IMO the closest I've seen in my lifetime to that kind of man post-Reagan (besides Bush Sr.) was probably Obama in his first term. If I had to wager I think he had like 90% of the country behind him, that 10% being just the birther racist nutbags. Then he made disappointment after disappointment and got just like 60% left by the time he was reelected.

In 1988 VP nominee castigated VP nominee Quaile (who referred to himself to JFK) saying "You are no Jack Kennedy.
Fast forward, and Bill Clinton was comparing himself to Thomas Jefferson. Reagan copied the earlier speech. "Governor Clinton, I knew Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson was a friend of mine. Governor, you are no Thomas Jefferson."

Two things. The Lockerbie bomb exploded early leaving wreckage (clues) on land. The investigation took 3 years. Reagan was long gone from office by then. Jan. 20 1989 was his last day in office. The bombing was Dec. 21 1988. Also winter solstice, the shortest day of the year.
Now a bit about "Star Wars" the derisive nickname the plan was given by Reagan's enemies. It was a giant effort at a defense against ICBM's. The program had many detractors. It was the butt of many a joke by those on the left in the US. Knowledgeable academics from leftist Ivy League campuses and the west coast universities railed against. Ironically the ONE group that believed it might be possible was the Russians. The mere possibility of its success worried them greatly causing them to double down on their own spending. Which they could not afford. It was a big part of breaking their financial system.

Five things that shocked me about Reagan which aren´t mentioned in this video: He shut many mental hospitals and put thousands of patients on the street, he said that communism is worth than nuclear war and he remarked in regard to environmental activists who advocated against deforestation "A tree is a tree. How many more do you need to look at?"
And then there was also his microphone joke and his "Ketchup is a vegetable." attitude concerning school lunch.
But he did also good things: Winning cold war, running massive nuclear disarmament (as mentioned in the video), calling for a chemical weapons ban and helping to ban ozone destroying chemicals.
And in addition I like his haircut and his dress style. (Especially in winter I myself like to combine a red pullover with a white shirt whose collar looks out of that of the pullover just as Reagan often was dressed in his spare time. I copied that look from the tv short series "The Reagans". And his haircut I also used to imitate.)

    • @Monster11B
      @Monster11B 4 роки тому +11

The closing of mental hospitals was due to the abuses through the three previous decades of the patients in them. Persons were committed for almost any reason. There was experimentation without consent. To include injections of plutonium. These abuses came out mid 1970s and needed addressing. Some were sponsored CIA programs. So it wasn't arbitrary to just close them down.
However, we are now dealing with a large homeless population of SMI individuals and families that have to exert excessively to support the rest. This burden should be re-shouldered by the government due to the burden that it is.

ya i enjoy this channel, but this post left out a LOT of ugly truths... Simon just wants to make his $ without offending anyone (ie conservative straight white dudes) going into the scandals, i get it, but honestly its kinda offensive to the rest of us to gloss over all the long term damage initiated by that administration & entire era.
I was just a baby, bit the more i learn about it as an adult, the more i can see its heinous effects on MY era. Especially The “war on drugs”s effect on the criminal justice system, weaponizing weed to disenfranchise POC & dem voters, screwing up mental health care for decades, screwing over countless veterans...
this republican ploy of hateful jingoism, performative patriotism & faux piety to turn voters against eachother over emotional misinformation, xenophobia & fear, instead of actual policy... well its no coincidence how much Trump took from Reagan. “Make America Great Again” was first uttered in the 80’s, laying the groundwork for our current disastrous “MAGA” era

Unemployment lines, crack cocaine, highest tax increase in history, illegal drug and gun smuggling, Star Wars defense system. Yeah, Ronnie Raygun made a mess of things. Loved his jellybeans and plausible deniability.

I remember learning about his passing as a small child and while I did not know much about him before that, I saw his weathered but sunny expression and felt a sadness after my mother explained what Alzheimer’s was like. I never knew about the disease and I couldn’t place why he seemed so important, so now I am glad that… I get it now. As a conservative, I can see how he was so influential… and as a scientist who is now interested in studying neuroscience… I can see how he is inspiring me even 15 years after his death.

@patrick howard Yeah, it's a constant surprise to many that it's the red states who rely most on the federal aid. Of course it's understandable, since their local taxes are often almost nonexistent. So naturally they have to get the money from somewhere, and who better to pay then their loyal blue state friends...

Well...he hated guns and the so-called Firearms Owners' Protection Act was ushered through during his administration leading the way for more gun control. So there's that. He kept big business from legally selling automatic firearms to the public instead of them making huge profits to pay taxes on.

Reagan was a remarkable speaker. He convinced the country that he, and actor who never saw enemy contact, was stronger on defense than a submarine commander who created Delta Force and the stealth bomber project. He convinced right wing Christians that he, a divorced man who helped pass a pro-abortion law, was more Christian than a Southern Baptist Sunday school teacher. He is seen as a law and order president even though he had more people in his administration indited or sent to jail than all presidents before him ...combined. He is known as strong against tyranny even though he paid a ransom to terrorists. He was a gun totin' cowboy to be reckoned with who ran out of Beirut as soon the shooting started. His economic policies caused a recession that cost George Bush his presidency. He is held up as a saint by modern conservatives, but his views and policies would be seen as too liberal to elected today.
Reagan gets credit for causing the downfall of the Soviet Union (which was predicted in President Nixon's book The Real War) even though he simply continued the policy of his predecessors. The Soviet Union was crumbling from the inside for years and nothing would have stopped its downfall. David Hasselhoff had more to do with the fall of the Berlin wall than did President Reagan. He was not the worst president we have ever had, but he was far from the best.

Correction: Ronald Regan graduated with a single major that was designated as Sociology and Economics.
There was a degree program at Eureka that offered that.
Most degree programs only offer a single field of study but this college offered a degree where economics and sociology were combined as a single major and degree.

    • @btetschner

I am mistaken about that as apparently colleges will have people do two degree programs and then only consider it a single degree.
      It is technically two degrees.

Yeah, the economy was booming in the 80s. For Big Business and people who already had money. If you were part of the underclass, it was a nightmare. Huge cuts to basic service programs like food stamps. I was a young mom, skipping meals so the kids had enough. I remember giving them lunch, listening to the Iran-Contra hearings on the radio, and I got so angry I threw a shoe and broke the radio. I have *zero* fond feelings for that smooth-talking horse thief and his administration.
