  • After more than 100 years, Master Lock's iconic factory in Milwaukee is shutting its doors in March 2024. The closure will result in 400 lost union jobs, and also mark the end of a former industrial region of the city that once housed some 50 plants. The Real News, In These Times, and Workday Magazine speak with current and former Master Lock workers on what the closure of this longstanding plant means for them and their community.
    This video was made in partnership with Workday Magazine, In These Times, and The Real News Network.

    I'm 52. I've watched American business after American business jump the shark like this. Our business model tells a false story of endless growth potential. EVERY business will plateau at some point. An intelligent CEO would leave the cash cow rolling at the top of its game and begin looking for NEW ways to generate revenue under the same brand.
    We do NOT have intelligent CEOs anymore. What they do instead is begin "cost cutting" to generate false revenue increases after a plateau is reached. This degrades the product and destroys the care and pride employees once had. Once this process begins, the end of the company is INEVITABLE. You cant regain customers who lose faith in your product and you cant repair a broken employee culture once you show your workers they mean nothing to you.

    That’s awful of Master Lock to do that to long-time employees. However, due to their designs, their locks are easily defeated, and it has likely been impacting their sales as awareness spread.
    Too bad they didn’t invest in improving them to increase reputation and thus sales and margin rather than cutting employees to reduce costs.

      Stock dividends run counter to reinvestment for product improvement. Upgrading quality would yield the highest revenue stream. Dividends reflect the demands of rent-seeking elites and other big investors. Stock holders who need money can sell shares. Dividends bleed companies of working capital. That’s not capitalism. I feel ya'll's pain, In the small town that I live in the only work that pays enough to live off of was a paper mill that has been here since 1951 and they closed it down earlier this month. The town I live in is where the most recent hurricane that hit the big bend of Florida made landfall as a category 3. The paper mill only slowed production during the hurricane ( in other words people had to go to work), then as the community was trying to get a handle on the damage came an announcement in the local paper. It had been approximately a week when they released the news that they would be shutting the plant down permanently. Our whole county relied on that mill for 90% of the economy, with all of the business that are here to serve the paper mill depending on it as their sole provider. It really sucks

      if it's Mexico, it's actually China.
      Mexicans can have basic jobs assembling higher-quality parts made in China (fully automated), which nobody can profitably produce competitively in USA or anywhere in the West.
      meanwhile, MasterLock can still make a profit nevertheless

    • @overseeingeye
      @overseeingeye 6 місяців тому +3

      @@SaintFluffySnow That's right, I forgot about that. Russian Petrochemicals go to India, then to Europe. Chinese goods go to Mexico, then to U.S.A. The additional cost for the added middlemen is shouldered by the European and American public. Makes perfect sense.

    • @SaintFluffySnow
      @SaintFluffySnow 6 місяців тому

      btw: since MasterLock made locks including whole process, which dealt with metallurgy, hardening, chemicals (electroplating), machining, etc
      it was more complicated and hazardous, so, Unionization was necessary to protect workers since Master Lock would NOT otherwise bother to protect anyone
      such scenario was expensive and cut into profits MasterLock was unwitting to accept
      with simpler assembly work involved using outsourced parts, minus complicated hazardous processes, expensive Unionized workers became unnecessary
      thus, a move elsewhere within USA makes sense for USA market
      and a move elsewhere to Mexico makes sense for its local market
      ditto: repeat elsewhere
      all pure assembly only
      whilst parts can be outsourced affordably entirely to China

      @overseeingeye👈not exactly.
      American and European public don't shoulder additional cost.
      Their mfg businesses on low-value products (old-fashioned basic mechanical locks are only needed in places where rigged scarcity, theft, and impoverishment are the norm)
      such locks are unnecessary in places where optimized abundance (no waste), means no theft occurs, and safe/security with prosperity is the norm
      individuality is preserved in that everyone enjoys security from deceptive outside impersonation (old-style mechanical locks aren't needed; except to guard against inadvertent breakage of a safebox/shed/room from the elements: weather, fire, flood, etc)
      like in China.
      China's is very much THE "world's factory" (they mastered mfg everything, safely, and affordably, and eliminate hazards and complicated mfg processes by optimized mechanization and automation
      the highest quality sophisticated parts, too
      all come from China
      even for high end "assembled" products in Europe/America/Japan/SKorea, the HIGH END PARTS are made in China
      including worldclass OEM parts (intended for maintenance/repair in major collisions, or other damage)
      30+ years ago European+American Auto manufacturers discovered China's OEM Spare parts "copies" were SO GOOD they matched and often EXCEEDED OEM Specifications CAME from CHINA, for a FRACTION of making them locally or in a neighbor!
      They realized they WANTED to seek these Chinese "copy" manufacturers to mfr for them instead! (not punish them!)
      This is why China was destined to make EVERYTHING (even the best things, for less) for EVERYONE!
      only cheapskate businesses would ask China to make something for next to nothing; but China's mfrs are very flexible to make whatever buyers/vendors/mfrs think they can sell to their market (to cheat the public; is on their heads, NOT on China's head)!

    Simple answer, the tax break to be a front expired and it’s back to basic “outsourcing jobs.” Cooperation a main reason for the weakening and lost of production work made I. America. They encourage us go to school get a diploma for these jobs. By getting the diploma we will get a higher pay but cooperate would rather send the job overseas which pays much less for workers. These cooperate companies also have stakes in the local colleges also😂
