Randy, Filming a review in your car is great! You could do a review in a gas station bathroom and I'd watch the whole thing! This vid just proves your dedication to the cause. Thanks CAM!! Two Thumbs Up!
Still rocking my original HE-400 pair from 10+ years ago. They were my first planar and my introduction to hifi. Their connectors suck, they have the weight and comfort of a brick, and I had to threadlock pretty much everything on it that could possibly come unscrewed. They're the cheapest headphones I have, but despite all that they're still part of the collection of headphones on my desk and I will never get rid of them. They're still my go- to favorite headphones when I'm looking to have *fun* listening to lively music. A perfect example of cheap and old still being awesome =)
I love my Hifiman HE400SE. The cable you got must have been upgraded version because the one I have is thin stiff crappy silver one but got a FAAEAL cable off of Amazon which is great improvement. Loving the gas station stop review format.
Nice review Randy. These are my main cans for use in headphone listening. I run them off of a Monolith all tube headphone amp(sadly no longer available)and I haven't been bothered by excess sibilance. Maybe it the tubes or it just might be my ear/brain combo but I haven't noticed it. I do like them a little more than the Drop 6xx on this setup. Thanks for the wonderful channel and drive safe out there.
I love my HE400SE. I drive them with an iFi Zen Dac V2 via the balanced output. I find it plenty power for this headphone although I get adding more power will only make it better. Luckily the Zen Dac tames the high end nicely.
I've got the he4x's and the zen dac v2, great combo, I've heard the 400se also on the zen dac, definitely a step up from the 4x, and now they're $107, makes me wanna get them too, we'll see...
Ya thanks I'll keep an eye out, just bought the r7dx for $100 with the zeos coupon, sending them back cuz I think I got a bad pair. If the replacement pair sounds good then I'll keep them, if not then I'll probably try the 4000se. Still wanna go with the edition xs but $500 is just too much right now.
I pulled my SR80's out, saw the ear pads were completely deteriorated, and the realized I can't plug them into anything anymore because everything is Bluetooth.
I just got 400se from a friend who listened to them for about a month and didn't fell in love with their signature. She sold me those for around 80 bucks, and I'm... Re-listening everything xD Those came with a better cable than the initial run. Paired them with FiiO e10k-tc, and fortunately it's enough to power them. E10k-tc goes 200mw to 32 ohms, plenty loud for me personaly.
I have ATH AD500x and they're my first "hi fi". I did get the. 9500s after multiple reviews as well as modded T50-RPs. Only problem now is I feel there's no true upgrades unless I go >$300. I wanted thee but I'll wait. Thanks for you review! Saved me some dough to figure out my next buy. Plus I am loving your reviews!
Hi! I have ATH AD500x and they're my first "hi fi", too! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. Maybe in a week come my HE400SE v2, if you want, i will tell you about my impressions later. (MT-602 AMP) Greetings.
@@clockcycle i have the AD500X. I had (for a while) the 400se v2, too. The Hifimans (if you have a good amp) have better sound, a level up. But they are heavy, their headband sucks. The AD500X are very good headphones, (better for FPS games), very much comfortable, light. Now i have the AKG 702, too.
I just realized this hobby is probably like a lot of others in a way: the more you get into it, the more you learn, the less satisfied you get with stuff, specifically at the low end. When you get started you think, "These Grado headphones are only $89?! They're AMAZING!!" Four years later you're like, "Don't get me wrong. The Meze Empyrean are great. I just think they're overly warm in the bass presentation for a $3,000 headphone. I just think you can get better bass in an open back headphone in the $3k-$5k category."
@@pillowboy7995 I'm surprised at how much money people spend on things that I would consider an unnecessary luxury. I think some people obviously just make a whole lot of money. Others spend way too much on things that are just fun. Older people who are well established can have good jobs, get paid the most they ever will in their careers, low monthly expenses, and a desire to reward themselves. Those guys can release afford to spend ten times what I can, even though they're in similar careers. Other people spend a fortune on something like a pair of headphones, but that's where all of their spare cash goes, and outside of that they are extremely frugal. Some people get money from rich parents or friends. But I think a lot of HiFi nerds buy fancy expensive gear and later sell it. I think a lot of HiFi dudes have gone through hundreds of thousands worth of gear, but slowly committed only about the price of a car on it over the years because they keep turning it over, buying and selling, sometimes new, but often used, and the total value of their purchases is really only what they have in their home, which I would guess is usually about $30k worth of stuff when it was new, but they buy used and trade up, and I'm the end only about half of that value was ever handed over in cash. If you look today, you could probably put together a $50k retail price system that's ten years old and used for about $10k or $15k if you really hunt for it. Last but not least, I think a lot of people exaggerate. They hear something at a store or a friend's house, or borrow something for two weeks, and for the rest of their lives they act like they owned it for a decade. I'm solidly mid-tier and love every minute of it. I rarely spend more than $200 on anything, and that's only once every five years or so. I do spend a hundred or two on things every year or so. My economy car expenses far outweigh my HiFi budget, and I'm not particularly interested in cars.
There is a recommended notch mod one can do to improve the headband pressure on the top. Put strips of cardbord on both sides of the headband and put a pinch on the top part for 10-12hours.Think Sennheiser notch.. That creates a soft notch in the stuffing to reduce a hotspot the top of your head. You can also put a big box between the earcups for siimiliar amount of time to decrease the clamping force.I recommend doing this without the pads though. This headphone is good for music but not gaming, the sound is not very directional in these. I use Peace equalizer with a notch in brakeup frequency removing the sibiliance. I use onlinetonegenerator and with a sweep going and you quickly hear the brakeup freq getting louder. Then I use a steep notch at that frequency and the sibiliance and cymbals errors are gone.
Just came back from CanJam NYC and ordered a pair of those for $109. Very nice. Comfortable, great sound. Light. I heard some amazing stuff but the ones in my price range were this and a pair still a bit steep I loved. The Audio-Technica ATH-R70x Professional Open-Back. Maybe I'll see what they for for used.
I'm still happy with my 1983's Stax SRM-1/MK-2 Pro earspeakers, bought back then for USD $500, the best sounding and most expensive headphone on the market at that time. So my point is: do not buy cheap, because you will eventually lose twice. Instead, for the long time enjoyment purchase the best sounding audio equipment you can afford. Now, I'm dreaming for Stax-SR-X9000 Electrostatic Headphones, unfortunately out of my reach now ! I own Luxman L-550AX Integrated amp, Quad ESL-63 (used), REL 212/SE sub, OPPO UDP-205, Yamaha NP-S2000, Denon DP-67L, JVC TD-V711, TEAC X-2000R, and Sennheiser HD 800S. So, I'm not exactly cheap audio man, but my system sound wonderful! Randy, you may be right, JBL Studio 530 (on sale for $240) sound as good as ESL-63 (one of the best speaker ever). But the same speakers powered by Adcom GFA-535 ($300) did not sound even close to the Luxman class A (20 W). Is it worth to spend more? Definitely. Good luck!
When I bought my Deva I noticed the treble was a bit sharp, but not too sharp. After a while of listening and thus breaking them in, that became much better. I suspect those will become better too
@@cheapaudioman I don't know exactly when I got to the point when the sound stopped getting even better. I only ran them when in use, which is about 8hrs a day, seems like a month of use, might have been even more. Never 8 hours in one go, few hours at a time. With rest in between. Going to deva pro soon, current deva going to my son 😁
I just got these and paired em with a GSX1000, I know it's not the best but I love and use the features alot especially the music mode that gives me the bass when ever I'm feeling like a bass head lol and 7.1 for gaming. I have them at 70 which is enough for me. I'll probably get a separate amp later down the line but for just starting out into this audiophile world I absolutely love these headphones.
You should probably listen to these through a proper amp and do another review. You'll get excellent instrument separation, cleaner sound and no sibilance, plus you can appreciate the bass response. These are very low distortion headphones, what you're hearing is probably from your dongle dac that isn't designed to drive low impedance planars. They actually have smoother highs than the Sundaras and deeper bass, though they lack a little bit in the upper mids so female vocals feel a little recessed. I think that's their only flaw.
Great! I found someone that is never annoying, has the same geeky cool ass, high on life, nature loving, maniac as I Now, you are second only pee and prayers. We hook up about 10 hours a day. Man, it's great to finally grow up, be grateful for good and bad. Too bad it's taken 60 years Life's finally making perfect sense. Thank you
One of these days I’m going to check out a planar, but I’m with you, sibilance is a deal breaker for me. So maybe XS one day. Did you see a White Castle on the way? You said fast food and I starting Jonesing😊
I’m a little late to the party on this one, but I wanted to say that I have the Drop HE-X4, which is almost identical to the HE400SE, and I can drive mine fine with the Qudelix 5K
I have the Sundaras, and they are a great headphone. They do like a lot of power, though, as you say. Not a problem with my PS Audio Stellar Gain Cell DAC. Drives them effortlessly!
7:20 "I love fast food." *Car shakes* lol Honestly between the sibilance and the inefficiency, I'm feeling a lot better about spending the extra money for the Sennheiser HD560S.
I had a pair of the HD560S, but they were so polite I returned them The sound is clean but it doesn't have the balls of a planar headset. It's like dumping your quiet religious girlfriend and going out with a crazy German chick.
@@wrinkleneckbass At the moment I'm enjoying the HD's for other types of music. However, I'm going to get another headset for music that's bass heavy. Why dump a gf when you can just add another and start a headset harem instead lol.
I don't know Chief, with the price of gas these days we're way out of the world of cheap. But then if I don't have to drive to buy my HE400SE, we're good. BTW, I've had a pair of Hifiman HPs for several years and their GREAT! Thanks for the in-car review.
As per usual I'm late to the party again... After 40+ years of listening to music through dynamic driver headphones - I have no qualms about many that I used. The deal breaker for me this week was noticing little black bits on my shirts and my desk, turns out the "pleather" ear pads are pealing - the pleather is peeling off itself, like a bad retread tire - and no way to replace the pads on the headphones. This is my first dive into planar magnetic headphones. I chose this specific pair because (a) great reviews (b) price, money's tight these days (c) Hifiman planar magnetic headphones... the name speaks for itself IMO. I'm currently running all sound through on-board motherboard sound via 3.5mm - RCA input (Fosi Audio T20 tube amplifier) and 3.5mm out to a pair of Tascam TH06. Purchasing these headphones is the first step into upgrading from the Fosi Audio amplifier to either a Topping MX3 or an SMSL AO300 headphone DAC/ amp.
Love me the CX9. However I’m biased since I have worked in Mazda parts for 5 years 🤣. However we put our money where our mouth is, we have owned a CX5 for a while.
I've had these for a few months. I wanted a planar pair to compare to my dt990s, I use a schiit magni/modi stack and sometimes an xduoo mt 02 hybrid tube amp. I like how the 400se sound more technical and controlled. For a new budget set up, these are a no brainer but I still prefer the dt990s for jazz and vocals. Love the vids man, always honest and you actually talk about stuff I can afford!
@@brentt8940 400se are better for bassy electronic music and the DT990s are better for older rock and acoustic music. I bought both because they're very different from each other.
Is it worth it? No, all you need is a pair of HD600 Sennheiser. But I think a headphone "collection" would be incomplete without a pair of beyerdynamic and a Hifiman.
Good entry level planar, with a bit of low bass boost EQ you can experience the clean deep planar bass. A bit wonky and a slight hole in the upper middle can make vocals funny, some treble resonance that causes more of a hashiness or fine grittiness than sibilance. Wouldn't compare to a Grado though, Grados have less low bass, smoother midbass and mids, much brighter upper mids and then some have splashy upper treble, some don't. If you can find a phone with a good 3.5mm output (mine has 2 battery arrangement and goes comfortably loud) or a good laptop (MacBook etc) should drive them directly fine, otherwise a small high current amp works well, tubes also, since planar has very flat impedance.
Nice review. Could you do a review of the AKG K 612 Pro and, if possible, compare it with AKG K 712 Pro? 04:44 I use my HE400se with xDuoo MT-602, and it drives them perfectly well with 1.3W @ 32 ohms. 06:41 xDuoo XD-05 Basic is a good portable option to drive it.
Bro you are welcome to Missouri south of the STL area to review a Marantz PM6006 integrated amplifier, NR1200 stereo receiver and CD5005 CD player. And i got 2 of your faves to test on sony sscs5 and elac debut 2.0 b6.2!! Plus if you are a fan of cannabis i usually have straight fire flower concentrate and some gummies.
I have owned the HE400se for several months, and wanted to add a very relative comment. With dongle dacs, even balanced, the 400se’s were sibilant, lacked any substantial bass, and were really not great. As soon as plugged them into a THX888 desktop headphone amp that supplies loads of power, the sound completely changed. Thee sibilance vanished, the bass filled out very nicely, and they were just an entirely different class of headphone. I see they upgraded the cable that they supplied with them, which they really needed to. The one they shipped with mine was the worst headphone cable I had ever seen.
Ya I've seen that older cable, horrible. And yes a real headphone amp brings out the best in my he4x's, way better than the dongle dac I have, fiio btr3k
Randy, ive been using this headphones for over 8 months now, just started paying attention to the sibilence (i think its only based on your comments X)..) . No real complaints on the heaphones. Ive been using these with the Aiyima T8 which crapped out on me twice and so i recently got a Topping DX30pro+. I wish the T8 was working right now to compare the two since i have the feeling it made for just slightly better sound, though it lacked a bit of power.
Great review man. Can I ask, do you think these would be good with classical music please? I need detail, separation and soundstage. And nothing too bright. Thanks very much indeed
Those are slightly cheaper than my Grado sr80x...same open design. I have no complaints about the sound of my Grados, but the cables where reinforced to deal with weak cables on the sr80e, and they went to far
Everybody seems to love the Hifiman Edition XS. How do they compare to the Ananda? I have the 4XX, Sudara, and the Ananda. Should I get the Edition XS as well?
Considering your selection of Hifiman headphones, I think getting the XS would be a side-grade purchase. Perhaps you could experiment with pad swapping. I've heard that Dekoni's Fenestrated Sheepskin Pads pair very nicely with the Ananda, providing improved clarity and a larger soundstage.
I use those 80 dollar Sony Headphones at Walmart for work. They work and have ok noise canceling… for work. I wear these things all day and sleep with them on most of the time. I’m a non headphone audiophile who uses them nearly 24 hour a day. Go figure. Yes I even had them on doing that as well:)
Hey Randy, I have 93db planars and use the ibasso d04 balanced dongle. It drives my headphones very well, volume control goes to 63, over 32 is too loud for me.
Got these because, $100, why not try them? Straight from my PC I was unimpressed. I had a $50 Nobosound NS-08 'tube' headphone amp that was gifted to me and I never needed with other headphones. Figured, why not, and wow. These went from, 'no thanks' to 'uhh... hell yeah!' I like them better than my open back Grado SR125. The Hifiman seems to really bring forward the guitar in rock. Comparing these to $400 Master & Dynamic open back, I would not have bought the M&D if I had these first. Oh yeah. 621 miles gets me from west Texas, to east Texas... 0 state changes.
Randy I bought Yamaha YH-E700 headphones 🎧 last Black Friday sale normally $500 but where $250 !!! Mate I listened to most headphones in my $250 dollar budget range and most where garbage 🗑 !!! 😜👍🇦🇺
A review from the road, the first I've ever seen, congrats! On the other hand, is it wise to drive and listening to music with headphones? Too distracting, in my humble opinion! Nice video though!
@@cheapaudioman Thanks Mr. Randy, I absolutely had no intention of being a pain nor to give unwanted advice but I was glad to read your reply! 100K before the end of this coming week? I'll bet you will, maybe by mid week! I am not a headphone guy, but recently I bought the Grado SR 80X, the one you hate to love, if I remember well. It works for me but I need to buy a longer extension cable to be able to sit in my comfy chair.
I just got these a few weeks ago when they went on sale. They do need power, Pixel 2 dongle barely has any volume. There is a Mayflower ARC MK2 used close to me. Would that pair well with HE400SE?
Got them yesterday for about 60$. They got a lot more issues: unrealistic timbre, a too short decay in the treble, narrow soundstage, honkiness (too much 800hz). True, some of those can be eq'ed
Dear gods man, you’re talking about $100.00 headphones. Do you have a recommendation for headphones in this same price range that sound better? I’d genuinely love to know, so I, and other consumers can consider those. Instead of just finding fault, give us an alternative.
@@rickbrookes9491 you may like them. depends on your ears, taste, genre. i like a more realistic headphone which 400se is not. if eq'ed and played very loud, they become enjoyable. still not good but enjoyable. i have a pair of AKG 712 Pro bought used for the same price as new 400 and they are muuuuch better for my ears
@@5ChSP2UxVtswQh-Znzkpbg Luxman speaker amp (tested also on Loxjie headphone amp, Sony speaker amp. JVC speaker amp with similar results). To be honest i still listen to them. Eq'ed and played loud they are very enjoyable even if not accurate.
They need to make these more comfy, the weight is not making them something I want to use for long. Btw, a soundcard like Creative Labs AE-5 (plus) or 7 and above can easily drive these cans.
@@epicmike3915 the first month of me using them was bad, headband was biting the crown of my scalp. Month 5+: headband has softened and I can now feel the weight distributed evenly, and sometimes I forget it's resting there. Let the headband soften over time. It will get better.
I really like the ideas of the hifiman deva-pros (especially the R2R dac), but qc and a few other usability issues (especially battery life) have kept me from pulling the trigger.
Got mine in yesterday, been spending some time with them . So far not very impressed with them ,I put my 35 bucks worth of earbuds in and it's by a good margin outdoing the hifiman ... I will try s dedicated headphone amp next, if that doesn't wake them up ?! They will be returned
If you have the he400s then don't bother buying this. I tried both and they sound the same. But the he400se is harder to drive than the he400s, also less comfortable because of the headband change, and the frequency response only goes to 25,000 hz instead of 35,000 hz for the he400s.
I bought these 400SEs as an intro to planar and open back. The 100ish mW from the Loxjie A30 seems adequate. Also HiFiMan was including a crappy cable set until recently, seems like they listened to the feedback (Z reviews gave them an earful!) which is great. I'm happy with them so far, open back is still weird for me though getting used to it!
I have both and prefer Hifiman, I think the bas for instance sounds cleaner. But the 560s are more comfy as they do not weigh half a tonne. Both have a bit extra treble, so not quite neutral. The cable for hifiman is also rather short, so I'd recommend purchasing an extension directly.
I don't speak fluent Aussie but "go for the Sennies m8." I can easily drive them through the headphone jack on my Samsung Note 9 (curse you for removing it after calling Apple out on it!) and it's not sibilant. I'm sensitive to higher frequencies and I can get headaches easily and with the HD560s I did just fine after stretching the headband on the box (I figured out the clamping force gave me horrible headaches.) Now they are very comfy to wear. The headband adjustment could be better though. It's a little fiddly and doesn't like to stay where you set it. The soundstage is wide, I've been fooled a few times thinking something happened and removed them to listen to my surroundings. Bass is not as pronounced as I would like so I sometimes EQ it. It's not weak though, I don't want to give you that impression by accident. However, if you want to listen to a lot of rap, edm, and other bass heavy music these aren't for you. These are my first pair of audiophile grade headphones so take what I say with a grain of salt.
@@spamcan9208 The 560s aren't really that sibilant as people claim. But they do reveal tracks that are sibilant to begin with. As for the bass, for me it's just the right amount. There are songs I think that have too much bass but when listened through the 560s , the bass is really textured and not just bloaty.
Once. Nothing stopping people from entering with a bunch of fake accounts though but I believe in karma. I’ll go through the list though and delete obvious multiples but I’m sure people can sneak through.
@@renatomorais8136 LOL. I have an NA I bought nearly 18 years ago a couple years out of college. I wish I had bought a nicer one, but even then most were ratty.
I would never buy a Hifiman product again. I bought the Ananda headphones ($700), not cheapaudio, but I thought I'd treat myself (lesson learned). They stopped working after 15 months--warranty is 12 months. The company offered two options, 1) trade up and spend $700 more or 2) Ananda replacement for ~$270 but with no warranty. Maybe #2 was fair but I couldn't spend hundreds more with no warranty given my experience. Of course my experience is just with this one product and one purchase, but judge for yourself. Moving forward I'm sticking to products with 5 yr warranties, or they have to be cheap enough to affordably replace every 18 months or so.
I had good luck with Grado fixing my headphones for a reasonable $40 a couple years ago. I suppose it was 40% of the purchase price which is not insignificant.
@@timc_2433 Still deciding. Just using some cheap earbuds and old senn and monoprice for now. Been looking at the monoprice open back ribbons, 5 yr warranty. I may try to fix the Anandas myself too.
@@moniack Yeah, maybe their offer wasn't bad in terms of price. But it was the 15 month timing and no additional warranty that bothered me. Also, I'm pretty sure it's just a loose wire, so I might try to fix them myself--nothing to lose at this point.
I sent back, terrible sound,my fidelio x2hr are on a different class, these guys will tell you anything!don't bother go for the grado's they are in a different class too.Or the shp 9500 .

Hi! I have ATH AD500x and they're my first "hi fi", too! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. Maybe in a week come my HE400SE v2, if you want, i will tell you about my impressions later. (MT-602 AMP) Greetings.
What did you get?
@@5ChSP2UxVtswQh-Znzkpbg What was your opion, having both?
@@clockcycle i have the AD500X. I had (for a while) the 400se v2, too. The Hifimans (if you have a good amp) have better sound, a level up. But they are heavy, their headband sucks. The AD500X are very good headphones, (better for FPS games), very much comfortable, light. Now i have the AKG 702, too.
Taking off the side grills and adding wire mesh with large holes did wonders to mine! Opened up the soundstage overall. I will never put them back on.
Nice video. Enjoy your trip. 🤘🏼🎸🤘🏼
These guys are trying to rip you off. Pulled the same thing on me. Don't give them anything.
@@wrinkleneckbass thanks for the warning. I don't even know how I'd respond to them.
The key is just be content and apply the cheapest, low hanging audio adjustments with the biggest gains in satisfaction like EQing and pad mods.
How do you y'all get the money to just drop 3k-5k on a headphone? Do you just save up or get paid really well?
It's very similar to the X4 which sounds incredible with a bit of EQ.
I suspect those will become better too
I thought I had them pretty much broken it but I’ll have to let them run some more
The manual for these do say something like 'give these about 150 hours breakin time , doesn't need full volume " and yeah, they're much better now
@@cheapaudioman I don't know exactly when I got to the point when the sound stopped getting even better. I only ran them when in use, which is about 8hrs a day, seems like a month of use, might have been even more. Never 8 hours in one go, few hours at a time. With rest in between. Going to deva pro soon, current deva going to my son 😁
This was also my experience with the Deva.
Thanks Randy! Great driving music. 👍
The sound improves a lot after running in

The title was a bit of a stretch. I actually made the trip for other reasons.
Great car review
Great video. I think the SHP9600 are around $80 now though, not $150. So cheaper than this headphone, but better?
Love me the CX9. However I’m biased since I have worked in Mazda parts for 5 years 🤣. However we put our money where our mouth is, we have owned a CX5 for a while.
Fuel more expensive than Headphones. Great review.

Hey is it worth having the dt990 and 400se ? Can’t decide which one to get.
@@PikaSquish yeah cheers. Yeah just thinking of getting both anyways. Both got very good reviews
I don’t know how long you burned them in but sibilance often times take time to burn out.
Ahhhhh! Thank you!
Those are slightly cheaper than my Grado sr80x...same open design. I have no complaints about the sound of my Grados, but the cables where reinforced to deal with weak cables on the sr80e, and they went to far
I liked these, but I did reurn them and buy the Sundara's

I just got these a few weeks ago when they went on sale. They do need power, Pixel 2 dongle barely has any volume. There is a Mayflower ARC MK2 used close to me. Would that pair well with HE400SE?
Checked out Denial on Tidal, Randy. You must have been referring to the original release in 2004. Re-release 10 years later much more subdued.

These or the Sennheiser HD 560S? (Same price here in Au)
@Flaming mate how much are they in Australia please 😜👍🇦🇺
I have both and prefer Hifiman, I think the bas for instance sounds cleaner. But the 560s are more comfy as they do not weigh half a tonne. Both have a bit extra treble, so not quite neutral.
The cable for hifiman is also rather short, so I'd recommend purchasing an extension directly.
If you have an amp then you can buy the 400se
