    Thank you so much I just got in the echinacea herb from frontier co-op to put up so excited. I have taken echinacea goldenseal for many years if I even think I am coming down with anything and it has always worked for me in place of antibiotics such a great herb. I will vacuum seal it in small jars to keep it safe from air and light.

    I love how you share all the little things that it takes to be holistic. I don't have any kind of dehydrator, instead I will make small bunches or bouquet's and hang them to dry from my chain for my chandelier with the ceiling fan on low for most of the fall and into winter. Last yr my hubby bought me for the holiday's an herb drying ring rack. I always have something hanging from it (I'll even hang cut flowers when they start to droop to dry ) We are still living on grid in town but one day I do hope to move to a smaller place at least partially off grid. My MIL lived in a small town with only electric on grid, she had a well for water and propane for cooking and heat but with a big fireplace for supplemental heat. I would love to be that self sufficient with hopefully solar for primary/supplemental electric

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  7 років тому +1

      We are only partially off grid, in the summer, the public power is more of a back up that we really do not need and in the winter we do need it more as we get little solar but we do use our wood stove for everything we can, heating water, drying clothes, dehydrating foods, and more. I like the convenience of being able to use the best of both worlds but knowing we can survive if we ever lose the public power for any reason :)

      Laila Garrett when I first saw all the stalks I had to think of Susun Weed, she hangs stalk and all to dry. I don't have a dehydrator either, have the dehumidifier running in the basement, it's partially above ground, I hang everything there. Comfrey takes the longest, teas dry fairly fast and so do leaves of dandelion and plantain. It works, just takes longer and the dehumidifier would run anyway to keep the basement from getting musty, I just set it a bit drier.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  7 років тому +3

      I have tried hanging things here before, but there are two problems, one is it is often too humid for things to really dry well, and two is that I always have SO much dehydrating, I would run out of space to hang it all! I would have herbs hanging from wall to wall on all my ceiling space! haha

    • @kleineroteHex
      @kleineroteHex 7 років тому +1

      Rain Country Heidi, yes, all the things you dry..... I at times run out of hanging space, I use my wash line in the basement LOL I come up with new inventions all the time (a colander next to the portable AC hose, a rack over the distiller with the bamboo steamer on top)
      Since we don't have free solar energy to run a dehydrator I feel it uses too much electricity. I did put my tomato left overs in the sunoven with good results. Herbs however I don't want to dry in direct sunlight or I would put a rope in my car 😁

    If I have to dig up my echinacea anyways can I use the small roots even if I planted them at the beginning of this growing season? Otherwise they’ll just be going to the compost pile cuz we are tilling. Also, why do you not use the whole flower head with the echinacea? Are only the petals good?

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 роки тому

      I save the flower center for the seeds that I then use to either start new plants for myself or sell on my store. Those centers are pretty big too so the best way to utilize them would be to break them up first. As far as the roots, yes, if you are digging them up anyway, you can use them

    I have a question- I understand that with the Echinacea that the medicinal properties are more powerful and you get lower in the plant. I segregate mine in to three jars: first jar flower and leaves..second jar is the stems...third jar the roots. Is this a good way to do it so you can choose strength on any given time you drink it? or is ot better to mix it all together. I find that the flower and leaves look better when ground into a powder and smells great. Not sure if I'm doing it right ?

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  Рік тому

      Seems logical though I would not personally do it that way (separating) and I still only use the leaves and flower petals. The centers get saved for seed as I do sell them. And though echinacea does grow well once established here, I find it to be far more temperamental than my other perennials so I never intentionally dig up the roots. Even if the plant gets cut all the way back in growing season, it kills it. My husband accidentally mowed over one once and it never came back, not even the next year, so every year I start new plants to make up for the one or two I seem to lose each year. Thus, I never use the roots. I also never powder anything I am going to use in a syrup, tea, or tincture as it is much harder to strain out than pieces of the herb

      If you bought the echinacea from my store, you should have seen the marshmallow seed too as I always have them in stock. As far as seeds go, they are my best seller. etsy.com/shop/raincountryhomestead
      That brown, spikey, center piece of the echinacea is where the seeds are but they are down under the spikes. I did a video years ago showing wht they look like: ua-cam.com/video/W5uQAukLiSM/v-deo.html

      @@RainCountryHomestead, Thank you so much Heidi, appreciate ya & on my way to watch the video, which I should have watched some time ago, but as we say, "It is what it is & too MUCH happening as I know you're a busy person as well & I got all my seeds that I ordered from you & it has been cRaZy weather & about a month ago, my Marshmallow finally came up & I read that others were having the same issue, but let me tell you, I was so happy & it is a bit funny as it was a foot & a half tall & I smiled ear to ear & reminded myself that Ruby, not every plant starts in the summer, but there is also, so many plants during the winter that grow as well, but this year, I will only do my composting & at this time with the Oregon & Washington weather , that is more than I can do with all my pAiNfUl medical issues/conditions that is just not ending as deeply needed & so desired... Smiles & funluvn hugs & thank you for all your caring & sharing & "brightest blessings always coming both of your way"... What, I just paid attention & I noticed that I wrote the comment 2 yrs ago, leave it up to me, & noticed that when I put the comment to care & share with ya, lol... Blushing 😇

      This video is from last year and I managed to harvest plenty from my plants - I still have a quart jar of dried leaves and flowers from last year leftover even after using it in my homemade cold and flu syrup and my pain tincture. This year I started several more from seed from those same plants so I will have a good amount of echinacea :D

      The one I always link to as I think it is just the best for starting out because of the layout, the photos and the recipes is this one: Rosemary Gladstar’s Medicinal Herbs: amzn.to/2uN9CEX
      Other good ones to consider as you go along are:
      Prepper's Natural Medicine: amzn.to/2oBLX4m
      Rodale Medicinal Herbs Encyclopedia: amzn.to/2obOZ2N
      Medicinal Herbs Recipe Book: amzn.to/2mSn4VU
      Energetics of Western Herbs Volume 1: amzn.to/2nD4Q9t

      Hope that helps! :D

    Can we save seeds from the echinacea ?

  • @lisabooker6405
    @lisabooker6405 7 років тому

    I just made turmeric and ginger tinctures last night. I can hardly wait to start using them. I never knew you could use the powdered version to make tincture till I seen Stacy do it. So that's what I used. I ordered ginger from Baker Creek but they had a crop failure and had to cancel my order. I'll still try to grow it myself next year though. I wonder if I could just go to Whole Foods and buy some organic rhizomes from there and plant them? I don't see why not? Idk? Anyway...thank you for another great herb video. You know these are some of my favs! 😍
    Love, hugs and continued blessings, Lisa

      Same with me on the ginger and that was the second time I tried to order ginger from them. I have also bought fresh ginger locally and tried to plant it but it just would not grow. Turmeric I have tried growing twice so far. These roots do not seem to like it here :(

    • @kleineroteHex
      @kleineroteHex 7 років тому

      Rain Country I had tons of failed attempts with ginger, this year it worked! Keep it in your greenhouse in a pot. Turmeric will be next 😊

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  7 років тому +1

      This year, I tried growing turmeric in several places around the garden, in pots, and in the greenhouse. Nothing. I will likely try ginger again, but the problem I have with the green house is space. I already have to grow all my hot peppers and basil in pots in there if I want any, and there is no space for anything else. I want to grow a LOT more peppers and basil too. I think I need a second green house - which we are considering

    • @kleineroteHex
      @kleineroteHex 7 років тому

      Rain Country wow, you need to put basil in the green house - peppers I understand. I have basil popping up here and there, must have "lost" some seeds.
      Second green house, that means Mr Rain videos ☺
      I forget from your patio videos, do you have brick there? I could imagine pots with ginger against brick might work, same for turmeric, I think they don't need full sun. Once mine finally sprouted out, this time I used bought seed soil, the fluffy stuff; once I put it in a larger pot and outside I kept it covered with an upside down tomato cage covered in bubble wrap for a few weeks. May be this gives you a few ideas?

      I started mine from seed I had bought from Baker Creek. I now sell the seed when it is available (which will be fall) but I always sell out, that is why I have none available now.

    Hi Heidi. I'm not sure if you check these older vlogs for comments or not. But I have a question. I'm just going to try my new Nesco for the first time and thought I would go with the Echinacha as I have lots in my garden. My question is how long should I dry the leaves and flowers for? Thanks.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  6 років тому

      It depends on how full the dehydrator is and what heat setting. I recommend 105° and no higher and it will likely take a full day but check after 8 hours
