US: Opioids Crackdown Leaves Pain Patients Suffering

  • Federal and state government efforts to reduce prescription opioids are inadvertently harming chronic pain patients. Many patients are involuntarily cut off medications that improve their lives or say they are unable to find a doctor willing to care for them.
In the last decade, hundreds of thousands of Americans died of drug overdoses each year. By some estimates, nearly half of these deaths have involved prescription opioids. To stem this crisis, government authorities have mounted aggressive attempts to reduce the use of these medicines. They have investigated physicians who prescribe them for no legitimate medical reason and increased monitoring of prescribing by physicians. Some state governments and Medicaid programs have imposed strict upward limits on the dosage physicians are allowed to prescribe.

Please try Kratom. It saved me. It’s way better than oxycodone for pain and depression and euphoria and it’s legal. It activates beta opioid receptors without causing negative side effects. It’s great for pain or anxiety or depression. It’s like having unlimited pain killers without side effects. Get the trainwreck strain from Yokratom it changed my life to be able to buy unlimited pain killers for a super cheap price. I hope it’s helped you. 5 million to 6 million take it daily in USA. It helped many women and many men that I know. Saved people from alcoholism because it gets rid of cravings for alcohol or other drugs. It’s so awesome and it’s more euphoric than oxycodone and methadone and suboxone and better for pain and literally is so awesome. Give it a try. I buy mine from yokratom.com great quality and cheapest price I can find for kilos.

@@GrandmasterUV I tried Kratom and it didn’t work for me, unfortunately. At my wits end and considering things I have never even dreamt I would have. I have cancer, facing surgery in a few days with zero pain management after. They told me the pain would be healing and to rub it and ice it. I shit you not. Considering calling the surgery off and just dying at this point because I don’t know if I will survive that added pain on top of what I already live with on the daily in kidney failure and such. How did we get here?!? My blood pressure is spiking and I keep telling them it is the pain and they ignore me. At every turn. Take Tylenol, they say. With kidney failure and liver disease. Fucking Tylenol. Ready to risk what’s on the streets. At least that way I know I can be out of pain one way or another. My poor family doesn’t deserve any of this.

@@GrandmasterUV it’s not legal in all 50 states and the MMe or minimum morphine equivalent is low. Besides that 7OH or 7-hydroxymitragynine is extremely toxic to the liver. Regular mitragynine is fine but products with 7OH removed are ten times as expensive as prescription opioids. As a kratom user myself I think it’s irresponsible to say that kratom will give the same level or better pain control because it simply will not.

Was on opiates for over a decade. I was able to even walk up to a kilometer in a good day.
My new doctor refuses to prescribe them. Now I can make it from my bed to my recliner, and that is about it. My ability to function has decreased greatly.
Our country is actively protecting the illegal opiate poppy fields in Afghanistan, while taking away pain meds from patients.
I can understand the fight against illegal drugs. However going after pain patients is driving a population to the black market for relief from pain.
    This is inhumane

I had Polio in September 1951 I was 6 months old both legs and my right arm was affected I wore braces for the first 15 years then surgeries then back and braces and 92 on both legs and crutches and a scooter. At some point I have a ruptured disc in my lower back but pain running down my left leg. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 I was stage 3A 5.2 CM tumor grade 3. I had a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. In 2009 I had three discs in my neck fused. For years I had arm and neck pain. I used to sew for my grandkids, I used to paint and draw. I sold a painting online for $40 years ago. My arms are wore out from lifting my body 70 + years. I am not able to lift my arms higher than chest level. I can't pick up anything with my right arm without dropping it. I rarely cook as even the I have my scooter that has the power seat that lifts me high enough to cook but my right arm has been burnt a couple times due to not being able to hold it high enough to stir or turn over something. I mainly eat frozen tv dinners or sandwiches. My scooter is very old and torn but the scooters Medicare will pay for don't come with that option. If you need it, you have to pay $1,000 out of pocket.
I was diagnosed in 1986 with post polio Syndrome. I was having chronic pain in my arm muscles. I was falling and extremely tired. I was working in the Cardiac Cath Lab at the VAMC. Doctors at Uni varsity of Michigan had hoped they could keep me working for 5 to 10 more years but the pain got so bad along with extreme fatigue and had to retire in 1990. PPS causes patients to lose 10% of their muscle strength a year. While I was working full time, I was also taking classes at night at University of Michigan Dearborn. I had already dropped out in my junior year due to the pain and fatigue. I was working on my Bachelor degree and Secondary teaching permit.
Doctors kept me on pain meds to keep the pain down so I could work. My arm muscles would ache constantly because I had to use them my entire life to lift myself as I didn't have the strength in my legs. After I retired my income was cut in half when I went on disability. I babysat more children than I can remember, I rent a room out for years.
I was divorced with two daughters and a house payment. I didnt go to college until my daughters were old enough to stay home alone. The arm pain isn't near as bad as the back pain. If I'm awake, I'm in extreme pain. As I've aged and have lost so much muscle strength, the pain in my upper arms arent as bad now because I'm not able to sit up very long as not being able to get up and down, I pretty much live in my bedroom.
My doctor has taken away most of my pain meds and even what theh were giving me still wasn't allowing me to function. I still have to take Advil and extra strength Tylenol several times a day.
I have been on pain medication since I was working but as the pain would worsen I'd would beg the doctors to strengthen the meds or prescribe something else that it was not keeping the pain down. Since the cancer in 2007, I was diagnosed with cancer in the remaining breast.
I had had all I could take. After several leg surgeries from polio, the ruptured disc, the arm and neck pain knowing the doctors wouldn't treat the pain, I declined treatment. I wanted it to run its course and relieve me of constantly begging the doctors to help me. I just to this day have no desire to continue living in bed. I have 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. I used to have them over, stay the night riding them on my scooter to the park. I've not been able to due that for several years as the sidewalk cracks cause my back UNBEARABLE pain.
Now that they have reduced the psin meds I was relying on to live a life halfway normal, visit with my family. I think of suicide ide every single day.
I'VE NEVER abused my pain meds. Ice signed the drug affidavit, I've told them many times come to my home ANY TIME DAY OR NIGHT for urine or blood. Nothing I say does anything. They treat me like a drug addict. I truly dont know how much longer i can continue. This is not life. This sleeping (i put myself to sleep when i can't take the pain) has gotten to the point my dreams are my
social life then I wake up take anti depressants.

All of these opiate related deaths were mostly illicitly obtained Fentanyl -- dirt cheap in replacement of heroin and stronger, as well.
It's amazing to watch some of these documentaries (Kensington, Philly is one of MANY) about addicts shooting up in broad daylight, cops riding by occasionally to ticket someone who didn't have their seatbelt on over their shoulder, properly. It's like we're living in the Twilight Zone.

I guess I was lucky? My doctor stopped prescribing due to being threatened for to long. After 14 years of being on Norco everyday he took me off using the proper method with Suboxone. I only needed it for 5 days. It has been about a year and I've never craved the medication. But now my life is lost. On the Norco I started a business. I have been so proud because I started it with 20.00 and it grew fast. I could drive again and even work out. I was eating and sleeping. Now I have no idea who I am. Every doctor tried to put me on anti depressants. But I am not depressed. I think for what happened to me sadness and anger are normal emotions. I fear diabetes. It runs in my family. I am almost always sedentary now and gaining weight, Very different than when I was a body builder and trainer. I gave up driving. I sleep very little and eat very poorly. I can't eat in pain. Now I'm dealing with PTSD from doctors. I had one doctor scream at me. He didn't even bring my file into the room. He didn't even know my name. He called me desperate and an addict and said he was cutting my meds to less than half per day. It was horrible. The staff let me leave to drive home- even though I was having a panic attack and an SVT. My only thought was "I'm losing my business, my livlihood". The next doctor demanded an MRI of my back. I explained that I did not want an epidermal (they are not FDA approved). My back isn't even my worst pain issue. He yelled at me on the phone and hung up. Then a female doctor put me on several anti depressants at one time. I ended up in the ER with serotonin syndrome. So, I have serious white coat issues. I'm am slowly losing my business. I'm trying and don't want to give up. I understand why people are committing suicide. It's not like retiring. You aren't prepared. In a week your life just changes. It's gone. I always tell ppl' that are not in pain...have someone tap on your forehead for a month straight. While you try to eat, sleep, talk on the phone or make big decisions. See how well you concentrate after a month. It's not just the sensation of pain, but it brings madness to your life. I spend much time watching t.v..trying to just focus on the t.v to try to drown out the pain. I can't even read well now. My concentration is poor at best. I am so terrified of doctors that I broke my nose several months ago and fixed it myself. Last month I dislocated my shoulder and again fixed it myself. I respected the medication I was on. I was so thankful. After years of all kinds of therapies, medications that did not work and I was even scammed into trying things like body magnets, copper bracelets, infrared therapy, acupuncture several times and more. I'm not ready to just be a meat suit sitting on the sofa, with a brain that wants to do so much in life. I have another grandchild coming, number 5. And all I can think is 'another grandchild I can't play with or babysit. "They" never made a follow through for us. Once this started there was all kinds of things to help addicts. But we are left chronic pain criminals. Sadly this issue is having a snowball effect. People don't trust doctors anymore. I even know a group of women that are doing home births with no medical help. This is infecting everything. It has not slowed down drug abuse and suicides have increased. I can't believe my countries medical system is doing this to us.

I have chronic pain due to degenerative disk disease and bad knees and
have been seeing pain management doctors for excellent treatments and
medication since 1994, and the older I get, the worse my back and knees
becomes with age. Back in those days, they were not under the gun by the
DEA and CDC like it is now. I started noticing the changes after 2010
when it comes to doctors prescribing pain medications. One quit due to
the harassment of the DEA and was fed up, and now my most current pain
management doctor said he is quitting too for the same reason, even
though they are not doing anything illegal. To the DEA, we are all bad
people and need to watched. It is sad. I don't know what I will do if I
can no longer get the treatments I have been getting all those years and
was grateful for those treatments and pain medication that get me
through each day. I always dreaded the day may come when I no longer can
see a good pain management doctor. They are becoming fewer and fewer
due to the governments harassment of them and new doctors don't want
that hassle either, so they are not going into the pain management
field. If anyone gets "Consumers Reports", they are on the anti-pain
killer band wagon, and have been for years.. The June 2019 issue was on
chronic pain and they recommend "Mindfulness" (whatever the heck that
means), do yoga, get better sleep, or see a therapist". You gotta to be
fricken kidding me! Get better sleep to help rid of the pain? Right, I
am in agony and expect to get better sleep? Yoga? I can hardly bend my
knees. And for "Mindfulness, right!I i got a "mindful" dealing with my
pain! And therapists? They are absolutely useless for chronic pain
sufferers. I saw a therapist before I was recommended to a pain
management doctor by my first back doctor. Those "Therapists" are almost
an insult with their recommendations in dealing with pain. "Go do what
you enjoy to ignore the pain!" It is the "pain" that prevents me, and I
am sure of other pain sufferers from "enjoying" things in live. Unreal.

Force our DEA to stop threatening our doctors because that's the reason for the tapering and cutting off of patients who need these medications. Just as this patient in the video feels her life doesn't matter, so do many hundreds of thousands of other patients unable to get the medication they need. This is wrong. Legislatures also need to stop trying to force laws the limit a doctor's ability to prescribe.

The number of prescriptions for pain medicines have been declining since 2012 due to all these government regulations but overdose deaths continue higher BECAUSE they are solving the 1% part of the problem and are unable to make a dent in illegal drugs and may in fact be contributing to the problem and making it worse by taking away pain medicines.

Kim Miller hey! Nice to meet you! That’s what I’m doing, while my husband just got done golfing and is now at a baseball game. I’m trying to get in the shower. Going in the drawer for a clean pair of pj’s, led to me cleaning out the drawer for stuff to go to the goodwill. So, now I’m back on an ice pack waiting for the pain to subside so I can get in the shower, which I haven’t taken for a week. If I’m lucky enough to get that done, I might be able to put clean sheets on in a little while. Doesn’t matter tho, I’ll probably be up all night anyway, so even if I have to wait till 2-3am to get it done, that’s a victory for me! If not, my husband will do it for me tomorrow, but I really hate getting back to bed with a clean body and dirty sheets on.
It’s beautiful outside, 60 degrees in Wisconsin is great, even my two cats were laying in the sun in front of the open patio doors.
Even my neighbor asked my husband the other day if I was all right, and if I was still living here, she hasn’t seen me in so long. He said, yeah, she’s right in there, pointing to the bedroom window, lol, 🤣
      Ahhhhh......life is good, isn’t it?!?!?!
Do you by chance know anyone that could come to my house and cut my hair? It’s been 2.5 years since I had one, and those DIY UA-cam videos aren’t doing much for me anymore.
      Hang in there!!

I'm dealing with this issue right now. The reason I function as well as I do is because of the maintenance medications I'm on one of them being Tramadol (a low-risk narcotic). I am on my last prescription of this now and am due to run out in about 2 weeks. They are relegating people to a life of suffering. dehumanization, and degradation and nobody who legitimately needs these medications deserves to be treated like a criminal at one of those pain clinics. Pain is a symptom of many diseases. It should be viewed as no different from any other symptom and the medications for it viewed no differently from insulin for diabetes.

I have spent last 30 years in severe pain. Was referred to a pain management clinic. They prescribed 15mg morphine sulfate twice a day. I was able to function with a lowered pain. I made 6 moves with my husband as well. Each new doctor continued the morphine for the next 16 years. Not ONCE did I ask for a higher dose! Not ONCE did I take an extra pill!! I didn’t think “ oh my, when will it be time to take another?” When I went to Kaiser in Northern California, they talked me into giving it up. I had NO idea how much the morphine had helped. The withdrawal was terrifying! 8 straight days without a minutes sleep. Then horrifying hallucinations! I was too afraid to walk into my bedroom! Well it’s been 7 years now. I kept the 9 pills left from my last prescription. I have saved them for emergency trips that I have had to make. I still have 2 left. Do I sound like an addict? I cry daily! I writhe and tremble with pain. I am completely suicidal and have fought desperately to not kill myself for the sake of my family. I think about how, when and where to do it. My biggest fear is failure and ending up more damaged and in a mental ward. I think of everyone else who is suffering!! I cry for you too. Even more than for myself. Trump started this meaning well but the person or persons who put this together made a murderous and cruel mistake. Also, I’ve never had alcohol, tobacco . Whew!!

A blanket policy to cut off these patients is so fundamentally wrong and ignorant. Who will speak for these people? We begin perhaps with SCI(spinal chord injury) but a decade later, the body has sustained more complications.Researchers learn more each year about the effects of pain. no matter how stoic the patient, pain patients need constant medical observation. I don't like the way many doctors and the medical community have been treating CPP. I was told by one nurse practitioner that 3 of my urine test showed positive for (1) Minute amounts of alcohol were found (I am allergic to alcohol) (2) I didn't take any tramadol for the whole month.(3) I didn't have any flaurazam in my system. She insisted that flurazepam was for anxiety and not sleep.Tramadol was once considered a non opiate and was changed to an opiate. She was always stating she was in fear of losing her licence when Tramadol became an opiate and me taking it with a benzodiazepine. I never saw the urine tests and she blacklisted me as a drug dealer and stated in my records that I yelled, screamed , slammed doors and threw a fit when cut off. Another nurse practitioner took me when my doctor retired without telling me and said that pain meds don't work and cut me off cold turkey and than lied about it when questioned. No investigation was done. My partner who isn't even a pain patient was cut off cold turkey by a false positive and accused of taking morphine and told that he was a drug addict and to check into rehab. He had a poppy muffin the night before. He was taking a benzo. If these doctors and nurse practitioners don't feel comfortable treating pain patients, why can't they just be honest about it instead of accusing people of being drug dealers, addicts, blacklisting them and ruining their reputations. This Is just plain evil.

Of course they later amended my record but those stats were already turned in. How many times do you think that's happened?

Sandy Juntunen it’s evil how they are torturing millions of good people that need access to their medication to improve quality of life to those suffering. They give way higher doses of opioids to addicts than legitimate pain patients that don’t abuse their medication at all and stick to their strict pain control regimen. It’s ridiculous and evil and it has to end. The DEA and CDC played huge parts in criminalizing doctors that prescribed medications legitimately with legit reasons for legit patients and millions suffered as a result. We need to spread the word and reform health treatment and work on making an amendment that gives us the right to self administer pain medication as needed to treat pain and they can’t incriminate is for doing so because persecuting is for doing so is a cruel and unusual punishment for someone that is seeking to remove severe suffering from severe pain that you people will not understand unless they are in that situation themselves.

The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. My pain clinic announced that they would have to cut every patients' dose to the 90mg morphine equivalent. My doctor also apologized for it, saying there was no medical reason for it. His group had a new administrator who insisted all the docs comply with the 90mg rule. My only option is to accept the loss of function or have a pain pump surgically installed, which I am not prepared to do at this time. Pain patients are being punished for the actions of others, which isn't right. It also doesn't appear to be working with 100,000 overdose deaths last year alone. They compounded a tragedy with another tragedy by making pain patients' lives even more miserable than they already were. It makes you wonder how many pain patients decided it wasn't worth living anymore when their meds were either slashed or in many cases discontinued. I suspect that number is high. Doctors should be making those decisions on a case-by-case basis. The way this was done is cruel and inhumane.

The former medical director of UW states that the medical community has to take some responsibility for putting patients on the drug round the clock and that many chronic pain patients will possibly be “dependent”on them for the rest of their lives. In my state they created a grandfathered approach for those in intractable pain with no cure who need to take them. They are already dependent on them. There is a different between dependent and addicted. Even terminal cancer patients are being denied their right for compassionate use. That’s tantamount to neglect and cruelty IMO. As an RN 30 plus years I can attest that many patients need the drugs to maintain functional capacity. Without that they tend to feel abandoned by the very medical community they put them on these in the first place and often become depressed and despondent. Statistics show less than 2% of patients will become addicted.

I've had over 28 injections and they hardly help, most doctors just acnor you or say we no longer prescribe. What can I true pain patient do ? We suffer because of misuse. I'm so sorry that there aren't more empathy out there .

People that are not in pain an don't have injuries don't care until it happens to them karma

Thank you. Yes, it is unfair to us with chronic pain.
We are the most controlled group of patients in the United States.
We are subject to a pain contract, and we get tested, pill counts, and now we are punished for a crime we did not commit.
We wake up every day and go to bed every day in pain. that's our normal now.
Nobody should have to exist that way because we are under medicated. We just exist.
We don't do the things we were able to do because we are in pain, and being in constant pain makes us tired.

I’ve got 4th stage cancer in the bones
Now I’m worried that my doctor will cut me back or cut me off completely
    The pain is unbearable
If this doesn’t kill me the cancer will eventually

      @@GrandmasterUV I’ve actually tried it
It doesn’t help the pain as much as the medication does
I do watch out on how many meds I take
There’s times where I don’t take my medication for hours trying to reduce taking too much medication
      Thank you for the suggestion

I'm in pain constantly from my back an legs, never had pain meds in my life an haven't been offered any! Now they're talking about surgery but that's the last thing I want with all the fuss over the pill thing cause if they're not giving me a anything now, there's no way in hell I'm going to let them cut on me. He's saying I'm not understanding his views but I'm understanding the crap afterwards that I would have to deal with an I refuse to go thru it period. What they need to do is get they're act together! He had the nerve refuse me Tylenol #1s, are u kidding me?!!
