Interesting, unless the truck had a mechanical issue he was doing something incorrect yet he is praised for his actions. Don’t get me wrong, he did well thinking about the gravel but was he thinking well before he got to that situation?
@Frank. T I am one of you guys, I might only hold a HR license but I drive that route a bit and I ride passenger with friends that do drive semi’s down there. If you are in correct gear and correct speed keeping the correct distance during the decent this shouldn’t have happened full stop. I get overtaken regularly but trucks doing the wrong thing down that route so I do know what I am talking about, there are far too many drivers out there that think they are in full control in any situation and can drive how they want , you guys criticising us that say the driver was doing something wrong seem to be one of those arrogant drivers that give all of us a bad reputation!
Many believe one of the major keys to success is waking up early every day. Having a head start before everyone one else and being on step ahead at all times and fully prepared. When others are still sleeping you are already working.
I travelled that road daily for 7 yrs in loaded bdouble. I call bullshit on this its straight up running the truck off the top of the hill in the wrong gear . No hero here in the news story just a knuckle dragger
Memo to the RAA - there used to be 3 lots of "Kitty Litter" / arrester beds - one was REMOVED about 15 years ago, above the one at the tunnels. Was set up on the left hand bend, leading into the Heysen tunnel. Another idea may be to place one at the end of that parking bay, and have it set up as a drive through bed - that may be enough to be able a truck to grab the correct gear if coming down too fast. There is a drive through one on the old road, above Eagle On The Hill. Goes up a steep incline, and the gravel is about 30 odd metres long, then you exit the other side and it brings you out around the left hand bend. It is agreed that two, maybe three extra lots of Kitty Litter do need to be installed between the Union Quarry and Cross / Portrush Road intersection. One could be placed adjacent Mira Monte, with the retaining wall as the backstop, and the other two could be placed either side of the road, just at the start of the descent to the lights past the Tollgate. Both to be made one way - once you are in, the only way out is backwards! Oh, and the steep descent, use low gear needs to be extended to Fullarton Road along Cross Road; Bevington Road / Conyngham Street along Glen Osmond Road; and Greenhill Road along Portrush Road. Those sections of road demand respect, and you also have schools along the 3 roads. Yes, it may add 2 or 3 minutes to a journey, but, what price is a life?
Thanks to that pile of gravel, the B double was able to stop almost instantly, prevent injury and fatality, and the truck looks repairable into the bargain. Was here using an appropriate gear for the conditions though? If not, he will in future.
Before that road starts to descend there's a bloody great sign saying : 1. Get into the inside lane. 2. Get into low gear. 3. Stay under 60. I know nothing about trucks so perhaps somebody that does could explain what's missing from that sign because something clearly is.

Apparently his breaks stopped working and reducing gears did little to help traffic was banking up infront him so it was etiher A. ditch it into the pile Or B. Hit many cars
So.. if this had turned out different.. This head line would be different, and he definitely wouldn't be being praised. Mechanical issues aside, what did he do wrong and, or what is it about this environment that created this situation?
could be a number of things but 0:38 seems like he targeted that fact for some reason, that's probably the suspicion of the police atm but still under investigation.
Well they reckon once the current crop of truckers retire, no one knows how they’re going to replace them . So train em up early, get em in kindy & primary school. Can’t all be in IT.
Given the reduction of lanes due to roadworks on that stretch of road as well as the steep descent, I hope this wasn't caused by dangerous driving. Commendable actions which I hope weren't called for due to initial driver error.
With the exception of a freak crash infront of him being avoided (which didn't happen) It absoloutly had to play a factor. Innapropriate speed, gear or awareness of the conditions or defectable equipment. As a driver, whilst I hate to say this, one of those 4 are the cause.

Big week in the market this week, loads of fundamentals from all over the world that will have a high impact on the market.
Despite the economic crisis, this is still a good time to invest in Gold and Crypto

Investing in Crypto now is the best especially with the current rise in the market now;
