  • Hi guys, welcome to another episode of Mix it up May. Inspired by the amazing new idea-logy release from Mr. Tim Holtz, I am on a mission to recreate my own paper folders and folios on a budget. Using different types of paper that I have at home and minimal supplies,
I'm diving into the world of DIY papercrafting. As a passionate papercrafter, I believe that half the fun is making these creations myself. Not only will this save us a lot of money, but it will also bring us immense joy.

I also don’t tend to purchase TH crafting supplies, however I recently watched one of his product videos by accident and I now have a HIGE amount of respect for him and no longer have a problem buying his products (if I decide it’s really what I want) because he actually encourages making it yourself and only getting his products if you are doing a mixed media thing or have problems with your hands or things like that. Just throwing that out there.

I also love your accent, and it was while watching this that I figured out why. When I was a teenager, I used to volunteer at our local library, and the librarian was a beautiful, warm, funny, and practical Dutch lady. Lovely memories. 😁

Funny Story - I had just purchased ALL of Tim's Folios/Booklets- but only as templates/patterns so I could copy/reconstruct on my own. I use to do a lot of sewing ages ago and I ALWAYS needed a pattern LOL
BUT to have YOUR explaining and fashioning right here in my crafty spot is GOLD! I ADORE you and your channel!

I’ve been doing this craft since the 1980s but it wasn’t “junk journaling” yet. Mr. Tim Holtz had the foresight to see a market, lucky duck. It’s more fun to are these things but I totally understand others wanting to buy them ready made. I have learned some new tricks watching your channel so many many thanks. I love your humor. Happy crafting

Morning Margreth, l always attributed my wish to create things from scratch down to my creativity. Now l see that it’s more likely to be because of my Dutch heritage 😅 Thank you for sharing these projects. I love them. They absolutely speak to my frugal, Dutch heart.

So many creators are featuring the new Tim Holtz releases right now but I am drawn to your ideas of using the products as inspiration for making our own materials. I had lots of fun making collage strips like your previous video! You bring back the creativity vs just acquiring new things. Also, I am a little bored with seeing all the same little paper dolls, “old” photos, etc. that are immediately identifiable as TH in everyone’s work. Much more fun to create it ourselves!❤

Hello from Canada. I do not purchase Tim Holtz products as I think that they are overpriced. I make my own "Tim Like" items to save money and I do not have to pass the cost on to my customers who purchase my journals. And, you can make them in different colors!!!! Thank you for the inspiration.

    • @hl7774
      @hl7774 29 днів тому +1

The sad thing is he can charge so much because people are willing to pay it. I'm sure at this point he has his manufacturers that charge a fraction of the cost to make them so his profit line is huge. Not that I'm knocking the guy his business. Good for him for making his millions. If we all could, we would. But then when you stop and think that a lot of stuff he doesn't even design himself but instead pays other artists for their images and then he just slaps his name on it and BAM! $20+ product.
I've stopped running out and buying every color and every stamp as those were my two vices and now try to stick to a handful of go to colors and just buying the re inkers when needed but I'm always on the lookout for diy tim products/alternatives (like Margreth's collage strips I never bought but will now make!). So it's cool that you've found ways to do the same. I think if less people bought items and the consensus was price, maybe they'd think twice on pricing and the man would still make money. But not the world we live in. For the best I suppose or I would just keep amassing additional supplies I don't really need.

Like you, I love all things Tim Holtz, including Tim himself. What I’ve found with his products are that he gives us different ways to accomplish the same things. For instance, we can use a piece of his pre-made paper or make something similar with his stencils, stamps and inks. He had the matchbook boxes in the Ideaology line. They’re gone but we have the option of buying a die to make them. I like the convenience of some of his pre-made products but have learned through you, Toni and Wendy’s Journal Adventure, that I can make most everything I need. Love the versatility of this art/craft form. Great video!

Great video, dear Margreth, you nailed it... I do also prefer crafting this by myself... but I can understand someone who just wants to decorate the item itself and does not want to be bothered with the mechanics etc. (for whatever reason), and I think they are grateful for these items and therefore it is great you can purchase them. Other crafters dive into the project from toe to head (probably vice versa😁) , like to figure out the mechanics and blueprints and are not scared to lay the groundwork, so to say, spending hours with the (eventually?) less fun part of crafting before turning to decorating etc. I think you could compare it to convenience food to which you can add some spices instead of cooking the whole meal with ALL ingredients and spices chosen by yourself.... and like Mr. Holtz always says: You Do You.... I am looking forward to friday❤

It was good to see you do your versions of Tim’s pieces. Looking forward to Friday. I had another look at the live and saw that the accordion file is made from just one single piece of paper giving 8 panels without glue so that was impressive and it is the heavy mixed media paper. Although none of the makers used both sides of the accordion which was a pity. Still I’d like to see your take. I’ve always used the joins to make top loading or side loading pockets. See you Friday. 😊

Thank you for making this video. Although I currently have no use for these items, I greatly appreciate that you took the time to show us how to make these. It seems like lately more and more youtubers are buying every new item that comes out and although I'm currently blessed with the ability to buy them if I so wish, to just amass so much stuff just because of the excitement of new items... I have to start telling myself no. 😞
For the people who get some sort of commission from people buying products, by all means, make that coin! But I'm finding myself more and more disappointed when I have a collection of stamps (for example) that have been bought for one specific project and are now just sitting there unused. Or when a mixture of brands are used and i don't have all of them because some may just not be my aesthetic and then I'm left with not knowing how to fill that hole because I don't have something similar in a style I do have. My mind creates those blocks.
I really wish I had the ability to just look at my stuff and put them together like a puzzle but it always seems like I'm trying to fit a square peg in a round hole then I get frustrated and give up on the project.
Plus if I had this ability then I wouldn't need to come watch Margreth's beautiful mind at work! 😁 and let's face it, sometimes I just want to copy a project exactly as is because that's what attracted me to it in the first place!
So again, I truly, truly appreciate a video that says if you really want to, then get it but just know it's not an absolute necessity and let me show you how to make it yourself. Or, as an alternative, let's work with what we already have! Because at this point, at the very least we all probably have a few of the same go to stamp sets, punches, and inks. 🙈

Smart! The hole on the coin pocket could go from the bottom and be lower, it should clear the fold up flap. The booklet folio I think is sewn into the eyelets instead of slip in? I think could be wrong but it looked like some of the makes we’re stitched to the spine? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Still I love seeing how I can make these not buy them. Thank you for all the tedious work with measurements!!!! 💚🖤💚

    Look forward to Friday.
If something is made no matter who is the creator there are ways to make similar and I do like your version ❤

Good Morning Margreth! Thank you for saving us money by making these beauties from scratch! I love yours more!! I was wondering if you punched the circle on the coin envelope at the bottom with the flappy turned up if that would center the circle? Doesn’t matter! It’s so cute anyway. Can’t wait to see the next one.

Your's is definitely better. You could have maybe cut the hole from envelope from the bottom. It would then sit lower down, but how you did everything was way better. Sending greetings from New Zealand

I have being struggling so much with this. I love the 3d projects i love the pre-made stuff and the mixed media stuff also but i dont have the budget to always buy the big brand stuff and certainly not all off everything.and for the longest time it felt i was miss out because all the cool peeps..well..also quality wise if i did re made my self something i was always doubting. This helps me to feel it a even bit more less then yesterday😊thanks

This is fabulous. I especially enjoyed the last one where you managed to hide the seam. I had never considered doing that before. Woot! Can't wait for Friday.

My goodness this is a fantastic tutorial, you could hardly tell one from the other. Indefinitely want to make some of these. I've got some heavy duty lining paper(wall paper) so am going to try the the accordion folio without seams. It's not as tough as card stock but I think once it's decorated that will strengthen everything. Thank you so much for all your fabulous videos! Best papercrafting creator on youtube😃

You can use an envelope maker. It has a notch punch. 😀😂

I purchased them to use as a template to make others. The measurements make my head hurt. Lol
