This is a part of Halo 2 that always made me think "WTF were they thinking?" CDR Keyes specifically asked for all the info Cortana had on Installation 04, which definitely would have included an extensive briefing on the Flood. Aside from 117, SGT Johnson knew the Flood better than any human alive, and was leading the strike team. Yet the humans still deploy as if they have no idea what to expect or how to fight them. In Amber Clad's marine forces are defeated and consumed in detail, suffering nearly 100% casualties just to reach the Index. The frigate itself was in low atmosphere over the Quarantine Zone, and almost certainly breached by the time Tartarus betrays the Arbiter. They had no backup, and no way out. Without the Covenant's timely intervention, Keyes and Johnson, and the Index, would have ended up in the Gravemind's tentacles, right alongside Regret.
This is what pisses me off too. Miranda was just as reckless as her father in that respect though, Jacob Keyes himself wanted to be with the boots on the ground and ultimately got himself and the rest of his crew killed.

Dispatch Pelicans once the shield was down, make a beeline for the gondola and fly into the shaft to provide air cover, while the Elites were bogged down in no man's land. Shoot their way to the Index chamber, grab it, and return to the gondola terminal for extraction.
Good point. But you know what makes me think "WTF were they thinking?" Why the f didn't they put humans for you to fight!? I will never understand this.
By the time Miranda reached the Index there were only 4 survivors well really only two because Arbiter kills the others off-screen but I believe the only reason for them getting that far is because of Johnson's experience fighting the Flood.
4:50 it really shows the determination of humanity. The whole video shows the casualties of the marines trying to get the index, yet they keep pushing through
The humans should've had it easier here since the Sentinels didn't attack Reclaimers and they kept the Flood occupied but the fact they were still overrun quickly with nearly all Marines lost and In Amber Clad captured proves how dangerous and virulent the Flood is. You can see a Pelican fly over and an Enforcer going the other way, ignoring it.
I always found it odd that Bungie couldn't implement the Flood reanimation animations for uninfected corpses to create more combat forms ingame in Halo 2, they could have simply copy and pasted the reanimation animation from when a pod infector goes to a combat form's corpse: apply it to an uninfected creature's skeleton and then have it transition into the infected counterpart. *but then I remember how much of a pain in the ass the Flood on Halo 2 Legendary was so it probably was for the better they never tried...*
It was in Gravemind's interest to spare a few humans to take the Index, knowing they want to prevent Halo from being fired while the Covenant wants to.

@@first001 Yeah. So much content was left out, and it makes for some strange sections in the campaign. For example, as a child, seeing Regret again with the gravemind was a bit jarring, seeing as we just killed him on the other side of the ring. Of course there are various explanations for this, but seeing it in game for the first time was mad confusing.
Very niche video, definitely right up my alley. I noticed a couple of Marine corpses 2:45 were not in their default death pose, so were they spawned in as active AI and killed by the nearby combat forms?

Playing this mission as a kid was terrifying, playing it as an adult is still terrifying.

Yes those 3 marines start alive fighting the flood and sentinels, a trigger in the middle of the room kills them.
He is correct, and it is actually possible to save them from being killed.
