    It's been a little over year since the release of Bambu's Party Worker album. Funded by the people and supported by Beatrock Music, Party Worker dropped to an overwhelming response and kept Bambu busy with the Party Worker Live Tour at the top of 2015. Thank you to everyone who supported the Party Worker album.
    Before the one-year mark, Anthony Ignacio shot the visuals for the Frank Grimes produced song, Progressive Tax to conclude the Party Worker series.

    That line about the schools looking like prisons is pure genius. A person, especially a kid, is likely to have an attitude that reflects their environment.

    Bambu is always a master, but this song is a bit off. A progressive tax protects lower-income families by reducing their tax obligation. The absolute poor pay no tax. The working classes pay smaller percentages, and the middle classes pay more. The wealthy, if they don't hide their money in tax shelters, are supposed to pay the most. The lyrics in the song never explain how a progressive tax is actually regressive. The hook sounds nice, but it implicitly attacks a system that is good for low-income families. I'd love to hear more about why it's not positive.

      @KaninoWorldIsThis 8 років тому +3

      I'd like to add that it's not just tax shelters, but in capital gains, where the wealthy avoid tax.
      The song itself should not be an essay for you to gain all knowledge on the tax system, it's just meant to bring attention to the issue.

      +KaninoWorldIsThis Bambu is definitely PRO Progressive Tax. "The more money you make, the more money they take - they ain't gon' stop until we breakin' the bank" speaks at face value. We want to dismantle the banks - progressive taxation will help fold institutions who rely on giant money to exist. The hook is an ode to an old party hook. Party Worker titles don't necessarily have to do with the song... Minimum Wage doesn't speak directly to the issue around wage increase. Comrades doesn't necessarily break down the dynamics of what it means to be a comrade. But in the hooks, there are reflections of that break down. The song itself is more about just stretching out as an emcee than it is about financial structures. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for your comment.

      +Beatrock Music - Thanks for your reply. I understand your statement that titles of songs don't necessarily represent the content, although I'd be really interested in Bambu engaging in direct discussions of structural issues like taxation and wages. I just think that the hook HEAVILY suggests that progressive taxation is bad. "The more money you make, the more money they take" reads as if people just can't catch a break: if they come up and make more money, then more just gets taken away. Which, while technically true, is a very different perspective than "the less money you make, the less money they take", which is the whole point of that tax structure. Sure, break the banks. I'm down. I just think the phrasing is kind of murky (no offense).
      On the actual content side, the prison lyrics are really good. If y'all haven't read Wacquant's "Punishing the Poor" it's the shit, and talks about how welfare and the prison state work together. A good overview is here: www.rosalux.de/class-in-crisis/class-in-crisis-freitag/the-making-and-unmaking-of-the-precariat.html. Check out Part 2. Dude is crazy French, but smart. Keep up the great music.

    The answers that Bambu looks for will not be found in the systems he preaches for, or, against. It will only found in the wisdom of his ancestors and the other islander peoples who bring that wisdom to their fight for freedom today. He needs to spend more time in Hawaii and heʻll find the connect to his ancestors as well as the answers and the home that his heart is looking so hard for. Salamat po - Mahalo no!
