what if at the 4:32 mark 682.52 had two sig. figs. Would this change the answer? Would it then be 810

What if you multiplied 4.52 x 302? There are 3 SF in the calculation but the answer is 1365.04 or 6 SF.

The next step would be rounding to 3 sig figs. So 1365.04 would be rounded to the firs three digits and you can use zeros as non-significant place holders so you'd get 1370. (The 5 makes the 6 round up)

Thank you for your tutor. I applied exactly what you said on my homework but I don't understand why I couldn't get the right answer.
Here is the question: 320.30 - (6106.1 /2.4). My answer is -2224 because in the quotient the smallest sig fif is 2 so no decimal , 320.30 has 2 decimal. Thus my answer do not have a decimal.
However, the answer on the book is -2.2 *10^3.
    Can you help me ?
    Thank you

I think I can help you out. My answer for the problem was actually -2200 and I used his method to solve it. The answer to (6106.1/2.4) comes to 2544.20833 and since it is division, we have to keep in mind that we round the answer to the least amount of sig figs. In this case the number 2.4 has the lesser amt of sig figs (only 2). So when we subtract 320.30 from 2544.20833 we get the answer of 2223.90833 and for subtracting we look at the decimal places and we think that 2223.90 should be answer. But you forgot that it’s actually 25 not 2544.20833. So the answer actually rounds to 2 digits and your are left with 2200 or 2.2 * 10^3
I hope this helped!! If not, there are many other videos on UA-cam explaining this same thing

Sorry at the end -2200 or -2.2 * 10^3 I forgot to put the negative sign :)

Mary's question and Namya's response was the information necessary to understand this concept. Thanks both!

      U are wrong.
When substracting we only look at least number of decimal places to finalise our answer. I got answerv2.220×10^3 as the answer.
