is dark blue in the illustrations!
19:00 I never noticed Thomas' number is out of position!
My favorite Railway Series book is "The Eight Famous Engines" because it was the first RWS title I read and got as achristmas gift when I was seven!

I was torn between Gordon The Big Engine and More About Thomas The Tank Engine. My favorite story overall is Percy's Porridge from Wilbert The Forest Engine, and my favorite Fan Work related to the RWS is definitely the adaptations by Bluebells5529.

As I'm a Brit, I admire how you've found all that footage from British television etc. Hearing the TV-am theme again brings back such memories. Incidentally the interviewer you see with Ringo is Michael Aspel.

My favorite RWS book is anywhere from Enterprising Engines to Henry the Green Engine to Oliver the Western Engine to Little Old Twins to Branch Line Engines to The Eight Famous Engines to Troublesome Engines to Duck and the Diesel Engine to Stepney the Bluebell Engine. Any of those books or anything like that are my favorites.
