Dodgers lose their entire starting pitching staff ....still win the division. These guys call it a successful season. It's like little league .....participation award. Win the division ....if WC format didn't happen, Pads not in the playoffs the last decade. And btw ...it was a choke. After the season, everyone does a reset and looks at the playoff roster, momentum, etc. The Pads were picked by most "experts" to beat the Dodgers (cause of all the pitching injuries). 2 straight shutouts to end the series (with a bullpen game) is a choke.

What changed? They got too full of themselves and thought they were far superior to the Dodgers. Prematurely.
The problem is they celebrate too early all the time. Last series against the Dodgers regular season they clinched a playoff spot then lost the next two games to them. Up 2/1 to the Dodgers then didn't score against the bullpen and a starter who isn't that good. Pressure got them and they celebrated too early.
To me the definition of choking has nothing to do with how favored a team is to win. It’s when a team or player is one game or one out away from winning the series and fails to do so. So yes, if you ask me, the Padres choked.
Yes, they absolutely choked. Over 80% (if not more) of all baseball/sports shows on TV plus the majority of all baseball podcast shows not only picked the Padres to beat the Dodgers but to win it all. No on gave the Dodgers even half a chance. And if they didn't pick the Padres, it was the Phillies.

They didn’t quit but they definitely choked. Your hitting needs to adapt to the pitching. If they are pitching off the plate all the time which they were, you CLEARLY need to let them walk you. That’s how you force those pitchers to throw more favorable pitches. The padres were swinging most of the pitches. Manny is the prime example. They knew exactly how to pitch to him which was outside the plate. Manny absolutely had multiple chances to realize this and should have taken the walk instead of swinging. That’s called small ball. Walking can change the whole spectrum of the pitcher to batter and they never used that as an option at least in those two games. They definitely used it in the regular season though. Thats changing your offensive fundamentals which is the REAL reason why they lost

How is it not a choke losing to a team with 7 starting pitchers on the IL, their all star 1st baseman on one leg, up 2-1 with a close out game at home and going 24 innings without a run? They essentially got beat down by a bullpen cause all three starters apart from game 5 were getting lit up

How were the Dodgers favored? Almost all their starting pitchers are on the IL, Pads beat them relentlessly all year. Pads had their balls in a vice grip by game 3 and then they totally stopped scoring for 24 innings... That's a choke. No debate needed.

No, the Padres did not choke. They had a period where the bats weren't there. Choking is the Dodgers up 13 game in August 1951 and having to play a playoff game with the Giants, losing that.
Big players show up in big games and moments. The fact that the bats “weren’t there” for two entire critical do or die games is them absolutely choking. They fell under the pressure
