It's just broken. Like me."

George is so charming. Would have been nice to have had a more well-informed interviewer but he made it work. So much great insight, he just draws you in to this completely imaginary world.
His response to the question about birthing a dragon always requiring a human sacrifice seems potentially important... considering what he said earlier in the interview about Valyrians and blood magic.
Phil Hibbs Well it wasn't shown in the show but in the books she sacrifices her unborn child then has nightmares about the loss. So if you think about Drogo dying, the witch dying, and the child dying, then that is 3 bodies/lives, for 3 dragons.
I wish some questions were better and more interesting. This man never fails to spark my interest and make time fly, I could listen to George talk for hours
The interviewer wasn't exactly terrible, but she made me fantasize about how much better the interview would be with someone like comicbookgirl19 - someone with high energy and in-depth knowledge who would go really into detail or into overarching themes instead of wasting time on basic questions like "Who are the Targaryens?"
I have no strong desire to criticize this interviewer too much, but it's quite obvious she has not read a single word of A Song of Ice and Fire. You would think it would be a good idea to get someone (to ask the questions and speak to Martin) who has read at least one book and is familiar with the said books.
Even if she read it she would still not have been good because she's not a real fan. She's reading too much of her notes, doesn't seem to know what the visuals are actually about, and not even enthusiastic considering who she's talking to. She's bland as an interviewer. But that's just me. 😁
He really is. He’s a very open minded human being, sees all sides of faiths & religions, countries & continents, people & their way of life. He isn’t close minded or biased or shut off in anyway. It’s the opposite of how most people believe in one religion & hate others, or believe in no religion & hates all, or this people hates that people because they come from the North or the South etc. He seems to understand all people and why they do what they do right or wrong, he puts that thinking into his characters. It’s why he has some of the most diverse characters, whether it’s the crazy serial killer, the mother who is just trying to protect her children, or the noble man trying to stay good in a cruel world.
I was thoroughly annoyed when she interrupted Martin's story on his version of the Iron Throne because of another slide coming up first. Lady, just skip that one and come back to it after he's done talking.
I think her terrible knowledge of the books of GRRm actually was the best thing for the interview. It kept George on his toes and he tried his best to convey the information he was willing to provide.
Martin is this generations Tolkien. He's inspiring people and giving people joy just like Tolkien has done for generations. Imagine a sit down between these two.
Not really, most people never read his books. They all watched a show that is very loosely based on his characters. Tolkiens Book were read by generations before the three movies came out.
Anna Lena XXX I don't think he works better under force or some threat. Kidnapped him once...and this guy loves to eat. You will end poor before you go to jail.
I love GRRM even more now that I know he's a fan of I Claudius. I Claudius is a fantastic show, brilliant writing, brilliant acting and some great sets, props and costumes, and all in all, it was way ahead of its time. I haven't read the book(s) the show is based on, but I will one day.
Also, Smaug's scales are very hard to chip and you have to find a way underneath to kill him. Dragons can be killed by spears and arrows and swords in GoT
Well, not quite. In ASOIAF, young dragons can be killed by weapons as their scales haven't hardened enough yet. But mature dragons can only be killed by a bolt to the eye. That's probably their only vulnerable spot.
That small detail error that George talked about at the 7 minute mark, the fact that he made this error makes me feel better about being an imperfect writer myself.
When he finaly gets finished, this world will create a miriad af books, games, films, series and any other form of storytelling. What a gift. Thank you George. I can't wait.
No, he wanted to finish his initial thought on the differences between the thrones. The interviewer should have just skipped ahead and then went back. She seemed a bit over her head in this interview, not really a good choice to conduct it...and thats being nice
Herbert Merritt, a professor emeritus at Stanford in Germany living with us for a quarter, was personally well-acquainted with Tolkien. An excellent guy to be around, teaching us linguistics of English and German with a delivery like Hal Holbrook’s Mark Twain. Unfortunately, nobody ever asked him because HOBBIT and LORD OF THE RINGS were unknown to us in the early Sixties.
A magnificent Fantasy based on George’s fantasies... of history of dragons fire, ice, kingdoms, war, dead ice walkers, ........I bought the complete series and I’m watching it for the fourth time and I’m still seeing scenes I managed to miss or not notice the connection to a certain kingdom!! I think this series is fantastically addicting!!! Not I have to buy the these books off Fire and Ice for my coffee table! An awesome series that I will never tire of!!!👌🏻
When he mentioned the valyrians were mage lords, used blood magic, and were based on the roman empire, all I could think of was the tevinter imperium from dragon age. anyone else?
The parallels when he talks about the religion, cathars and the similarities to the 2 equally gods is very interesting "a song of ice and fire" and the perfect balance between ice and fire, Love it
George gives everything a backstory and thats why his books are so popular and interesting, he gives character to a god dam throne, does any other book or movie do that, he talks of things that aren't central to the main focus of his story and gives info and past experienes of characters we only meet for a few pages, it makes it feel like a real world and that there are other things happening other than the main plot, thats what many films and books fail to do is give great detail to ensure there is nothing missed out and the whole creation of this world is included. The characters especially make the books and the show great, they all have motives and all affect the story, there isn't any dead weight, nobody is just in the book because they are cool. They represent something or have a purpose and if not then they aren't talked about or are killed off, keeping irrelevant characters alive or included in the main story makes the reader lose interest, Georges characters offer great detail and motives and a sense of real human characteristics. They show real emotion and conflict within themselves, they are corrupted by power and broken by war. The books literally educate you on how history makes people the way they are, how certain people affect anothers thoughts and actions. The detail just blows me away. Never before has there been so much detail put into a world that does not exist. He is able to make up history that relates to the present time showing how it has affected the timeline and the characters we see today. Thats why he goes down for me as the greatest fantasy writer ever.
Imagine being a nerdy nerd, writing your nerdiness in tomes, and then being invited to talk to the nation on tv channels and shit about your nerdy stuff that you came up with. It is amazing xD
the one thing that's beautiful about this man is that he really wants people t just enjoy his stories from top to bottom and just get immersed with them, and it is annoying it takes like 5, 6 years per book but god they are good
I don't think this lady read the books, she was driving me crazy every time she mispronounced a name and shit. It was still cool to listen to Martin though.
While mispronouncing names and getting thing wrong does annoy me to no end, I think a lot of the time, hosts deserve some slack. Take these people for instance. To find a host, within their company/organization, who could tell apart the sigils of twenty houses would be an impressive feat indeed. They work with what they have a lot of the time.
***** That's almost like asking how somebody would be able know how to pronounce "Harry Potter" correctly since they've only read the name to themselves in a book. They know this by having a high enough reading level, and just saying the word out loud to themselves a few times to see if it sounds as right as it did in their head. I've been reading books my whole life, even The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings while I was in elementary school, so I never really had a problem with mispronouncing stuff (though I'm sure reading books like those before helped). She does deserve some slack, I guess, but she could have easily just looked up those names and other stuff on a smart phone really quick before coming on stage and asking the guest if she is getting stuff right about their story.
Jake Servo I wouldn't say it is at all like being able to pronounce Harry Potter. That's a very obvious example, whereas a good number of the names in asoiaf aren't, same with Tolkien's works too. And I don't feel you using your reading of Tolkien holds much merit either. Firstly, Tolkien puts a pronunciation guide in his books, so there's always that to consider. Secondly, even if you didn't use that guide, I wouldn't believe that you got every pronunciation correctly. You only mentioned the LotR and the Hobbit, but have you read the Silmarillion or the Unfinished tales, or what have you? Let's take some of the Elf lords. Celebrimbor, Celeborn, Cirdan the shipwright. You automatically knew all of them were pronounced with hard 'c' sounds? Lets look far more common examples though. Sauron and Smaug, two extremely recognizable names to Tolkien fans, and even many who aren't. Yet, there is a huge contingency of people who say, 'soron' and 'smog', rather than with the correct 'au', 'ow' sound. If you completely ignored Tolkien's pronunciation guides, then there'd be a good chance you'd screw up pronunciations somewhere. Now back to George's books. There are a hell of a lot of names that could be mispronounced, and are. I know from looking up on the internet that there are a large number of fans shocked to learn that Jaime Lannister is pronounced like the actual name Jamie. So many of the book readers believed it was pronounced 'Jaym'. Then there's a number of the Valyrians, with the common, 'aerys'/'erys' ending to their names. Was it 'air-ees', like the Greek god of war? Or was it 'air-is', a much softer intonation? Then there's Brienne of Tarth, who even in the audio books is mispronounced as 'Bri-een', rather than 'Bree-en'. The name Baratheon is far more commonly pronounced 'ba-rath-e-un', when George himself says, 'ba-rath-e-on'. How about the greatest city that was or ever will be? Some say 'karth', some say 'quarth'. Is Cersei, 'sir-see' or 'sir-say'? Is Stannis, 'stan-iss' or 'staan-iss'? There is a boatload of mispronunciations that could derive from reading the books, and to say a high level of reading alleviates that is frankly wrong. Like you, I read Tolkien when I was very young. When I was nine, The Two Towers was the first book I ever fully read. However, that does not make me invulnerable to mispronouncing things, especially when they're only written and not spoken. We have the benefit of being able to hear a lot of the names in the LotR movies and in GoT, and through audiobooks and interviews given and such, but it's unfair to say anyone who can read well should be able to pronounce things, particularly in this genre of fantasy writing. I would agree with you that people mispronouncing Harry Potter would be odd, but that in no way compares to the names in Tolkien or GRRM's works. As for the very last part of your comment, yes she could have and she very well might have done. However, especially with George's books, there are a lot of names to remember, and I wouldn't put it past someone who's not a crazy fan to make a mistake here and there. After all, there are hundreds of thousands of 'fans' who think Khaleesi is a name, not a title. Sorry for the novel.
I like how he speaks like it's real history. & if I'm being honest, the history of The World Of Ice And Fire is more interesting than the real history. 😃
Real history is falsified. His history probably holds more significance than they bs they feed us lol. And MANY people pay more attention to his world than our world...
Ash It's pronounced either "air-ee" or "ee - ree" George is pronouncing it wrong lol. I mean, I guess he can say it's pronounced differently in his world if he wants to, but it's a real word, and it seems like he's using it in the real world sense given that the eyrie is on a high perch like a bird's nest.
troliolol lol Well I mean, you're talking about a world he created entirely, so whatever he says or however he pronounces things is right. Your point is like telling the parents of a child that the way they pronounce their child's name is wrong because you and other people pronounce it differently. The child's name is pronounced however the parents intended it to be pronounced.
Ash I literally said EXACTLY what you just said in my original post, so I'm not sure why you're repeating it back to me. "I mean, I guess he can say it's pronounced differently in his world if he wants to, but it's a real word, and it seems like he's using it in the real world sense "
troliolol lol You didn't though because thats not what your point says. He is talking about his world being Westeros, that he created. He's pronouncing it his way, which is in fact that correct way no matter how its pronounced otherwise. Whether its a real world or not is irrelevant when we're talking about Georges world. And your point said 'But it's a real word, and it seems like he's using it in the real world sense' which is justifying that its got multiple pronunciations. Hes not talking about real life, hes talking about ASOIAF and so am I and in that world its pronounced however he says it is. The point you made, the way you worded it, does not defend my point, it is in fact against my point. The point I made defends my own so how can it be 'EXACTLY' what you said when you justified it having various pronunciations and I didn't.
+Guy Guino it's a bit like she's stoned clean out lol but maybe she's just one of those people, my science teacher would put you to sleep with his tone but it was soothing af
I agree probably one of the few scenes that was great yet not from the source material. I’m wondering how it’ll be presented since Bran & company already are in with the Children of the Forest
This guy knew Hodor's origins the moment he wrote the character into the book series.I'm half convinced that he's written the major plot points of the entire book series already, He just goes back and drops in clues to things surrounding the storyline in future books and then fills in the gaps. I'm convinced he's left clues for Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring in Dunc and Egg and The World of Ice and Fire. There are multiple occasions of characters having dreams and things for events that happen 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 books later. How could he already know that's how characters were going to die? Unless he'd already written it and already reached an end game. The time between each books is literally him filling in the gaps and giving us clues. George RR Martin is an absolute genius. When we are all old people there will be massive discussions about his books and the themes of them much like people discuss Shakespeare in Modern day.
I’d like to see a lengthy interview with GRRM though rather with a host who has a deep knowledge of his world, whom knows how to pronounce characters names at the least
She's obviously done no research... Since George has answered most of these questions a number of times before... Especially the one about the idea behind The Wall.. FFS you could even see how disappointed he was when she asked that question.
Dennis Reynolds Might be known by some, but not well known. And she might have known where he got the idea, but she wanted to ask him so he would open up his creative process to make up an interesting interview in which she partly failed if the question is often repeated as you said. I wonder why they don't get real fans of the book series to interview GRRM.
Imagine how many years this guy lived in obscurity. Everyone telling him to get things together and now he's one of the most sought after authors int he world. Take a moment George enjoy it you've earned it.

His response to the question about birthing a dragon always requiring a human sacrifice seems potentially important... considering what he said earlier in the interview about Valyrians and blood magic.
CatAtomic99
Yep
CatAtomic99 considering that drogo was on the pyre with dany and the eggs, it might also be necessary that its kings blood that is sacrificed
derpman909 Yes, and she also burned the witch alive in that same pyre.
WhoIsPine A witch who had worked with Marwin of the Citadel.
Phil Hibbs Well it wasn't shown in the show but in the books she sacrifices her unborn child then has nightmares about the loss. So if you think about Drogo dying, the witch dying, and the child dying, then that is 3 bodies/lives, for 3 dragons.
1:23:11 he addresses the hodor situation so calmly knowing that shit is a banger as plot twist 😭this man is the GOAT
"the catholics refutet this argument by killing them all" ^^ gotta love george
I wish some questions were better and more interesting.
This man never fails to spark my interest and make time fly, I could listen to George talk for hours
The interviewer wasn't exactly terrible, but she made me fantasize about how much better the interview would be with someone like comicbookgirl19 - someone with high energy and in-depth knowledge who would go really into detail or into overarching themes instead of wasting time on basic questions like "Who are the Targaryens?"
Oh man, GRRM interviewed by CBG19... now that would be an awesome 90 minutes.
I'm guessing that's a youtuber? Ugh.
Prejudiced against youtubers? Ugh.
Fennecbutt
A UA-camr with a great ASOIAF lore series and GOT commentary.
Based on the hair she might be Tyroshi.
AnkokuEvangeline CBG19 interviewing GRRM = awesome! How can we fund this? Or make it happen anyhow?
His words would be "The Winds of Winter is Coming."
George of House Martin.
House Words: This is your favourite character? Good to know.
Winter is coming but the Winds aren't
*are coming.
Haha yeah
Lol
i love how humble and real he is. i can totally picture him while writing these books haha.
I have no strong desire to criticize this interviewer too much, but it's quite obvious she has not read a single word of A Song of Ice and Fire. You would think it would be a good idea to get someone (to ask the questions and speak to Martin) who has read at least one book and is familiar with the said books.
I imagined she had to replace someone at the last minute or something
Even if she read it she would still not have been good because she's not a real fan. She's reading too much of her notes, doesn't seem to know what the visuals are actually about, and not even enthusiastic considering who she's talking to. She's bland as an interviewer. But that's just me. 😁
@@mariesia0525 Yeah she's such a downer, goddamn.
I could listen to this man for hours on end. Great to see new stuff from this briliant man.
I could listen to this forever
What a wonderful human! I absolutely love how he essentially hired top fans to keep track of his mythology. Humble and wise!
George's laugh just makes my day brighter😂
Martin has such an unbiased way of thinking and talking
01:22:50 "How did you decide on the name Hodor"
If only I had known at the time.
"How'd you come up with the name Hodor." That smile. He knew!
He has such a great laugh.
She annoyed me
It's an interview.... she's supposed to get him to talk about it ....
@36:57 I love how he makes even simple, throw away stories interesting. Truly a master of story telling.
GoT is so popular, that George must have fears of being kidnapped
danny spoon yes we will kidnapp him to finish the books xD
+Anna Lena XXX But he will do that at home too.
But not quick enaugh :`(
Anna Lena XXX I don't think he works better under force or some threat. Kidnapped him once...and this guy loves to eat. You will end poor before you go to jail.
XD you might have a point there :)
***** I will heed that advise, thank you. I will probably order the book this week in fact...
"Yes, this character you killed three books ago." hahahaha
Also, Smaug's scales are very hard to chip and you have to find a way underneath to kill him.
Dragons can be killed by spears and arrows and swords in GoT
Ya because his stories have a little more practicality. I can tell your strong suit isnt comprehension right?
@Rushabh @PolloLeche wow you guys are salty
Well, not quite. In ASOIAF, young dragons can be killed by weapons as their scales haven't hardened enough yet. But mature dragons can only be killed by a bolt to the eye. That's probably their only vulnerable spot.
Or they can be killed by other dragons or by falling debris or by a really determined mob of Kings Landing small folk…
I would have done a better job interviewing :') George was great though, very interesting. Might have to buy the book!
I could listen to this man forever
I was on page 188 of "The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones" when I found this video.
That small detail error that George talked about at the 7 minute mark, the fact that he made this error makes me feel better about being an imperfect writer myself.
31:41 You're thinking Of Daeron Targaryen! LMAO AngryGotFan never dissapoints
I just love this guy. George RR Martin is my hero.
Hands down he is best fantasy writer ever! Living legend!
John Tolkien is the guy. But George comes between the greatest.

What a gift. Thank you George. I can't wait.

He gets so impatient to talk about the Iron Throne. "Yeah Dragonstone whatever. Let's talk about that throne."
No, he wanted to finish his initial thought on the differences between the thrones. The interviewer should have just skipped ahead and then went back. She seemed a bit over her head in this interview, not really a good choice to conduct it...and thats being nice
There is something about this man that always gives me major ASMR tingles when I hear him talking
I, Claudius is where he drew inspiration from? Wow, that's amazing. That show was great! (I saw on DVD, phenomenal acting.)
"Brother marrying sister... and nephew marrying aunt.. and so forth" he's foreshadowing Jon and Daenarys
They are not the first, you know.
Alex Wilcox It would be better if those two turned out to be cousins & a more accepted couple even by today’s Westerosi standards.
@@shannond7437 i think it’s even better that they are nephew and aunt, it adds more conflict and more pushback because of their familiar relation.
Wow, this truly is a brilliant man
Herbert Merritt, a professor emeritus at Stanford in Germany living with us for a quarter, was personally well-acquainted with Tolkien.
An awesome series that I will never tire of!!!👌🏻
I could listen to this man for hours.
love the Ozymandias reference to the Iron Throne.
“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings; look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Great quote. I too loved how he quoted that.
When he mentioned the valyrians were mage lords, used blood magic, and were based on the roman empire, all I could think of was the tevinter imperium from dragon age. anyone else?
Yes!!
Lets get some books about the Kings of Winter!

Hello. I'm Joan Callamezzo: legendary news woman, here to talk about the World of Ice and Fire. This is my guest George Roald Dahl Martin.
I brought this book and it's great! The art work is amazing
Imagine being a nerdy nerd, writing your nerdiness in tomes, and then being invited to talk to the nation on tv channels and shit about your nerdy stuff that you came up with.
It is amazing xD
the one thing that's beautiful about this man is that he really wants people t just enjoy his stories from top to bottom and just get immersed with them, and it is annoying it takes like 5, 6 years per book but god they are good
"I do like cold weather" omg I love him I love him
I don't think this lady read the books, she was driving me crazy every time she mispronounced a name and shit.
***** That is a very good point. :P
WTF is she doing with this interview. They should have found someone knowligable with ASIOF.
I like how he speaks like it's real history. & if I'm being honest, the history of The World Of Ice And Fire is more interesting than the real history. 😃
Real history is falsified. His history probably holds more significance than they bs they feed us lol. And MANY people pay more attention to his world than our world...
I could listen to George talk for hours upon hours
I could listen to George R. R. Martin talk about stuff and worldbuilding for hours.
43:15 holy shit guys ive been saying eyrie wrong this whole time!?
Ash mmmkay, I'm not going to waste my time reading that essay or talking to you any more. You're pretty obnoxious.
Wow the host seemed really uninterested.

1:22:55 "Why is he called Hodor? I don't know, you have to keep reading..."
From 2020... please do... one of the best moments of the entire show...
I agree probably one of the few scenes that was great yet not from the source material. I’m wondering how it’ll be presented since Bran & company already are in with the Children of the Forest
I always love his sincerity in answering interview questions.
These are the podcasts I'd like to watch
Lew Lew great, great comment. so true, and explained so simply and perfect. I 100% agree.

George RR Martin is so interesting! I could listen to him talk all day, even with an interviewer like this.
WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT DID HE JUST SAY RUN A GAME! I love getting inspiration by running D&D games in my book universe.
Dennis Reynolds I've never heard the story about the idea behind the wall before and it was one of the most interesting things in this interview.
WTF 7 Well it's been known since before the show was even picked up... Sick of hearing that question and so is Martin, it seems.
WTF 7 Cause we would have bias-based question on our own assumptions.
"So at that point my editors exploded."
"I know Jan is somewhere in the audience, I recognize her by her exploded head."
LMAO GRRM IS FUNNY AS FUCK
