Using a Fluid Extractor to Change the Oil in my 3.0T

- Every good car youtube channel needs an Oil Change DIY, so here is mine! I'm using a fluid extractor for this DIY, so draining from the drain plug will not be covered. For those of you curious about using the drain plug, it is pretty self explanatory. Jack up the front of the car, remove the belly pan, and then use an allen wrench to remove the drain plug instead of a socket. This will reduce the risk of stripping the plug. I also think the plug is single use, so make sure you have a replacement on hand.
Using an Extractor is far simpler, and much cleaner. Audi says you can go 10,000 miles between oil changes, but I will never believe that. I change mine every 5,000 miles tops. Sludge is real, and I don't ever want it to become an issue. I will say, at least once a year it's not a bad idea to change your oil via the drain plug so you can inspect the oil and look for any signs of sludge.
The 3.0T Audi Engine requires 6.8L (7.2qts) of oil.

**Updates**
-At 1:03 I mention that ROWE is the "OEM" Supplier for most German Car Manufacturers in Germany. I misspoke. They are the OES, or Original Equipment Supplier, for oil and other fluids/oils for most German Car Manufacturers in Germany. The difference between OEM and OES is this: OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer... aka how the car comes from the factory. OES is what is used afterwards at the dealership. So, when you take your car to get the oil changed at the dealership, you are using OES oil... which in Germany is most likely ROWE. ROWE Also makes the OEM ZF Transmission fluid for Audi.

Which gasket? The only one on the engine is a small gasket located around the oil filter housing. I use a small right angle pick to get it off, and the new one just rolls over the housing and into place.

Love the idea of the oil extractor
Mine only took about 2 minutes to remove all the oil from my gti. Just need to make sure oil is warm/hot around 170 degrees. Keep air line open.
Your gti also has less oil in it.
As a recent 1st time Audi owner I was intimidated by the idea of using an extractor because I've always changed my oil through the drain plugs of my vehicles. I can't believe this was so much easier than changing the oil on my old 4Runner! Hardly any mess too (be careful when removing the old filter). This exact service cost me $365 the first time I had it done. Never again!

Thanks for this video, was considering going under the car to drain it however after see the exact mityvac I was eyeying for this job I'm considering dropping the money and, getting it especially since going underneath requires quite a few bits; one of which I don't have. I noticed the filter you have is a long one, which is what I'm used to seeing, picked up a filter from the dealership and, got a much smaller one and, they've assured me that it's fine for the car. Part number for it is O6E 115 562 H, -haven't been able to find this anywhere else except rockauto for a wix branded filter. Think there would be a difference?- EDIT: mistyped the part number in google and, ECS tuning is coming up with it, seems like it's a revised filter from the B and, E filters.
It is 100% worth spending the money and getting an evacuation tool. The mityvac is nice, but it is a lot more expensive. I really like this one because of 1) The Price, 2) It is manual or Pneumatic, and 3) It comes with a cap so you can transport it easily.
Regarding the Oil Filter, that does sound a little suspect. I stick to Mann filters since they are OEM and work great without being very expensive. The filter in the video was purchased at my local Audi dealership. But just looking up the revised part number you have, it does appear to be the same one I used in my service. I think you will be good as long as it has that part number and is a Mann filter. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Got the mityvac 7201 (EWK wasn't available at the time here in Montreal and, the other alternative had leaking issues), changed the oil today and, bloody hell it was quick, easy and, almost mess free (after pouring it out, had to clean the spout and, where the hose connects to). About the filter, it was actually correct, was also a Mann filter which was written directly on it, as the C7.5 seems to have updated the filter housing and, went with a smaller filter in comparison to what's in your video (initially thought you were driving a 2016). The cap is longer now as the threads are on the outside instead of the inside, there's a single gasket which goes below the threads and, the filter no longer goes on the cap but on the other end as the metal cylinder is there instead (clicking sound is there when you push the filter in). Around the filter housing, it didn't feel as cluttered and, tightly spaced as what's shown in your video however I can't recall 100% at the moment.
Folks in Montreal, when getting the oil recycled we're supposed to put the fluid in a closed tub or bottle beforehand as the eco centres don't have drums for us to pour it out; some municipalities have trucks that do waste collection where you can pour things into drums however that's once a year.

Excellent vids man! Trying this out for the first time.... When doing it manually do you have to pump it up ever so often to keep it going? Or once it starts should it continue? Mine has stopped once and I pumped it up some more and it started back..... Thanks!

Here is a good diy on your motor. Using the fluid pump would make the job a lot faster and easier. It looks like you need 6.8 quarts, or 6.5 liters. Good luck!

I've changed my oil this way but my oil level indicator on the MMI doesn't recognize the full level. Keeps saying to add a Qrt. Could it be a bad oil level sensor? Have you run into this before?
It could most definitely be a bad sensor... That isn't unheard of. What you can do to test this is by an actual dip stick for the car and check your oil. If it is showing full, but the mmi is still saying low, then you have a bad sensor. Hope this helps!
Hi, i know this channel is dedicated to A6, but I was wondering if you help with a 2018 Q7. I accidentally hit my garage door and ripped the roof antenna right off. Where do you to get genuine audi parts that won't cost an arm and a leg?

Hello again, Just did my service and cant get the Service due to go away (Keeps coming back after clearing the service). Ive read that you might need a VCDS or OBD tool that resets it completly but wasnt sure. Also when I started up my engine it sounded dry af and knocked a little but went away, is that normal? I assume its just cause the filter was dry but was unsure.
The service due message has to be reset via obd11 or vcds
And yes, initial startup is just like a cold start. Chain rattle for 1-2 seconds is normal

Great video! Just changed the oil in my 2014 A6 with an extractor pump. I too, need to get the Service Due message turned off after resetting the service interval. Is an obd11 or BCD’s something I can buy and do myself? I’m told only a dealer can do it and will only reset if all required services are up to date.
You can do it with vcds or obd11

Hello, I've done this method with a pump to change my oil on my 13' C7 and it worked perfect. The last time I was doing the oil change I didn't let my car cool down as much and once it finished pumping out all the oil, the hose didn't want come out. I had to force it out not knowing it had melted on the bottom of the tube. So now I have a piece of plastic hose stuck on the inside of the dipstick tube. Do you know what's the best way to get it out? I can't find any videos on how to remove the tube without disassembling the whole front end of the car. Any suggestions?
Are you sure it is stuck in the dip stick tube? If it is, you can remove the dip stick tube & then clean it out
@@AudiC7Owners I did end up removing the dipstick and the plastic hose still stay on stuck inside the oil pan. I had to remove the oil pan (pain in the a$$). As soon as i removed the pan the piece that was stuck just fell down. It was somehow stuck pinched inside the pan that it would not come out.
At least you got it out without damaging anyone.
I did see a post on a Facebook group where a guy pushed the tube to the bottom, and then somehow it bent the tube & he kept pushing it. The tube went up into the motor and got stuck because of it. Just be careful you aren't forcing the tube anywhere it isn't supposed to go.
Haha that's awesome, same exact fluid extractor I purchased for the exact same vehicle. Although I guess I got one of the lucky versions, mine doesn't burn anywhere near that much oil, I'm doing 5k oil changes, I lose at most .5 liters in that timeframe. In fact, I wish the extractor was just slightly larger as I wind up having to dump some of it to complete the oil change.
Also, I had no idea that's what the wire was for.
Also also, nice video! I do mine pretty much exactly the same, except I don't use the compressor anymore, too much noise and doesn't really speed things up, I can manually pump it about every minute for a few pumps and it keeps chugging along. If you're up for it and have an automatic, I'd love a transmission drain/refill video, that's the next project I've got coming up, shifting a little cludgy and there's a service bulletin for it (which just says to replace the oil).

Thanks for the great video. Were you able to fit all of the oil into your extractor w/o issue given its 6.5L capacity?
Yes! All my oil fit into it. These cars tend to burn oil between changes anyways so unless you just topped it off to the max you should have no problem getting all your oil in there.
Should crack the oil filter housing cap prior to extraction so the oil can drain out of the filter.
You accomplish the same thing opening the fill cap
I had a bit of trouble pushing the tube down to the drain pan. It actually got stuck but after pulling and twisting, it came out intact. Had a few crushed areas on the tube though. Is this normal?
Sounds like you forced it too far. It should go effortlessly until it bottoms out in the oil pan. If you push on it, it will bend and push up into the bottom of the engine. It can actually get stuck there so you are lucky you got it out. Most people have to take the pan off to get it out
Does anyone know if we can extract more oil from engine if vehicle is pitched slightly? I'm assuming if rear of car was raised a bit there might be a better chance of "fuller" capture amount? [3.0T, that is]

The o-rings should come with whatever filter you buy. The 2nd filter is located on the part of the car where the oil filter mounts into the engine. You will find it if you look. Good Luck.
Thanks for the video huge savings by doing it yourself. Where did you get the blacked out grill package from? I have a 2015 A6 and wanted to blackout all the chrome trim. Also do you recommend any aftermarket filters or should i stay with the oem parts from the dealership

Your oem intake is definitely the most efficient intake, but if you want to hear your supercharger then you have to open it up. Mine is an Injen. CTS Turbo is developing one for our cars. Apr makes one, and so does awe tuning.
But if you were referring to the oil filter, yes just stick with oem. They aren't that expensive.
Hey one question...that filter gasket you put back into the oil filter cap stay in place??? Because when I turned it upside down to put it back on to the housing that same gasket fell out of the cap

My '16 A4 says the factory fill is Castrol. I changed mine to Amsoil after getting it at 138k
I'd only recommend Rowe or Motul

Awesome! You won't be disappointed. And to answer your question, no I'm not worried. I've driven 7 VW/Audi cars ranging from early 90's golf's to the current audi and have never had a sludge issue. I've only ever seen it in the late 90's/Early 2000's 1.8T's that weren't maintained properly. Plus, changing your oil conventionally won't prevent sludge.

So I've been trying to find anything about it and I have come up empty. But if your filter is on top like this one, it should be extremely similar in process. You would just need to verify the amount of oil needed with the dealership.

Not very accurate. I highly suggest buying a dipstick from fcp euro
I learned that the dipstick from an Audi Q5 (about the same year) is a perfect fit for the Audi A6/C7.

Same as any other audi lol. About a quart per 5k miles. More if I push it harder.

Shouldn't you have removed the oil filter first? And then extract the oil.
Seeing how it always contains extra oil in the filter
The oil filter is located at the top of the engine. So once I Crack open the oil cap, along with the dip stick tube, there is no vacuum. This allows the oil the drain from the oil filter into the engine as I'm extracting it. If you did it the other way around you would end up with a huge mess.

Ohhhh. If it can attach with a normal air line then you should be able to. Just not sure how powerful it is compared to a normal compressor.

Well done ! Just an off the subject question: I noticed what appears to be an after market air intake installed. If that's your only engine mod, have you noticed much of a difference, and why did you do it ??

It's an Injen intake, and I solely did it so I could hear the supercharger. Your stock intake is the most efficient, but I wanted to hear my supercharger 😂

This will leave sediment and old oil at the bottom of the oil tank. You will never be able to get that with an extractor. You need to drain your oil if you want your engine to have a long life. Anyone who tells you different is trying to sell you an extractor.
Actually, this is how Audi does their oil changes at the dealership as well. And no matter if you drain it or evac it, there will always be old oil in the engine to a degree. Having said that I've measured the amount of oil coming out vs what I put in (including top offs), and the amount I get out is always almost exactly what I put in.
These engines don't have issues with sludge build up, so as long as you are changing your oil regularly you are fine.
And it sure beats stripping the drain plug which is a notorious issue on these oil pans.
I've used oil extractors for the last 15 years on my vehicles. They both have over 150,000 miles on them and I've never had an engine issue. You will never truly drain all of the old oil from your engine. Mercedes uses oil extractors for their oil changes.
