  • Ustad Dabir Khan - Raga Shuddha Sarang (Rudra Veena)
    Raga Lalita Gouri (Vocal)
    Raga Shree (Rudra Veena)
    Ustad Mohammad Dabir khan is the last Rudra Veena player from the direct lineage of Tansen. He was the grandson of Ustad Wazir Khan beenkar, {teacher of great maestros like Ustad Allauddin Khan and Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan} and great grandson of Ustad Umrao Khan beenkar.
    The been baaj is a mix of Khandar vani and Gourhar vani which is strictly followed in Senia Beenkar Gharana, one of the ancient Dhrupad gharanas of India.

    Thanks for posting this rare jewel! Is this the same Dabir Khan who was the grandson of Ustad Wazir Khan of Rampur? My guru Ustad Ali Akbar Khansahib said he received some taleem from him; he shared some songs in Lalita Gauri and Shankara, etc. I recognize the stylistic 'chaap."

    I never heard of this Great Artist...I think most of drupad artists took music for meditation and never for name and fame...

      Thanks for you comment. You are absolutely right about Dhrupad artists. But I dislike when people disregard a great artist if he has got the 'fame'. Also in any great artist you will find both the "Meditative approach" and the 'taiyari' again here I discord with people who think taiyari means playing for the people. It is a part of the description of a raga and is very very hard to achieve especially in complex ragas.

      I have traced almost 40 of his students so far. I'm sure there are more. Together they have created a legacy over 1000 students. I will continue uploading some recordings from his Gharana which is the direct Senia beenkar gharana.

      +SobersChatterjee what about pure rudra veena how many players can play now a days in india

    • @SobersChatterjee
      @SobersChatterjee  9 років тому +6

      +Chinmay Ranodaria That depends on what you call purity... Someone would say that traditional sitting posture matters, someone would say traditional size of the veena matters (both of which are not obeyed by Ud Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, but I think no one has ever played veena like him in History)... To us, musicians the raagdari matters the most and the traditional way of exposition of a raga in dhrupad anga.. keeping that in mind I shall say that the students of Senia gharana and Dagar gharana both are playing with purity even in sitar and surbahar.

      okk thanks for your information but I want to know if they started playing drupad on been so what about early styles that's I am asking you

    • @SobersChatterjee
      @SobersChatterjee  9 років тому +2

      +Chinmay Ranodaria , I'm afraid I don't understand your question... Are you asking about Rudra Veena before Dhrupad? If so, then the veena players before Dhrupad, either used to play ragas in the temples, darbars or played simple folk tunes. But the word Beenkar or finally Beenkar gharana came into existence with Dhrupad. So there is no question of purity etc as there were no strict system as such. One can say many things about the past.... the ragas were more elaborated or the whole musical tradition were more pure etc but these are matters of research that's all.

    Thanks for uploading this masterpiece. My current guruji's guruji was a student of Ustad Dabir Khan and Pandit Ravishankar. Guruji told me this thus I searched about him and found this soothing and meditative rendition.
    Can you tell me who's the representative of Been, Surbahar and Sitar from Senia Gharana? Apart from Sahana Banerjee on Sitar?

      In retrospect everyone playing some kind of Indian Classical instruments have their roots in Senia (either) Beenkar or Rababiya gharana. Senia gharana is a huge thing to discuss.. even 10 blog posts are nothing to explain properly. If you want to focus on the modern Beenkar relationships think about the grandfather and great grandfather of Ud. Dabir Khan. All of them learnt from Nirmal Shah beenkar. Ud. Dabir Khan's great grandfather Ud. Umrao Khan taught Ghulam Muhammad and (his son) Sajjad Muhammad who in turn taught Ud. Imdad Khan (grandfather of Ud. Vilayat Khan) but he shifted later and formed his own gharana involving Khayal elements in it so they don't represent Beenkar gharana anymore.
      Ud. Dabir Khan's grandfather Ud. Wazir Khan was the teacher of both Ud. Allauddin Khan and Ud. Hafiz Ali Khan.
      So any students of Ud. Wazir Khan (Beenkar), Ud. Muhammad Ali Khan (Rababiya) and Ud. Bande Ali Khan (Beenkar) will represent the later part of Senia gharana.
      Therefore any students (and further students) of Ud. Allauddin Khan, Ud. Hafiz Ali Khan, Pt. BKRC and Ud. Dabir Khan will represent Senia gharana.
      Finally the modern Indian classical music scene dominated by the greats like Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ud. Ali Akbar Khan, Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia and Ud. Amjad Ali Khan are all Senias.
      Now think of their students.. it goes like this.
      The person you are talking about is (perhaps) Pt. Shyamal Chattopadhyay.. what a nice person, I know him since long. Pt. SC and my guruji Pt. Santosh Bandopadhyay were both students of Ud. Dabir Khan. I also learnt from Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta (student of Pt. RMM) who also has his legacy.. there were also Ud. Asad Ali Khan who passed few years ago.
      Everywhere is Senia gharana dear friend only the style may vary because artists will always be influenced by the senior artists they love most..

    what vani or gharana does Ustad Ji belong to? I dont know much but I feel his dhrupad is different than Dagar vani

    • @SobersChatterjee
      @SobersChatterjee  8 років тому +3

      Senia beenkar gharana... direct lineage of Miyan Tansen. Btw, Dhrupad singing/playing has been influenced by all four vanis. So, though Senia gharana incorporated Khandar and Gaurhar vani it also includes the other two. The same can be said about other gharanas also. Hence Dagar gharana (gharana led by Dagar lineage, don't confuse with Dagarvani) also use properties of other vanis.

      @@SobersChatterjee Hi, great video! Did you ever end up making a video describing the 4 vanis? That would be amazing to learn the difference between them. Do you know if there are any other dhrupad artist recordings that are in this Senia style?
      I slowed down and changed to rudra veena pitch, a Nikhil B. & Ravi S. sitar recording to approximate Maihar style dhrupad, Raviji's Malkauns seems to have echoes of a rudra veena dhrupad style.
