      What are you talking about? Mate juniper strength comes from the foliage. That's a 100% fact .Cutting like 95% off the tree makes it very weak. If you can't understand this, then maybe Bonsai isn't for you...

    I wish the tree had been in silhouette against the sky rather than against the tree. I had a hard time seeing the overall shape, I could only see the lower part well. Every time I see you trim a bonsai I think it is trimmed too hard, but your results are wonderful. My son tells me “they don’t feel pain, mom, it’s ok to cut branches”! 😊

    Some people are just SO boxed in by rules. They learned it from some expert during their journey and are now too stubborn to absorb new information or try new techniques. You clearly know what you're doing. You can be the most perfect bonsai artist and still receive negative comments. As irritating as the negative comments are, they only help your channel win the UA-cam algorithm.

    You deserve respect for your years of experience and applied knowledge. Your approach is the reason I watch your channel. Sure, I watch artists that use no wire at all, some who wire every little branch, some who make cuts like they’re chopping salad, etc. I think people have the right to approach Bonsai as it suits them, if it’s for their own edification. Sure, you have to meet certain standards if you’re representing your club, exhibiting in a show, etc. But take from those that have obviously mastered the art, and apply to developing your own style. I can’t imagine taking time to provide negative comments to someone who obviously knows more than I do. My suggestion is to avoid the naysayers as much as possible; the vast majority of us appreciate your time in sharing your skills and knowledge.

    I've heard this a lot from the fungi folks too. I never learned how complicated soil is until I learned a bit about mycology. One of the guys put it that here are leaves, and rocks, and bugs, and organic material the soil needs. But none of it is usable for the poor plants until they all pool their different aspects to create soil. Really love this bonsai community.

    Some of the criticisms are so funny to me. People who never worked on a single 50 year old tree, much less a 250 year old tree, who will probably never even SEE a 1500 year old tree in real life are lecturing Milton on how he is doing something wrong and will probably kill his trees!
    I cannot think of anyone else in the world I would trust more than Milton with any ancient juniper. Clearly by now he knows exactly what he is doing and wouldn't risk a hard prune if for one second he thought it would compromise the health of the tree.
    Keep showing those armchair experts your craft!

    • @MiltonChang
      @MiltonChang 2 дні тому

      Wow! Thank you!
      True, there is no right or wrong way when you have an open mind and a long term view. In six month the tree will look OK, in two years great, in 10 years it ought to be in a museum for everyone to enjoy.
      It is not me, I am just a passer by to bring nature home.
      Thank you from my heart!

    I think one of those comments last time you are talking about was mine. If you go back and look there was nothing negative about and in fact I thanked you for sharing with us. Also had several people comment on my comment saying they agreed with me. There are many different ways to approach bonsai. I just don’t agree with your approach to them and that’s ok. We don’t have to agree and we can still both enjoy this hobby equally. It doesn’t have to be this big drama kind of thing that I don’t agree with the way you do bonsai thanks as always for sharing and happy new year

      If you look at the ring spacing, in this case exposed lines, spacing is a fraction of mm. That works out to about 100years per inch. 1500 years is an estimate...the point it is is very old and venerable. I worked on it with a great deal of respect. This tree is from the high mountains of Mojave desert outside of LA.
      Thanks for asking...it is good to be skeptical.,..I never BS!

      @Tulio_Laanen 5 днів тому +2

      @MiltonChang I didn't mean it in a sceptical way! I was just curious. Thank for the info! That is unbelievable! It must belong to one of the oldest bonsai still alive, If not oldest living organism that you can hold!

      Welcome! Please Stay tuned. And share your bonsai joy with others.
      Bonsai in Japan is correctly referred to as "craft." You follow a well defined set of procedures to get to a well defined goal of perfection., BUT bonsai is art, there is no goal...so long as the end result is pleasing. To that, I would add...do learn the traditional ways, to get you started right...and then extrapolate to go further!
      Thus the difference. Craft enables the master to predefined what is right...In art, teachers encourages creativity, meaning doing things differently to get to a better place!

    Your justification does not apply to a California juniper. Its energy is received through its foliage. By depriving it of so much foliage for such a large mass, you may have well killed it. A quarter of the foliage can be removed, but with what you’ve done, I won’t be surprised if it dies. This was a very reckless move on your behalf, and I’m shocked that a bonsai “expert” would do this.

  • @shrimp5093

    Very few trees look like yours, if you'd put one of your trees in a line-up, I would be able to tell which tree is yours, it's very distinct. If distinguishing yourself from others means drastic cutting, then I'd say keep doing it!

      Every bonsai will look its own because you are modifying natural tendency, not forcing our will upon nature by bending.
      I am NOT against writing...but thoughtful/skillful bending that can emulate nature...which I think is hard t do...because our inclination invariably creeps in.
