    Ive always wanted a miniature one to keep on my person. I'm a bit of a pre-humanist font kind of girl.
    I adore your puffy gold leaves and use of rubric. Also, the charming things around the edges.. yes. You are right, can't go past a snail. depends on the situation, you could have a knight fighting one!

    This takes historical accuracy for a film to a whole new level. Very impressive level of care to the point of the pricking of the vellum. It brings to mind an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art back in 2008, The Art of Illumination. Due to conservation work it was decided to unbind the famous 15th century 'Belles Heures' of Jean de France, Duc du Berry. As a result for the first time since the manuscript was made, all the pages could be displayed at once. It brought into focus the actual process of how these luxury books would have been made. Had this demonstration existed it would have been a great addition to the exhibition to give a greater degree of understanding to the modern viewers of amount of work involved in these masterpieces of civilization.

    Awfully good video with clear explanation of the process for completing an illuminated manuscript - in this case a Book of Hours.In my younger years ( in my mid 70`s now ) and after qualifying at Oxford, I worked - for a while in a Company who specialized in manuscript conservation and production of facsimiles of manuscripts,( as in this video ) mostly for museum display, where the original was considered too delicate and too important to be on display. Sadly, the Company has long since ceased to be, and I believe many displays these days are digital with pages that can be swiped to turn.After a lifetime crossing the globe to study original manuscripts, I now enjoy the many collections available on line, and beautiful videos such as this, thank you :)

      The stories you could tell. Did you discover any occult magical secrets?

      @@leodf1 Difficult not to ! The Medieval period ( up to the 15th Century ) was one in which the Church dominated peoples beliefs, kept the population in a state of ignorance and a fear of eternal damnation. Aspects of the occult, necromancy, witchcraft and heresy were around every corner, ready to snare the gullible, and many religious books reinforced this fear of God with pictorial marginalia depicting a host of impossible creatures doing unspeakable things.

    Thank you for your comment William. If the paint is good quality, and I use Schmincke Calligraphy Gouache for both painting and calligraphy, then there should be sufficient adhesive in the paint to ensure that it is secure and remains on the writing surface without additional covering. Hope this helps.

    It's a marvellous piece! Testament to your great knowledge, skills and aesthetic. Would you mind telling us what the 'modern adhesive' for your gilding is please? Miniatum perhaps?

    The book was hand-made by a binder who sadly has now gone out of business. However, there are book binders who work in this way and can create such a book.

    Patricia, this piece was ephemeral for use in a movie, but are you concerned about using gouache over egg tempera in terms of its vulnerability to water and humidity? Would the original medium have been gouache?

    • @patricialovettmbe-calligraphy
      @patricialovettmbe-calligraphy  7 років тому +1

      Dear Steve, thank you for your comment. Yes the original medium would have been egg tempera. I've never had problems of humidity with gouache and is what I use all the time now - life is a bit too short for me to use egg tempera I'm afraid!

    • @patricialovettmbe-calligraphy
      @patricialovettmbe-calligraphy  6 років тому +1

      The original medium would of course be egg tempera, Steve, you are quite right there. However, egg tempera is a faff and temperamental. I don't use it now nor teach it. Gouache is the closest we have to tempera and I use it all the time for all my work, most of which is on vellum. Like tempera the consistency of the paint needs to be workable but quite 'dry', the consistency of thin, runny cream, so that it doesn't affect the surface of the skin, and care needs to be taken over large areas of paint. See my Calligraphy Clip on missing colours - which applies for writing and painting (www.patricialovett.com)

    How do you seal the paint not to stick to the opposite page in humid conditions? Is it egg tempera, guache or watercolor? Wax on top?

    This is actually how I would usually work and pin prick paper or vellum to indicate the line spacing when doing most pieces of work. Please do also see the films featuring me that were produced for the British Library's 'Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms' exhibition and also their Polonsky Project both available online.
