I am graduating this semester as well! And I have the same passion towards anthropology. I am currently up doing an assignment so I found your channel while taking a break haha. Subscribed! I read your bio too so I also have something to say.
Do not regret your major. I find it amazing that you chose this major and it makes you much more awesome. For example, it is hard to find people who are knowledgeable in biological anthropology or human history/prehistory and evolution and be able to discuss primate history. Most people in my circle do not know the evolution of humans and the primate taxonomy and so topics like archaeology and evolution will always seem like a mystery to them. But as an anthropologist you were able to learn about primate evolution and the various cultures, artifacts, fossil remains, tool technology, socio-political structures, etc. that existed throughout history. You were able to learn about many examples of fossil remains (i.e., Ötzi the Iceman, Kenewick Man, Lucy, etc.), many heritage sites around the world as well as many cultures that lived in those sites (i.e., Mississippian Culture, Hopewell Culture, various other Native American groups, Ancient Egyptian Empire, Machu Picchu, and the list goes on). I believe you hold a lot of useful knowledge that you could use very creatively with advanced study (like a Master's degree) or carry out an independent project/initiative within the field. You are very bright and intelligent person, and your major stands out from the rest. Don't ever feel regretful because you know you love what you learned in this major.
If I selected UCLA during my admissions I would have probably seen you in anthropology classes. As you said, the department is still growing, so everyone sort of knows everybody. Unfortunately, this is my first semester in-person and my last semester before graduation, so I did not get the full college experience or get to meet much people. I am a double major in anthropology and geography so we dealt with mapping/surveying/GIS etc. in geography and I think it will be helpful for anthropology. I never heard of taking coding courses but I believe that would be helpful for a job in linguistics, forensics, or archaeology.
Just like many majors, you cannot do much with just a bachelor's degree, but you can also gain a lot of experience for advanced job positions. I believe that searching for an advanced study program is necessary. And investing (in securities, real estate, ETFs, etc.) is a good way of keeping your money on the move. You seem very smart.
I want to highlight a few things you can get with anthropology whether it is now or with advanced study. But keep in mind, most jobs you find would be faculty positions, unless you do specified searches. I took a variety of courses in anthropology, and among my favorite are primatology (comparative primatology), human evolutionary biology, biological anthropology, medical anthropology, forensic anthropology, archaeological research, archaeology and prehistory, North American archaeology, ethnography, and other courses related to culture, social, linguistic, or business anthropology. But I liked biological anthropology the most.
    A. With a bachelor's degree, you can qualify for a position as an archaeological field technician, human resources manager, curatorial assistant or archivist at a museum, a writer (in anthropology, primatology, or archaeology; if you find a paid position), a public relations specialist, a survey researcher, and more. These are realistic jobs you can get with just a bachelor's degree, and I found several listings. I can also share more information regarding specific job openings and suggest even more jobs.
    B. With an advanced study program, you have the ability to choose what you want to specialize in. I have a feeling that you like biological anthropology the most. But correct me if I am wrong. You can find a graduate program (MA, MS, or PhD) in the following: Anthropology, Archaeology, Primatology, Paleoanthropology, Paleopathology, Human Evolutionary Biology, Forensic Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, ethnography, and more. You can also work in CRM, ethnography, public relations, and so on, but I am not sure these jobs may be appealing to you.
**Look at the below list of professions, and let me know if any of them sound exciting to you:**
-- Archaeologist: Excavate sites, analyze artifacts, etc.
-- Primatologist: Do research on primates (you choose a primate species such as bonobos, lemurs, etc.).
-- Paleoanthropologist: Look at fossil and archaeological records.
-- Paleopathologist: Deal with pathological conditions (diseases, etc.) in fossil remains.
-- Forensic Anthropologist: Conduct research on primates and it involves field research, biology, and a lot of fun activities. You can even work in the crime sector too.
-- Anthropology Professor: You only need a master's to become a professor, and a lot of universities pay very well. For example, my mother is a math professor, and the teaching position pays very well.
**All of these jobs above only require a minimum of a master's degree and there are so many 1 to 1.5 year master programs you can look into. I can share more information related to that too. You can also create a research and have it funded. You can create initiatives or fundraisers or projects related to anthropology.
    Alternatives:
You can also qualify for jobs outside of anthropology with an anthropology major. For example, museum curation professionals are usually art or history majors. You can get into real estate and become a home inspector or appraiser (and the average pay is very good, like 60-70k in California) and that is just the average. Being a real estate agent or broker is easy too but you should look into real estate development (buy and sell homes, flip homes, renovate homes), or getting your appraiser or home inspector license. You need 3 courses and to take an exam for licensure. I am familiar with all of it if you are interested.
Another alternative (out of many I can think of) is to be a habitat specialist (similar to a zoologist) and you only need a bachelors in biology, anthropology, or other related field. And the duties are very fun too, so nothing too complicating. Plus, you can choose to work with a primate species and their habitat as opposed to another animal.
Taking all that information above, the question is: What are your objectives and career goals/interests? To find that out, you should do thorough research on various study programs and career options so that you can get yourself familiar with everything and determine what best suits you.
I have to resume work on my assignment now. However, I am glad I came across your channel. You seem like a very smart and bright person and your major is nothing short of great. I wish I met someone as remarkable as you in my department because we would have definitely been great friends. If you ever want to connect about anthro (careers, programs) or anything else I can send you an email and we can set up a Zoom meeting, or connect on social media. Have a good day!

I am at the end of my freshman year at UNC Charlotte and it turns out I accidentally did like half of these but I also did have a breakdown over what skills I should have 😎 I really enjoy this major and it’s definitely something I am sticking with due to both personal interest and also a somewhat of an idea of what I’m doing in the future, but overall I really liked your tips. I will definitely look into real-world courses because I lack a lot of those things

How awesome that you already did some of these without trying, that's wild! And dude I feel you-so many skills to learn and so little time. The best we can do is try our best (at least that's what I tell myself haha). So glad some of the tips were new and helpful. Good luck at UNC Charlotte!

Im a similar situation to you, looking at bio anth and archeology positions online and realizing man, that cultural anthropology upper division I required to take means nothing in the real world with all these hard skills companies are rightfully looking for. Most of the time I see the required skills and can't even be mad when the want field school experience, survey, or GIS because those are very useful, I just for any number of reasons dont have those skills. Great video best of luck, we got this!

Yes, these are all excellent points! It really is such a challenge so hopefully people can learn from our experiences haha. And yes, we got this!!

Re: your coding recommendation, I've been told the same about learning GIS. This is specifically related to environmental anthropology, but it was a great suggestion. I love the idea of diversifying your interests, it'd be nice to have a doc of suggestions for each subfield, a lot of us don't realize how many options there are within the field.

As an Anthropology / Social Science graduate, I went back to Community College and got a certificate in Real Estate. Took the local County Government test for Appraiser. Retired 20 years later with a great retirement.

Frankly, I also thought that the people at UCLA were much less classist than at UW - Madison. I had already taken calculus and biology at the college level before going to college. I also tried learning some coding after I graduated.

Did you have to take chemistry for the evolutionary biology minor? I even remember attending a meeting about students who were interested in medicine my few weeks on campus.

    • @AliviaBrown
      @AliviaBrown  2 роки тому

You actually do not! Because there is a lot of ground to cover in a short amount of classes, they do not require any chemistry courses

The four tips she talks about:
    1) Take a coding class
    2) Engage with more subsets of anthropology besides research, in other words, explore different fields within anthro (work in a museum, work in a field school, go to a research lab, etc.)
    3) Take more “real-world” courses like finance, business, investing, and classes about life skills that everyone needs to survive in the adult world
    4) Look at job listing early (like freshman year, but as early as possible) so you know what skills you’re actually going to need to get a job
