I'm 38 years old and I used to travel to school in a Leyland Leopard and I always heard that buzzing sound, I love these old coaches, they bring back memories for me.
I am of similar age and always loved to go to the bus station and be first on the bus for the cold start and then the driver revved the engine to get the air up before we could move. The buzzer sounding the whole time. Took considerably longer to get the heat up inside the bus.
They buzzed for bloomin everything haha. It’s a very familiar sound. You could tell it was low on water if u cornered and it ‘sloshed’ and went low. Overheating in summer was a common occurrence
My brother served his apprenticeship as a fitter and turner at Leland Motors in Leyland (Bus and Truck Division) in the mid 70s. He’s an engineering PhD now, I wish I could say Leyland Motors had also advanced.
I remember driving a. Royal tiger full executive .with A rear engine ,manual gearbox all cable linkage. Gears nightmare until Engine & gear box warmed up , the air accelerator took a lot of getting use to on long motorway journeys a great coach to drive.
It's a testament to Van Hool's quality that Leyland chose them to equip their demo vehicle. It's sad to see such a reputable manufacturer disappear from the market.
The good old days of 70 mph in the fast lane!

You should be able to do 70 in the ‘driving lane’! The ‘fast lane’ does not exist, it is an ‘overtaking lane’ for overtaking only.

@@garyhardwick8489 yep! Can’t get anywhere on the motorways nowadays for idiots in SUV’s who hog overtaking lanes and brake for no reason, and then do tailgating on people who actually are overtaking.
Yep now it’s only 62 mph and often minibuses can only do 60. Luckily trains are not restricted.

great video, but i like the leyland tigers i remember as a child. with 4 spoke steering wheel and square clocks on the instrument panel, manual gear change.with 0350 and 0600 diesel engine,great sounds,and a great bus company Southdown Motors.memories from 1964.
Portsmouth to Stafford for a long weekend from the RN the Leyland's were always the most comfortable.
Lovely vehicle We had two tl11s in Colombo Sri Lanka operated by Ceylon Transport Board.
Body built by Unicar Spain and with hydrocyclic gear box
Both were scrapped.
One is still lying in derelict state and there was a talk to say that it's going to preseved.
Two registration numbers are 30-7501,30- 7502
I used to drive Leyland Tiger buses and coaches. I prefer the Leopard, but the early Tiger I drove, a Plaxton Supreme 6 was far better to drive than the later Duple 320. The early Tiger was an X reg and the later was a D reg. They were both 6 speed ZF gearboxes. The Duple was a cable change and jumped out of 1st and crunched into 3rd!
The air throttle could freeze in extreme conditions.
They took more skill to drive compared to the modern VDL Bovas that I drive nowadays.

Leyland is still running stronger in India and 110kmph is nothing for leyland
i drove (tigers and leopards) in australia about 15 yrs ago tigers were one of the best busses i drove while not as powerful as some of the newer busses they just felt good to drive and were well thought out in their design the only busses of similar age that were as good were the 0405 mercs and the dennings depending what work was being done
In SA in the 90s Leyland Coaches aka AAD were fitted with ADE 447turbo engines (290hp)..
They had an early form of antilock braking then, which was quite advanced
Abs had become fairly well established amongst most car manufacturers by 1986 (this video was made in 86 or 87), so they're just about keeping up rather than being advanced...

@@pinkyn0se only on luxury models. It wasn't until the mid 2000s that the majority of cars had ABS fitted.

On topic: What happened if you switched off the engine (or it dies for some reason) while it was still in gear with the semi-auto? I would assume it loses air/oil pressure and drops out of gear.
like a manual with the pneumocyclic (air operated) never drove a hydrocyclic. all had manual stopper to shut engine down so could not accidentally shut engine off but it would be like taking your foot off the throttle till it stopped.
in the ate 70ts i owned layland octopus t l11 engine and 9 speed manual box it was second 8w the first was a foden 180 gardner so i thought it was a much better truck to drive with more power
but the engine was unreliable

Replace the engine and gearbox with a Cummins/Gardner engine and ZF/Voith gearbox would solve many problems.
The TL11 was a good motor it went on to be the 11.6 litre Daf engine in the 2800,3300,3600 and later the Daf 85/95 series
Even better, a volvo b10m engine
They did offer that, in later models. Cummins L10/ZF automatic, gave excellent performance. But the TL11 was an excellent engine too, though perhaps happier in coach than bus work

Talking of a dangerous position, it looks as though someone's been using that bit of road at 15:45 for some emergency braking practice judging from the skid marks 🤔
Flensburg Way in - you guessed it - Leyland, about a mile from the old Leyland factory.
I reckon they had to do a few takes with the bus doing emergency braking within camera shot and the driver over-cooked it on a couple of takes.
If the engine cranks but will not start, check the stop valve. Good advice but how about first checking to see if there’s any fuel in the tank?
Why does the bus in de Video have a VanHool Logo and not a Layland logo?
Leyland is the chassis, van hool is the body!

Coach is on a C registration, so was new between 1st August 1985 and 31st July 1986

Great coach had them on Alder Valley London link very comfortable to drive

Had issues with head gaskets and oil leaks, but a very good product from Leyland.
