Winter snow storm hits the boat Ep.43

  • The reason we decided to keep the boat in Charleston is that it is above the hurricane belt and famous for its mild winters.
    Yeah, right.
Last week it snowed, and it snowed and we huddled down with a broken heating unit and tried to keep ourselves warm with candles and a small heater.
All very romantic in theory. The reality was very different.

Terysa ... that beautiful snow you’re enjoying doesn’t even come close to the beauty you exhibit (and I’m not talking just about your outward appearance).
I’ve watched enough of your episodes to observe that you’re a real jewel of a person with a genuinely sweet spirit and all the grace and patience necessary to tolerate Nick when he’s at his grumpiest.
We all love Nick, warts and all (as you can see from the thousands of comments in your channel posts) ... but I think you have been a huge (and equal) part of your channel’s success.
Nick is indeed a very lucky fellow to have you in his life ...

When I was young in the 50's and 60's, grand ma had and used hot water bottles. Raising kids in the 90's we have never thought of using them, but we lived where a cold night would be 6 C in mid winter. Moved to foot hills in Northern California we might see snow once in 7 years and just a dusting. I think with having central heat and air or electric blankets it makes the hot water bottle pretty well the way of the Dodo. I have never seen a "dual" purpose bottle, it's a hot water bottle or an enema bag, but marketing what it is it makes sense. My son lives in Virginia, I like my left coast. Stay warm so enjoy your videos, have a safe trip to the UK. Cheers!

You guys can also opt for a space heater. You can pick one up at either Loews or Home Depot. They sell for about 50.00-70.00 US dollars. Get one with an automatic shut off thermostat.

OMG so funny aout the Hot Water Bottle. You are so correct, I would only use it for a water bottle never thought of it as an enema bottle, uck. Glad you threw the rest away. Was laughing so hard when you talked about it's dual purpose. Great video guys! Stay warm.

It's adorable to see Terysa so happy in the snow. I'm with you mate, I hate the cold. I am still suck a couple hours south getting my boat repaired (and emptying a house) but as soon as it's done, I'll be heading south. Having grown up around here, I can say it's most always cold in the South during winter. Temperate weather starts mid-Florida.
About the hot water bottles, we simply don't use them. In 'murica, we turn up the thermostat.

Well our Espar failed as well , just before Christmas , I was lucky enough to have a connection through a friend and got ours up and running before the cold snap here Gibsons BC ,Canada,we are on our 380 Catalina this winter , we saw some -8 c over night but nothing sustained , and no freezing rain ,and just a skiff of snow , alas we had no water on the docks for 3 weeks !
Fortunately we have dirt dweller friends that help out if we need help , back to normal now ..its way better than our home town which has been down to -45 c a few times in the last 3 weeks..!!

“The thistle attachment”....Nick is hilarious. I too grew up with the hot water bottle as the aid to every ailment so when I went in search of one after moving here to NYC, I was baffled that no one knew what the hell I was talking about whenever I inquired about where the hot water bottles were located in the pharmacy. Finally, some poor soul finally figured out what I was asking for, then sent me on my way with my very own thistle attachment. ; ) hope you guys didn’t get caught in all of that melee with the flooded baggage at JFK. When it's an enema bottle, it's 6 ft in the air. The only thing that is contaminated is the plastic insertion part. lol
Seriously though, regarding the electric heater, pay attention to where it is pointed and also to the plug and cord, etc. Those things can consume nearly all the electrical capacity of a typical circuit. When running constantly, the plug and socket can get hot along with other parts of the electrical distribution system.
When something is foreseeable, it's not an accident! Be well and Fair Winds....

Top tip, get a terracotta flower pot (a big one that fits the whole hob - covers both rings) you can keep it in a locker & fill it with fishing gear etc. When needed, turn it upside down and put it on the hob. Heat it up then turn off the gas. It radiates heat for hours, a common trick for high latitudes sailors.

You just solved my biggest problem!!!
Last month I moved aboard my Downeaster 38 in Mystic Connecticut. Heating my boat has been my biggest challenge. I’ve tried electric heaters but it’s so cold I can’t keep an uninsulated boat warm on 10,000 BTUs. (Any more power and I trip the breaker‘s). I’ve used a portable kerosene heater to supplement and it created a layer of soot inside my cabin that will take me weeks to clean. (Yes, I was operating it properly and tried two different models). NEVER did I even consider using my propane stove and oven to heat the boat! Duh!!! Watching this episode was an “ah ha” moment!!! Why did I not f’ing think of that ??!!

Great video again guys. My first season living aboard now was quite a wakeup since it was 9F last week (-5F wind chill) here in North Carolina (I've spent the past many years mostly living in deserts). We've had two boats in the marina sink halfway overnight due absent owners not closing off seacocks in unheated boats causing the input filters to crack their glass housings. Neither was evident until a few days after thawing. Gonna be below freezing for the next week too but thankfully not that cold. It's been interesting not having marina water for a couple of weeks. Luckily I'm only using it for dishes since I haven't cleaned out the tanks or hoses yet.

Tips about 4X4's, the front axle turns slower than the rear. This helps to gain traction in mud, but has the opposite effect on icy or snowy roads. What you want is an AWD or All Wheel Drive. In one of those the axle's turn at the same rate to more easily facilitate city driving in inclement weather.
If you want to prove to yourself how different the axle turning rates are, simply get on dry pavement and engage it. The car will move, but it will complain a lot about it. The tires will leave skid marks and the transfer case will grind the entire time.
You should still enjoy the snow though.

Hi from Montreal where it’s raining now and were expecting 30 cm of snow between tonight and tomorrow (Saturday).
Nick, if I can offer you ANY sound advice it’s to keep the canvas top free of snow (heave it off by pushing underneath), and the canvas sides free from ice buildup. Be as diligent as you can. It’s heavier than it looks. Keep the hatches, vents, port lights clear for ventilation, etc as best you can.
Then have fun with Theresa. There’s little else you can do weather wise, so why not use the energy for fun.

    • @phygital1

I think the hot water bottles went by the wayside in the early 60's with the advent of central heating. Still, a nice item to have in emergency situations. I remember that my flat in London had radiant heat, so yeah, there were cold spots in the bedroom and I can see that hot water bottles could still be useful. Stay warm!

26 degrees?!?!? That's *really* warm! I'm in Bristol at the moment and I have a electric thermostatic heater that doesn't let the temperature drop below 12 degrees when I'm not on the boat (to reduce the condensation) and the Webasto central heating switches off at 21 degrees as otherwise the place is a Sauna!
By the way, dump the eberspatcher; they have really expensive parts. You can find a Webasto second hand anywhere for less than the price of a service kit on the ebespatchers. Webasto is used by car makers as pre-heaters on things like landrovers and cold environment cars (and lorry cab heaters) so they are dirt cheap, plenty of spares and can be fixed with a hammer. They just don't have the appropriate yachty credentials!

I LOVE the name for Mr, Complainsalot, he thinks anyone might care about his discomfort, when actually the more he complains the more pleasure we gain.

I laugh so hard when Teresa is all bubbly and happy and Nick is pissy....I do understand the conc r n for damage to the boat. It was such a freak storm to the whole East coast. Oh to have been a fly on the wall when the Walmart employee handed Nick an enema kit!!!! Great laughs!

We have 4 seasons in South Carolina, sometimes all in one week, but if you go to Texas, you can have all 4 in 1 day.

Be sure to keep a dehumidifier running and some heat. Caution on condensation on cabin roof as ice and snow melts.

It must be nice to have them there. Pity the weather 's so extreme - although 2 days in a row of +41 deg in ADL also rates as on the extreme side. :)

A good layer of snow will insulate the boat and keep you warmer.
