One of my favorite things about this show...The characters actually talk to each other! How many times have you seen shows or movies where each character has one piece of the puzzle and don't share that shit with the others...not Stranger Things...and it's still awesome!

The show gave us plenty of hints last season that the Upside Down was trying to expand into our world through the gate that Eleven created. Over the course of that season, the room and hallway near the gate gradually filled up with that weird fungus and the air became filled with spores. What we're seeing now in season 2 is that, despite the lab's efforts to contain it, the Upside Down has escaped the lab and is contaminating the surrounding area. We saw it with the rotten trees and dead crops earlier in the season.
