Ok wow! I have used split mandrels for several years but I’ve just fed in the edge of the sandpaper. Your technique in essence creates a flap wheel that is way more efficient and doesn’t wear down the sandpaper on just the one edge as fast! Brilliant! Thanks!
Hi Megan, I'm so glad that you like the videos. And, I'm happy that they are a good supplement to what you are learning in your class. Thanks for your support! : )
this is great John! I usually cut the stripe of sanding paper, roll it on top of a non split mandrel using tape, to sand the inner part of my pieces, but your method looks easier and more practical. I'll try it! thanks for the tip.
I've never folded my sand paper. I just roll it up tight and sand and then just cut the edge every once in a while as it is ragged. I'll have to try this way and see which I like best. Thanks. I even made one out of a dowel rod wood piece while I was waiting for my metal mandrel to be delivered after I saw it in use many years ago.
I came here after seeing a split mandrel in a jewelry and metal crafts book. Sometimes books leave me hanging and I need a live demo. This seems straight forward so I’ll have to order the mandrels and give it a go. I’m interested in using plexiglass in my metal creations and I could use this all the way to 2000 grit wet/dry as a pre work for polishing plastics and metals too!
Yes, this will be a useful tool for you with the plexiglass. There are various ways to thread the split mandrel. You might want to investigate that. And, purchasing sandpaper tape will save lots of time. Good luck with your projects. And, thanks for watching! 😀
Thanks John. I have the tapered and straight versions of this bit and I didn't know how to use them well. I would just slot a strip into the mandrel and it would usually come loose.
WE THANK YOU...I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE SPLIT MANDREL EXISTANCE AND ITS PERFECT CAUSE IM FED UP WITH ALL THESE EXPENSIVE SANDING BARRELS THAT FIT ON THE DRUM AND EVERY TIME THEY SLIP OFF AND FALL!!..WITH THIS YOU CAN EASILY USE CHEAP ORDINARY SAND PAPER THAT GOES EASILY UP TO 2000GRIT AND MORE...I WISH YOU NEW GOOD YEAR..!!!
Oh, thank goodness for this video! I have bought some split mandrels and you should have seen the pig's ear I made of my first attempt! The sandpaper shot all over the room like a hand grenade . . . I was wearing eye protection, Prof, Ahr :-)
Hi Hilary, I'm glad that you found the video helpful. And, thank goodness you've made wearing your eye protection a habit. Thanks for your support! : )
Glad you liked the video. The biggest plus to the slotted mandrel is that you can use any grit of sandpaper that suits your needs. You can also wind your sandpaper around the slotted mandrel to make your own sanding "drum". Just tear off the worn sandpaper as you go. Hope that helps. Thanks for your support! : )
I tried to make one the same. Unfortunately it is not a good thing. The strip of paper or abrasive cloth flickers and works very badly. Not having the lathe, I lost a morning to do it and I'm not satisfied at all.
You might try securing a length of sandpaper to a mandrel and winding the sandpaper around it. Just make sure that you wind the sandpaper in the right direction. Otherwise, it will quickly unwind as soon as you press the pedal to your flexible shaft. As the sandpaper wears out, simply tear off the worn piece to expose a new sanding surface. I hope that helps. : )
I really liked the sound snippet leading intro to your video, with the summersaulting logo!! I was looking for examples of stretching the opening of a motorcycle exhaust pipe, but forget the bike, I think I’m gonna bust out my lapis lazuli and enamels, and tool up some leather accessories. Thank you for sharing!!
I appreciate this video. Haven't used mine in so long I loaded it wrong and the sandpaper flew out. I remembered it had to be folded when you cut the piece. Thanks!
Hi Marianne, Glad you enjoyed the video. Some folks wrap the sand paper around the mandrel. That method works well too. But, this approach definitely helps to keep your sanding from being too aggressive. Thanks for your support! : )

Hi, thanks for the video. Very clear. I wonder what is the plus and minus compared to the sanding drum bit? Thanks
