They aren't fundamental, but more so an enhancement of the overall enjoyment. One can run and fully enjoy a P's w/o an piercings just fine. It has so many features that it wouldn't leave you wanting.
He's a San-X character (just a Kawaii character Japan is obsessed with). He appears in some picture books and games but mainly he just adorns adorable merchandise :)

I have a question! Sorry if you've answered it before but when the tama's battery runs out and you'll need to replace them, does all your information get lost, or does it have a sort of save function on it when its battery dies? I'd hate to think you'd need to collect and redo EVERYTHING when the batteries need replacing.

There's no english version out yet. I think there won't be an english version :-\ I ordered one as shown in the video although I don't speak a word japanese, because the handling isn't that difficult, if you had an english tamagotchi of the previous generations. Do the colors seem a bit weird to you? I think it might be because the default rooms and menu bars are like pastel colors, but I dont know....just seems weird after playing ID L for so long.

It's designed to create items for the P's. However, you can use binary's program (can be found in the Japanese section of Tama-Zone) to tinker with them to convert them so that they work on the IDL.
Last one by Bandai America was in 2010. At this point, it doesn't look like Bandai America is interested in selling anymore Tamagotchis. They've moved on to something called L.I.F.E. which is a Tamagotchi themed clothing line.

It means the house is dirty. You need to purchase cleaning supplies from Tama Depa (vacuum, mop, scrub) and use them.
