I was a KFC manager back in 80’s, when stores were just switching to pre made jars of the dressing. So let me drop the two secrets the Colonel put into the slaw… Miracle Whip & Tarragon vinegar. Others have noted the lack of fresh chopped onions, not powder, in your recipe. We would mix it in the morning and package it the following day. Hope this adds to everyone’s coleslaw.
I made this yesterday morning and today I told my husband to taste it. Well, he ate half of it right then and there. So, yes, this is a great recipe! Thank you!!!!!!!!!
Your version is very similar to mine. I also use the store-bought pack of cabbage/carrot mixture. Instead of Apple Cider Vinegar, I use a splash of Zesty Italian Dressing. I also add sugar, salt, and pepper. Plus I add my secret (until now) ingredient: garlic powder. Everyone who has eaten my slaw has raved about it, saying it was the best coleslaw they've ever eaten. I never measure the garlic powder. I just sprinkle some across the top then stir it in. Then repeat 3 times. I'm definitely going to try your version, so that in case I like it and don't have all the ingredients to make my version, I can make yours. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
I made it just now and didnt have onion powder, so I added garlic powder hoping for the best Im glad I saw your comment. whew. Confident it will taste good
O.K. I made this yesterday, and I would say it is darned close! I do taste a bit of celery seed in KFC coleslaw, and I dissected some KFC coleslaw (not that I'm a fanatic or anything) and found that there is Diced Onion in it. So, I added 1/2 diced onion and 1/4 tsp. of celery seed, and WOW! So close, that you could not jam a playin' card between the recipes! Keep up the good work and I'll keep eating it.
Thank you for this recipe so quick and easy. I appreciate that you put the recipe so that we can see it without having to go to a website that was very considerate of you. I am going to try this today.
After watching this yesterday and loving how easy it was to make I tried the recipe out today, just using honey instead of sugar. It came out perfect was delicious and really was very easy to make it didn't even take much time at all . My family enjoyed it and they are calling for more. This is a must for coleslaw. Truly a great recipe. Thank you so very much once again.
love it. thanks so much. May you rest in peace, Sir and thank you for all the amazing recipes you left us. Though there are 100's of cooks/chefs on youtube, You are sorely missed. 🧡🧡🧡
Sorry to hear the gentleman passed! May he rest in peace. I did want to just say that I believe KFC uses buttermilk in their coleslaw…that’s why it doesn’t keep too long…aside from everyone gobbling it up.
I worked at KFC years ago, the marinade came Pre-made, so not sure if it’s accurate, but sounds about right. One final step: Let the marinade and cabbage mixture to set overnight, which is how we did it.
@@evanphilo5709 That sounds about right :-) I did not think that is made "fresh" in the restaurant! Surely with a little help out of the chemistry box...
@@rashedaturner8363 right, when I worked there t was in a big plastic jug. It was orange-ish then went white when all mized. Used a hobart mixer with attachement and added onion and carrots.
I had a neighbor who had three KFC's and, of course, she would never give the recipe to the cole slaw but she did say it had something you would never think of. I think that ingredient was horseradish sauce. Something which southeners did use but something us northerners did not. Most other ingredients the same as most cole slaw: chopped cabbage, onions, carrots. terragon vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper, oil. When sauce is mixed add in some horseradish sauce tsp to tbsp to taste. I think the little bite of that horseradish does the KFC trick. Even if not, this is a good additive anyway.
I love good coleslaw! 👍🏻 But, I discovered about five years ago that I absolutely LOVE adding 1 - 3 teaspoons of ACV (Braggs) to any coleslaw I make or buy. Also, it's VERY healthy for our gut. ✅
I used to work for an advertising supplier Company that years and years ago in like the mid early 90s made a little bank that looks exactly like the 1 you have on the bottom right of your screen little shotgun red. I still have the original blank from when we started the adventure. Have a couple of doll Mr ad Mrs Shotgun Red that Shotgun Red gave us when we took the River boat dinner for Cruise in Nashville at the Gran Ole Opry. I love your video and I especially like KFC Coleslaw. Thank you for your time.
I made this recipe...But instead of onion salt, I used half a grated onion....and it was just like the KFC coleslaw! I tried it with onion salt and it was just that little bit different! But thanks for the pointers and recipe. Its great!
I tried it with the bagged cabbage from Walmart. Guys, the flavor is dead on. I was amazed. Great recipe, not too soupy or messy, and it turned out great. You can adjust that sugar to taste. Thanks for sharing your recipe. Loved it!
This was amazingly delicious--but I substituted lo-cal light mayonnaise And dropped the sugar to 4 tablespoons instead of five to cut the calories and it was still so good!
i made this for the family new year dinner and everybody loved it and shoked by how similar it tastes to kfc one. we love kfc coleslaw and this recipe tastes exact like it. its just unbelievible thank you sooo sooo much
Thanks, it came out real good! I was a little worried about using apple cider vinegar because of it's strong taste but it turned out fine. I also added a couple dashes of celery seeds and substituted onion powder for fresh.
celery seed is a must! I have a great recipe where you halve the mayonaisse and substitue with sour cream and it is absolutely the bomb and I use fresh onion and of course the celery seed.
Made this a couple of times and it's the closest I've ever had to KFC slaw. The only thing I changed was I halfed the apple cider vinegar (1.5 tablespoons). I bought the store-bought cabbage and hand-chopped it to a finer texture (like KFC). I thought it was perfect. Had company over for dinner and their eyes popped when they got their first taste. :) They insisted on the recipe.
I use to help manage one of KFC's restaurants, ours was a smaller one but always very busy with customers lining up out the doors and around the building. One of the reasons was because for just a few cents more our customers could get shrimp in their coleslaw. We use to use the tiny little ready to use salad type shrimp but due to the particular flavors used in their coleslaw dressing it was an amazing combination.
It all depends on if you want it to taste flat or tangy. I use my mother's recipe. She never measured the amount of miracle whip or white vinegar, but it always tasted the same. How much of the "goop" she made depended on the size of the cabbage she started with.
Thank you, very much appreciate it!! I find it's still delicious by not using 5 Tblsp sugar, but instead using 1 Tblsp coconut sugar + 1 tsp organic raw honey and reducing the vinegar to 2 Tblsp and adding 1 Tblsp unsweetened almond milk (or other milk/milk substitute).
Love this recipe my daughter loves it so much I had to make enough for 150 people it was a big hit not any left by end of dinner!thanks so much for this recipe 🙏!
Here's a tip I discovered: I bought powdered heavy cream as a back-up for my morning coffee. Well, when I add that to mayonnaise, I get a creamy dressing that won't separate the way it will when you use fresh cream or 1/2 and 1/2. It doesn't need sugar or extra vinegar.
Shotgun Red, I have to say, I think your recipe is better than KFCs. I've tried a lot of different combinations to get 'just the right coleslaw' and I was always a little disappointed in the results, but Your recipe is my all time favorite and it's in my exclusive 5* collection. Because I like caraway, I added some in. Thanks so much!
I've used apple cider vinegar and it turned out great you hardly get it's strong flavor I also added a teaspoon of chilli vinegar to cut down on the sweetness
Sorta like any conventional pickling process. That is, soak some vegetable (softened by parboiling) in a vinegary sauce for a couple days. You almost can't go wrong.
Try Serve if you're diabetic. It's a substitute sweetener that tastes just like sugar with no bitter aftertaste. I tried Stevia and Truvia but no matter what people say, I found they had that unpleasant aftertaste. Swerve is the first sub. sweetener I've ever tried that I actually like.
