Top video. I remember that petrol station on Mersea Rd at 5.13, me old man used to always stop there when i was a boy. Amzing how quite it is on a Sunday...can't move for trafiic and people now. Wierd not seeing the police station on Southway too!!. Thanks for sharing, really brings back the memories!
You drove right past my old house (197 Mersea Road, next to Blackheath garage), jeez this brings back memories. My best friend Paul Jones lived in Abberton, I used to cycle to his house from mine a lot, never dawned on me then how far it was. I'm going back to Colchester soon for a nostalgia trip, haven't been back since 1987 when I left there.
Boy are you going to notice the difference and not for the better in my opinion. The population has doubled in that time. It would be interesting to hear your comments after your visit, feel free to air them on here.
One of my student digs was in Mersea Rd, near St Botolphs Station, as it was called in 1986. (No one asked me if they could change the name to the bland Colchester Town!) Anyway there was a chippy under our flat, and the old lady Ruby who worked in there was lovely. She used to put extra chips in for me, and I once went down to the roundabout and picked flowers for her! Such lovely times, although my landlord and lady at Mersea Rd threw me out when they realised I was gay, and conducting an “immoral relationship” with my boyfriend of the time!
@jacobsdaduk I think the main difference is the lack of clutter and traffic.In 1986 the population was about 86000 now it is over 186000 and expected to rise to 207000 by 2012! When I was born in 1950 it was about 56000.No wonder you cant move now.
I live on King Harold Road and it's crazy to see that the people on the corner of Scythe Way still seem to had that boat all those years ago. Shame you didn't drive a bit further down past Prettygate Road and past my house. :)

I had to remove the sound on that video because when I recorded these videos they were never intended for public consumption and some of the comments were of a personal nature to various people so I thought it best to put the music on.
Yeah, the Murco's vanished now and the site's all covered in flats. I was born on Rudsdale Way and used to walk to and from school along this stretch (recognised the folley at 12:56). Also I was living in Queensland Drive in 1986 so recognise the bit around 5:30 in particular. Thanks TheWurn2 for taking me back in space and time.

Love the fact that there are no mini roundabouts. Just good old junctions..

this shows how sundays should be...opening hours in retail shops on sundays spoilt this
it was great to see the group of runners, doing the same routes that i do with the colchester harriers now.

I did indeed! 1966-1972, I was one of the first to go there in the days of Mrs Hayes.
