Actually a lot of Flaming Lips fans would appreciate contemporary classical music, they just need to be aware of it (I know it's generalizing a bit yes)
Listening to this while doing boring accounting stuff at work. Wow around the 2 hour mark the chaos turns pure beauty. This is why Steven Drozd is one of my favorite musicians of ever.
I saw this recommended to me and i kinda thought "heh, what if". Then an hour into it i thought "alright, ill listen abit more and then continue later on". Listened to the whole thing in one go, and I'm really surprised by how consistent this whole thing was quality wise. Last hour is great
The flaming Lips’s long stuff (this and 7 skies H3) is easily their best in my opinion (not because of the length itself but because none of the time is really wasted, and any hour you could pick out of it is better than any hour from their other albums for me)
@@purplelizard2348 it’s devastating, I’ve heard it in full beginning to end only once so far I believe, but I’ve heard the first hour or two like 50 times because it’s so beautiful
Phew. Done! Surprisingly great little tune with some incredible moments. 2:41:00 stands out. The ending was truly touching. The Lips really do love their fans. ❤️ Never gonna get the cute little vocal motif out of my head now, especially adorable knowing it came from Steven's 3 year old daughter. Gonna tackle the 24 hr song next!
The surprising thing is that's it's pretty listenable - it would be easy for them to cheat, but it's like six good drone-rock albums one after the other.
it says to share your thoughts... I was scared of the direction that "the terror" album took when it was released. I remember wayne saying something like, "all our albums had an optimism like love would conquer all and everything would be alright; "the terror" is waking up and having to deal with that love dead and gone and still having to go on..." ... and that scares me when so much of my being alright with life having to do with beautiful music; sometimes it's all there is it feels like.... I read someone say of the lips' philosophy of music "why have a cello and violin lightly come in and accompany the melody when you could make the whole damn thing sound like the wizard of oz..." lol, and that's what I had become comfortable with... When I hear the lips I think I hear in there a zest for life, sometimes even if its sad, a real love of life... the sad parts wouldn't be so beautiful if you still didn't love it, you know? You can hear it even in the sharp and obtrusive, yet masterful playing even in the first 30 minutes of this... if you're going to listen to this, I hope you're in a space to really get it... Shared my thoughts...
@@VolatilityDoctor funny enough around the 4 hr 20 min mark. Maybe a little earlier. The main melody comes in with these horns and its like going through a jungle to find an amcoent structure made of gold.
Wayne Coyne said this work isn't meant to be listened to intensively, but I tried it. After about three hours a close friend entered the room, and claimed she could hear the sound of bombs exploding in the music, which led fairly swiftly to it being turned off. Will try again at the next opportunity though. From what I have heard so far though, there are long periods of this music which are largely the same, and the most exciting parts are the transitions. It could be reworked as a great half hour piece or even a twelve minute track and actually gain a lot from that. Again, we are meant to be doing something exciting whilst we listen to it or listening to it in small segments, but what if we just want to listen? It's fairly meditative, I suppose.
It's very krautrock inspired, even though I think the whole thing is great, it definitely gets better as you move through it. It requires patience and you should be doing something else if ur not on drugs lol
***** She didn't like em dude, and she asked nicely, so off they went. Besides, it's barely worth the effort to travel back and turn them back on when you consider that there are many dimensions in which she liked the music and asked me to turn it up.
Well they turned 7 Skies H7 into a conventionally paced album and that was pretty damn good IMO. Still, I prefer the insanity of burying great stuff in a vast, borderline unlistenable forest of music. Listening to these two songs is like being an explorer and stumbling across some of the pulsing, swirling highpoints in this and 7 Skies is like discovering an uncharted landmass.
A few years ago I had this on a thumb drive and listened to it during my commute. Think it took almost 2 weeks to get through it all and wish I took notes on the parts that were great, because there were some amazing drone jams, but I don’t think I have the patience to mine through it again 😅
There's a 6 minutes-long dentist-drill noise at about 19:00 that made me feel slightly nauseous. This is not a criticism, just beware if you're listening on headphones. :)
Truely an interesting experience. People need to approach this without out a "ermagerd 6 hour song" mind set. This is more then a song, it's an experience. Anyway I'm beat so I'm taking my first break at the hour mark. I'd like to thank the flaming lips for being bold,
I slept with this playing a bit loud in my room. I woke up around at 4:57:00 being really scared of the vocals. Now that i am listening to it i cant understand why it scared me but being alseep i concieved this totally different. Saw weird dreams too.

This song is actually pretty cool sure it's really long and some parts go on forever and repetitive also some parts of this is just noise but there are also some very nice relaxing parts too especially the end

I am a huge Flaming Lips fan, but this really is unlistenable. it's the same thing over and over pretty much for 6 of the longest hours of of my entire life. they should just st to making regular albums. I own all over those, and everyone is good except for the terror album.
i dont get why they dont play this live
You ever tried to play a live show for 6 hours? lol
hippydippy led zeppelin used to play for 3-4 hours if people stayed and demanded encores.
I might know why lol
It makes the bouncers cry is why. they should read a book in the meantime.
one month later I'm wondering too. on the 3rd hear... haha
