Germany partially decriminalises cannabis | BBC News

- Germany has partly decriminalised the use of marijuana.
Under the new rules, which came into force on 1 April, over 18s can possess up to 25g of cannabis in public, and adults can grow up to three plants per household.
But people will not be allowed to smoke cannabis within sight of schools, sports centres or in "pedestrian zones" between 7:00 and 20:00.
Supporters of the law-change say it will help kill the black market and improve quality control, while police unions are warning of real-world harm.

Multiple western nations have legalized pot already. This trend will continue across the globe. Marijuana is not nearly dangerous enough to be illegal. Pot being illegal only drives the black market.
Not only Western nations btw, don’t forget South Africa, Thailand etc.!
Is legalisation definitely going to solve the black market issue? Honest question. Regulated means at least taxed (and many other rules), and where there is tax to be avoided, there is typically a black market. e.g. tobacco black market in UK was estimated by HMRC at nearly £3bn in the year 2021-2022. I think there will still be a significant black market post any legalisation.
@@tomb2840 true but it depends on prices and taxes,
obviously there would be a black market still running until there is enough time for businesses to begin selling in coffee shops and if they dont have a headstart, there will be a while for that, but after that period, if it gets taxed to the point that prices will be immense, higher than what they could be bought from dealers, people wouldnt buy there. obviously, there would still be a black market (or whatever you want to call it) even if theres a sensible taxation.
that being said, it would mean less money going to dealers and gangs but still not enough to combat the profit they make off of cocaine, crack etc
@@tomb2840I woudnt buy from the black market if pot was legalized in my country. It may not end the black market but weakens it.

@@peterschutz1422 No, the entire reason this is significant is because it is a part-legalization. BBC even used the same term throughout the video but titled the video itself wrong. You can grow it and obtain it legally. That's what it means to be legal. There is nothing illegal about the growing or consumption of it. Decriminalization would mean that it's still illegal to grow or obtain but you won't be found guilty of a crime if it is in your possession, to a certain extent that is. everyone seems to forget that cannabis used to be legal in germany before the war. we could buy 5g in every pharmacy without any problems because it used to be a medicine here, but the usa had germany participate on the ‚war on drugs' even though it was no problem here at that time
Before the war (WWII) it was legal in the whole world. Prohibition of cannabis started after alcohol prohibition was a failure (too) and Anslinger needed another drug to be forbidden so he doesn't lose his job. USA then pushed the prohibition throughout the world. It also has some raccist reasons why it was forbidden. Mainly mexicans smoked marijuana and then could be jailed for there culture.

Possible lots government officials r paid by major illegal growers and distributors to keep that way so they can make more money …
Because it makes you think more about how the system is false and we are living in a simulation. Weed makes you more awake to think about things like that and spirituality.
hello I am from Germany . The police are following us a lot at the moment. They are carrying out a lot of drug tests on drivers. We don't have a nine limit for THC yet, they measure it in the blood. If a police officer catches me in the car, I'll still lose my driver's license. Our policy is sneaky, just like in other countries. (Unfortunately) we are only allowed to have 1 nanogram in our blood at the moment, otherwise they will take away our driving license and getting it back in Germany will quickly cost five thousand euros. You also don't have to take anything for 6 months. They take your blood every month, then you have to do a lot of tests and if you're lucky you can drive again after 6 months.
Now we have to wait 3 months for a 3.5 nanogram increase. 3.5 nanograms is ridiculous. Many Germans also see it that way. because the politicians here in Germany are just doing shit again.
Where do you live lol? Bavaria? Because here in NRW not many people care. We even had several police officers (not working, in their free time) attend our Osterfeuer and they didnt really care what we did, they just said dont drive the next day (which we didnt) and we will be fine.
In the war on drugs I’m happy to see that drugs are still winning

Alcohol ruins more lives then cannabis and you can get that all over the uk, tobacco and alcohol are addictive. Cannabis is not physically addictive. It’s shocking how ignorant reporting can be. Further more the reporter saying it’s addictive is representing a point of view that is discriminatory to medical cannabis patients like myself.
I always thought we have to wait much much longer, but suddenly the new law just passed. An incredible and surreal feeling! Much Love from germany :)

Hopefully the UK will be next. Annoys me how they’ll do it past most of our life times 💔.
It’s literally the same as alcohol.
And there is a stigma around weed because it’s illegal (because our government decided so). SMH
Fuck weed. The odour alone disgusts me.

Nah its not the same as alcohol. Every weed smoker i know cant do anything without being high, they cant work, concentrate or even watch a movie or play a video game without being stoned. Whereas only a tiny fraction of alcohol users are addicts

1:30 LOL Why would the black market be strengthened if people can grow at home??
That's what our opponents say all the time.. They invent reasons to take this right away from us
Because they’ve gotta fearmonger somehow
Because more people will wanna buy weed, and dispensaries won't be available everywhere for everyone. Like he said, they expect the black market to be strengthened initially because that's when the demand will be higher. You also gotta think about all the people who already buy from dealers, many will continue, and probably drag more people into it.
@@vsluj3508 maybe for the first year until everyone grew their own in the summer
Because there is no legal way to obtain it for now unless you have a valid prescription or someone that grew it illegally in anticipation of a successful passing of the law. The law for the "Anbauvereinigungen" (Cannabis Social Clubs) will only come in effect by July 1'st and even then we still need to wait for a few months until harvest, so black market will be booming until then.
It’s funny to see that before the legalization the police was for a decriminalisation and after they were like „this will strengthen the black market..“ the police in Germany Never stood in front of the camera and said „we‘re fine with that decision.“ 🤦🏼♂️
Legalize it ffs wasting police time. Think of how much money you could make for the nhs
If the UK legalises, what you think the tax is gonna be? Look at the tax on tobacco. People will still be buying unregulated black market cos legal weed will be going minimum £25 for a gram.
lol na £6 a gram@@sighfly2928
the police dont even bother with weed anymore, unless your a dealer theyll just take what you have and let you walk off xd
@@pl0mp378thing about it being illegal is if ur renting you risk being made homeless for smoking weed, risk losing ur job over drug tests, drive high the day after an you can be banned from driving, accidentally bring weed into an airport end up in jail overnight. What bullshit headline, they've legalised it ffs 😂
I wish they would have the same rules here. The pain I'm in on a daily basis through Arthritis is awful. I'm quite prepared to pay for it and enjoy a nearly pain free existence. Come on Labour open your eyes. We have a local farmer who grows it legally for pharmaceutical reasons. He ought to be able to sell it locally. Can you imagine being pain free after 30 years of constant pain!!

honestly for non-smokers there is totally no difference. I was worried a bit about the smell in cities but it didn't get more than before.
Whereas the UK still wastes money trying to keep it illegal 😂😂😂😂
I was a Washington state certified medical cannabis consultant. The state of WA would like me to tell you that that a cannabis addiction is the same as coffee. There have been no known recorded deaths ever from cannabis. The lethal dose of cannabis is consuming 1500 lbs in 15 minutes... Everything else is subjective.
It’s called CANnabis, not CAN’Tabis.
It's just a plant that would actually grow wild all over the U.K. Maybe not with the same potency as in a farm but still just a plant. Imagine making a plant illegal. Sure illegal to do certain tasks while under the influence just like alcohol and not allowed in placed that people don't want it like smoking is but the plant is just a plant.
Same in germany, it was a profitable crop for ages before they banned it due to obscure reasons. It was used for fiber and oil back in the days. Im glad that the new law also eases the rules for farmers that want to grow industrial hemp, because the laws for that (even tho it only contained miniscule amounts of thc) were incredible strict too.
Congratulations Germany!! another step into the future. Come on UK what're we playing at?!
Just dont do it too much people.
Otherwise the government might change their minds on it.
I bet you there was 0 anti social behaviour reported, only happy and hungry people.
TBF, the smell itself and public smoking IS by definition anti-social behaviour.
@@user-ds8rj2vc4vno it's not, lol. Especially not "by definition" 😂
@@user-ds8rj2vc4v The smell of weed just smells like freedom.

Yes, it is.
Antisocial behaviour is defined as 'behaviour by a person which causes, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to persons not of the same household as the person' (Antisocial Behaviour Act 2003 and Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 ).
Your smoking causes others distress. It is by literal definition of the law, antisocial behaviour.
I have no issue with people smoking, but keep it away from others who don't want it. That goes for tobacoo and alcohol too. Enjoy in the appropriate place.
Exactly! It was kind of surreal for us living in germany to hear it live on radio. One host even went as far as lighting one up live on air just this morning as part of an experiment. Of course all under medical supervision.
Silly it’s illegal in the U.K. I don’t smoke but I can see the benefits. There are so many health conditions like Parkinson’s or epilepsy that cannabis not only helps but drastically improves their conditions better than any pharmaceutical medication.
And let’s just talk about how ridiculous it is that alcohol is legal and cannabis isn’t. Alcohol doesn’t really have any health benefits for you at all, how many binge drinkers and life ruining addictions does it cause, how many emergency services calls every weekend are called to deal with alcohol related incidents from illness to violence. You generally don’t see people who have smoked a doobie causing fights like drunks do.
Aren't youths today drinking less than they did 10-15 year ago in the UK? Pretty sure the BBC did an article on this called "Why Gen Zers are growing up sober curious" - would this not apply to weed also?
It's a green herb, please protect all greens..

No taxes for a year atleast tho. There are no licenced shops that sell for profit(with taxes), you can grow yourself or join a cannabis social club where they give you theharvest for the production prices and a small monthly fee. The selling for profit is still illegal in EU law, thats why it wont come until the EU changes its stance on it. But it will probably, as far as i know its already in planning, and the rest of the EU member states will probably follow soon!
The BBC questions just show how far away they are from reality, pushing the negative.
