That little "mini game" thing with Mario's head was just a 3D showcase. It was mind-blowing having control over a three dimensional model like that back when it came out. PlayStation had a couple of strange things like that too, on the demo disc you got with the original model you had a 3 dimensional dinosaur you could spin round, make run and roar etc. I used to sit on it for ages. The leap from 2d to 3d will never be replicated, it was truly awesome, in the classic sense of the word.

I think the Toads fade in because they're supposed to be trapped inside the castle walls?? I was never sure if it literally meant they're stuck in the actual walls (similar to how the levels exist inside the paintings), or just figuratively stuck within the castle walls as in they couldn't leave. 😅

another tip is on the first level when you're climbing up the hill you can step into one of the bomb spawns and it acts as a portal!
