  • Last December, I stumbled upon a Craigslist post for a Powermatic Planer for CHEAP-ish, yet expensive for being completely rusted out. The seller was located just a few hours away-- a drive I was willing to make for a tool I knew would be worth the investment. The seller gave us the full address the day before the trip. Joke's on us because the address was located two hours further away on the border between Arkansas and Missouri. Still worth it. Once my Dad and I arrived, the seller walked us to an open air barn and presented to us a Model 100 Powermatic Planer full of rust, yet still capable of milling a board. We claimed it ours and made the trip home where I spent the next two months restoring the planer, affectionately named VASH, to its former glory.

I am a shop teacher that has used that model 100 for 24 years. It has been around for a lot longer (1966). You won't be disappointed by it. Nothing is made today of that quality. Nice work.

Ahhh the 1960s, when dust collection wasn’t a thing… sweet restoration.

lol, yeah! I have added a dust collection onto it. It actually doesnt work well without dust collection. The woodchips get on the rollers and dent the wood.

You did a nice job on rebuilding your planer. I've got the Powermatic 16" that's going to have to rebuilt. One of the raising screws is worn to the point that one side of the bed won't hold after adjustment. Luckly Powermantic still has thoes parts. Well all but one of the flang adjusting nuts and I can get that machined.

Lol. Great job my friend. I have used a lot of different thickness planets over the years but never a powermatic. I did work with a guy that swore by the powermatic 14" which I think that it is. He said it always fed easily, accurate and reliable . That's as good a recommendation as you could ask for. You did a great job on that restoration and it's a great feeling getting it going Eh ?
    Nice find. Well done.

Yep its a great tool, its actually only 12" though. those extra 2 inches would be rad.

12 is plenty most of the time. I've worked in many woodshops where we preferred using the small planer. They don't tend to snipe as much and give a better finish.

Excellent job, a little surprised you didn’t grease it before you fired it up but all’s well that ends well.

I did grease it during assembly; just not moly grease, but yea not a enough mechanical experience.

That looks great! I have the same planer. What brand/color of paint did you use? It looks like a perfect match.

Did you ever think to replace those bearings? I’m sure that would stop the squealing.

Good job on the restoration. I have done a couple of restorations already for my woodshop and a powermatic planer is on my list next to find and redo.
While I don't disagree with your uncle about the brake fluid, everything should/would have been cleaned and re cleaned before paint applied so it should t have mattered what you used to remove the old paint.
Only criticism I have is I would have taken the time to remove the old badges. You took a lot of time to redo everything else a little extra time wouldn't have mattered. I know I would have missed a spot and it would drive me nuts. 🤣.
I've only sprayed the pieces I've redone. How did the brush look after it was all done?

I was afraid, that I'd do a poor job of putting them back on.

Good Gracious he painted the casters. looks good though. A friend of mine has one for sale almost identical to yours. Probably just as rusty. How much did you buy it for and how much did you sell it for?
