After this video was requested, it took me a little bit to try and figure out exactly how to build Venom accurately, but I think I finally figured it out. I'm really happy with the final result and it has just the right mix of classes and features to give us the full character.

Had to just try to do a bit of a badass build, and it took me a while to figure out how to build this one, but I'm super happy with how accurate it feels to pull of Venom
Why do you keep saying 'unarmoured strike'?
I like this interpretation of Venom, it's nice to see a version where you don't have to be a spellcaster!
A spellcaster would feel just wrong for a character like Venom, he's such a brute in a lot of ways, I could never move away from a brawler type of character.
For an alternate option to starting race, the Dhampir from Ravenloft fits quite well. You get a bite attack, spider climbing, and *drum roll* the option to have a sentient symbiote/parasite living inside you that craves brain juice and can contest your characters actions. It's literally the source of your powers.

@@StevenLara-xn8ek The lore matches perfectly with the dhampir for the reason's giving above. You were human, then something got inside you and makes you want to eat brains.
It would be really cool to play venom with two players, one being Eddy and the other being venom (I mean venom can also just be the dm but it would feel even better to collaborate against the dm)
I've done crazy players or cursed players where the DM controls aspects of it. It can lead to some really interesting moments.

In ravenloft in the form of dark gifts there's actually a symbiote you can homebrew and reflavor it a little more to suit your needs and you don't have to choose the haunted one background if you talk your DM into letting you have it at level one.
Ooh, this one is gonna be great! One thing I heard playing as Venom in a tabletop is to have someone talk in your ear and you have to address the symbiote (this works with the Venom 2018 version)
Yeah, I definitely had fun with this one, and I could imagine this would be fun to play especially if you really dove into the Eddie Brock vs Symbiote in one character.

Venom is weak to thunder AND fire; if you want to be in character.
A 2-level dip into Circle of the Spores Druid is also a good flavor choice.
8:58 I don't know what Jeremy was thinking when he posted that, because the PHB pg 195 says, "Instead of using a weapon to make a melee weapon attack, you can use an unarmed strike: a punch, kick, head-butt, or similar forceful blow (none of which count as weapons)."
your not wrong about Venom being a primordial, his race was made by a god to be his weapon to rule the universe in the comics
I just did a variant human but used a homebrew warlock class called the symbiote.
Gonna experiment more tho
Worth pointing out that, iirc, Simic Hybrid's darkvision is standard (which doesn't work in magical difference),while Astral Self Monk's darkvision also works against magical darkness.
to add to this, the astrial self monk's "darkvision" is, in fact, not darkvision. it does nothing for you in dim light. its the monk version of the warlock devil sight. (also its range is 120 feet whereas the simic hybrid get 60 feet of darkvision)
I can see going hexblade warlock for a Carnage build, armor of shadows being the wrapped up in the symbiote.
Venom is one of my FAVORITES!!!!!!!! You also mentioned Spawn in this video, I think that would be another really cool build!!! Love your stuff
Pretty cool build. I hadn't thought of Simic Hybrid. I ended up using Dhampir for my Venom build. Good stuff, man!

Great and fun build as always! Other youtubers have used homebrew for this character, but your work here is made with 100% official sources to build a so complex character. U are amazing!
Thanks Merc!!! There's so many different DnD books out at this point so it's great to rely on what's part of the official books. I feel more creative trying to work with the restrictions, and the challenge of that makes it more fun to me, and then it's almost always allowed to be played at most Dungeons and Dragons tables, where a lot of homebrew stuff isn't allowed.
@@dndbuilds Well said! Sometimes It's also fun to imagine a character with his special powers and skills, like a new superhero concept the use the multiclass build to forge your "new baby"
@@chrimedina I actually had a campaign that I ran, and tried to have characters start at level 0 rather than level one, which made things interesting. They had to figure out what their character was good at, and unlock the potential to officially be recognized as part of a particular DnD Class. It made some interesting story points when it worked out.
I knew what they wanted to go towards, so giving the opportunities in the story for them to discover those abilities was a lot of fun, and it created more natural multiclasses and unique builds.

Slow fall can be expressed as shooting goo arms to reach the ground and slow the fall
I played a lizardfolk spores druid that mostly fought bare handed in melee with the symbiotic entity. Felt a lot like a venom build especially since I could use the special bite attack to eat enemies and regain hit points
I've seen a couple of different Venom builds on some well known channels. This is by far my favorite version that I've seen. Kudos on a great build, and you've gotten yourself a new subscriber. 👍

@@yaburu Tulok was the well known channel I was referring too. I remember seeing another build on 'Drow Bard' channel but he doesn't post as actively anymore
Deep Speech would more fitting as the symbiote is more of an aberration than elemental. But not a big deal.
So I made a Venom-esc character using the Blood Hunter class. If you go for Order of the Lycan and dip four levels into Warlock for range options, that pretty much works.
Watching these videos all I'm realising is theres so much to dnd I have no idea about at all and I have no idea how you would find out. Everyone I've ever known also imposes their own rules and limitations that normally stunts my creativity, like I think oh this is a cool idea, looks up online to see if possible or something similar, it is! To dm "can I do thi-" "No" "oh I'll be um a wizard I guess" 😔
What about Dyrrn's Tentacle whip? You use bonus action to have it slither in or out your arm, you can't have it taken away from you while attuned and can't untune unless someone removes curse. That represents its clingy nature.
I think this could be a great Venom I went the oose carapace simbiont it works just as well
Yeah that works just as well, and the extra AC is definitely a better choice when it comes to optimization, and still works with the character. I just felt the need for an extra set of gooey arms
I think an honorable mention would be the plasmoid race from spelljammer! Now that we have it

I really enjoy your creative re-flavoring of official content to fit. Its a big draw for DnD, the creative flavoring.
That's part of what I love about DnD too, just finding the best way to fit your creation into that DnD world.
there's actually a cool feature that was added with Ravenloft, called Dark Gifts. These are aspects that the DM can choose to give to players, and if they accept, they gain a certain ability or two. One of them is actually called Symbiotic Being, but it's not really like the marvel symbiote, instead allowing you to reroll a saving throw by spending a hit dice, with the possibility of being charmed by it if you don't follow its agenda. I'd say the best options would either be Second Skin, so you can cast Alter Self and get natural weapons, or Shadow Quirk, which lets your extend the reach by 10 ft and gives you Mage Hand, which you can describe as being black tendrils that grow and extend from your body. The rules say you can only have one at a time, but I'd probably homebrew something that would be a combination of the 3, with limited uses and the possibility of being controlled by the symbiote.
edit: after seeing the barbarian subclass, I'd instead make it a combo of Shadow Quirk and Symbiotic Being
Just checked the Astral Self subclass. Astral Sight doesn't give you darkvision. Darkvision lets you see a bit better in normal darkness only up to 60ft. Really well in dim light and fairly well in full darkness, as well as only in black and white. Astral Sight is like the Devil's Sight Eldritch Invocation, allowing you to see up to 120ft normally in both normal and magical darkness. No dim light vs darkness specifics, no black and white, and darkvision doesn't let you see in, for example, something like the Darkness spell, where Devil's Sight and Astral Sight do. So there is an additional benefit to that level for this build.

I used this build for a level 7 oneshot, instead of the 4th level in monk i just took a level in fighter for the unarmed fighting style for the d8 damage, and wore black half plate to give me a 16 AC. was pretty fun playing a character that talked to his symbiote while the party thought i was a psychopath.
I love hearing about people using my actual builds, I'm so happy it turned out well even with some minor adjustments. And I'm sure everybody thinking your character was a little crazy turned into some good role-playing moments
@@dndbuilds yea, my dm made me roll to resist eating a human cause Poise (venom) was hungry. it was interesting.
@@wetstuff oh that would be a fun mechanic to throw in, I've had a few things where there's wisdom saves to resist going into a fit of rage from a cursed item, but I feel like it would be even more fun with a Venom build
Personally, I would’ve taken either a one level dip in Druid, or Magic initiate Druid to gain access to Thornwhip.
I’m thinking about playing an Ooze Beast Barbarian, that’s just sorta all the goopy parts of venom and none of the host

Good build. If you wanted the weakness to sonic (thunder) and FIRE and your DM is cool you could get resistance to 2 other damages to compensate (venom can take a hit so in exchange I would say resistance to bludgeoning all the time as he helps heal
( with the promise from your Dm that not all monsters with have thunder if fire attacks of course )
That's not a bad idea. Except I think you already get resistance to bludgeoning damage if you're raging. So I would probably ask for resistance to necrotic and, say... poison, maybe?

I get that you want to stick to source material but I think that your should use body of the astral self for thunder damage because then you could improve the original by helping Venom overcome his weakness
Could you do a character build of Clayface for a video? There's been several versions of Clayface throughout the history of DC's Batman comics, but I want to lean more towards Basil Karlo as Clayface.
You should also do carnage i know it would be vary similar but it could be decently different

Nah the most important part about venom is that "WE are venom".
Player 1: small plasmoid aberrant mind sorcerer, take mounted combatant. Cast buff spells on your mount (the other player) and cast tentacle themed spells. Also make a psychic link between you 2.
Player 2: play a medium race. Put 1 level in monk and go the rest in barbarian. Take unarmed fighter through fighting innitiate. Could go any barbarian subclass, bear totem works well since you'll be taking all the hits aimed at player 1.
Player 1 rides player 2 into battle.
I think these kinds of builds are AWESOME! And I started on the original box sets! As far as an alternate Venom build, how about using Psionics? I dropped out of active play during V. 3.5, due to no group, but I think there could be possibilities ......
Only thing I'd change is the race/Lineage, making him a Dhampir. Otherwise, spot on.

Can I make a request? How about taking the tentacle monster further and try to build a Shoggoth or Cthulhu (not a warlock who made a pact but Cthulhu itself) as a PC?
Cthulhu is basically a god, so as long as you don't mind he would be severely nerfed, I can try to give it a shot.

This build is fantastic. I'm curious about what feats people would suggest to enhance this build!
I think he took ASIs instead of feats for this build, but I could think of a couple of trade-offs: Sentinel (for its demobilization properties, defense because constitution has room for it and advantage/disadvantage modifiers. And , if dm allows it, Polearm Master. Why not? Extra reach and weaponized limbs with Astral Self for added damage;} ? Perhaps Mobile, for increased movement in/out of difficult terrain, but I'm leaning towards Sentinel and PAM for Venoms maniacal flavor lol
@@jswinginit1 Getting the unarmed fighting style doesn't hurt either for extra damage from grapples.
What do you think the best magic items to get would be? I can think of insignia of claws and bracers of defense maybe but that’s about it.
Those Ability Scores pretty much sum it up - Venom's not the brainiest guy(s) around, & Charisma... uh, what Charisma?

can you do a punisher inspired build?
Can you do Green Lanturn (Euther Hal Jordan or John Stewart)? Flash (Barry Allen if you can’t do him please do Wally wear)? A red Lanturn? (Atrocititous , dex Starr, or bleez) A Sinestro Lanturn (either Sinestro or arkillo)?
The lanterns are super difficult, but I am trying to figure out how to do them. In regards to the flash, I actually did a build for Sonic the hedgehog a while back just to see how fast I could make a character and I think that wound up being about as fast as I could possibly go, but it required to not be a human character so it might not feel that need as much

I liked the build, it is a great attacker, but that AC 14 is very low. Based on the newer materials available, what would you do to increase AC?
The build caps out at 16 AC, with +2 more if Awakened of Astral Self is used for 18. And Dodge as a Bonus Action if you want to push defense higher. Not to mention the damage resistance from Rage and the healing from the bite when below half HP, and the 20 Con score.
Barbarian.... I think I know where this is going. XD

This was a thousand times more fun than I had in mind.
You can grapple 2 enemies with your arms, 2 more enemies with your hentay tentacles (XD), and keep beating them with your astral punches!.

@@dndbuilds There is only one small thing that bugs me.
The third level in barbarian is wasted, the bite gives it a lot of flavor, but from a mechanical point of view, once you start punching you don't care about melee weapons anymore, and consequently, you don't care about your natural weapons either.
If I would change something, I would choose a totem barbarian for the bear resistance, and with one of the ASI instead of upgrading CON, I would take skill expert feat to improve your grappling EVEN MORE.
@@noditianniz-emir7075 I think when it comes to optimization, that would be best, and would definitely add a level of tank-ness. I just couldn't avoid having some real references to the gnarly teeth Venom has.

Could this work as a carnage build or would that have to be a different build
It could definitely work for Carnage, the one adjustment would be the damage type... Because carnage has a tendency to make actual weapons out of his body, so you could try to find a way to make a special type of weapon, maybe like mix in some pact of the blade... But thats just getting overly technical, a swap from bludgeoning to slashing damage could do the trick
If your DM lets the beast barbarians claw come from your Simic arms or astral arms then it would work for carnage.
With path of the giant out would you of incorporated it into this build?
Not if I'm trying to stick with the idea of venom, just because path of the beast allows for additional appendages which feels more true for venom.

@@dndbuilds You CAN use it for natural weapons, however. So things like the dhampir’s fangs or a Beast Barbarian’s natural weapons could benefit from Divine Smite if you multiclass with Paladin
Unfortunately, JC also tweeted about this specific topic:
"Unarmed strikes are melee weapon attacks. And they don't work with Divine Smite, which requires a weapon."
So definitely RAI, you can't smite on a punch. The only thing I can see in the RAW for Divine Smite that might support his ruling on that is the bit about dealing radiant damage "in addition to the *weapon's* damage" (emphasis mine). But other than that, I don't get it.
So despite RAI, and the tenuous logic of RAW, by FIMTMR, you can smite with a punch.
You would've been better off taking barb to lvl5 and taking the fighting initiate armored fighting feat for a d8 unarmed strike. Monk just doesn't give enough to justify. Barb has its own defense and unarmed movement. The d4 martial arts it nothing compared to the d8 unarmed fighting style. And there just aren't enough ki points to matter unless you're taking majority monk with also wouldn't be worth it just because multiclassing leave a lot lacking anyway.
Can you do the seven deadly sins please? And can you do the 10 commandments?

I knew that request was going to come at some point, but Spiderman is so hard to build in DnD, because he's got so many key features, and there's not enough ASI's to go around. I'm still going to try to figure him out, but he has insane Dex, super high Strength, and he's super smart. We'd be able to dump CHA and WIS pretty easily, but most of the other stats are so high, that it's hard to avoid. But I definitely plan to give him a shot in the future, I just haven't been able to figure him out quite yet.

Avocado - 1 hp, randomly has either 16 AC or 8 AC depending on Ripeness. But it's impossible to tell whether or not it's ripe until an attack roll has been made on it.
Who’s your favorite spider man villain
I always thought Venom and Carnage was some of the coolest out of his villains, so they were definitely top of my list. Also fans of Mysterio and Electro just because I thought electric powers were cool growing up, and illusion was always kind of sneaky and interesting. But I think Hydro and Kraven the hunter never got enough credit...
And frankly one villain that needs more ties to Spiderman in the movies, is Kingpin. I know they usually connect Kingpin and Daredevil more often, but he was such a big presence in Spiderman, that I would love to see more of it.
Not quite as straight forward of an answer as I should have given, but it's kind of hard to pick just one.

@@Groovygriffin_ green goblin is always a good choice, I just never got as attached to him because I watched the animated series, and at that same time I was watching Batman the animated series. And if I was going to go for a cackling sinister villain, I couldn't pass up Mark Hamill's Joker.

Actually, you aren't "able" to ignore Unarmored Defense from monk, you *HAVE TO.* According to the rules on multiclassing, (PH p. 164), "if you already have the Unarmored Defense feature, *you CAN NOT gain it again from another class.* So here's hopin' this build's WIS never gets higher than its CON ... 😉
I like the build; it's too bad it couldn't afford three levels of fighter, though. Giant's Might from Rune Knight would've gone a long way to help "bulk up" Venom quite a bit. In fact, I could easily see the character as a barbarian 9/fighter 11 multiclass.
I do like the way you reimagined the Astral Self monk to make its abilities work thematically with this character, though. 😁
I understood that to mean you can't have both. Like any AC calculation, you can't double up. Draconic fortitude and unarmored defense. It's one or the other. But I see how you could interpret it the other way, too. Hopefully they will clarify that better next year.
Step 1: Use Mutants & Masterminds 3e
Step 2: Figure out which power level it should be at and build from there.
Step 3: Done
