  • The 24 Green Berets stationed at Lang Vei act as “force multipliers”-their mission is to train allied indigenous troops and lead them on covert reconnaissance patrols. Operating deep within enemy territory, the risk of death or capture is extremely high.

I remember this very well. I arrived in country the beginning of Feb 68. at Tan Nhan Nut in Saigon during the TET OFFENSIVE. Our fire support base was in the Mekong Delta. I was attached to the 9th. Inf. div. I can't imagine what my fellow brothers went through going up against the NVA. The LAW rockets had no effect on the tanks. I am glad that many made it out alive and truly sorry that 1 had to spend 5 years as a POW. My heart goes out to the family members and friends of the ones that made the ultimate sacrifice. RIP my fellow brothers. You will never be forgotten.

My great uncle, James Moreland, was a medic at Lang Vei. He was missing in action for nearly 50 years before we brought him home. I got to meet the commander and several of the men from his unit when he laid my great uncle to rest. These men are heros. Dennis Thompson is a personal hero for what he endured.

They were brave men certainly. It is a tragic waste of life on all sides. Uncle Sam should not have started a war in Vietnam. The tragedy is felt today in Lao where the CIA employed and took advantage of the Hmong people of Lao to fight against their fellow countrymen. That is a wound that will probably never heal. It was all to do with American arrogance and greed.

I worked with one of those former green berets, he wasn't at that camp but right down the road from it and helped with their recovery. He was a Gunsmith at Fort Bragg and I worked in night vision, this was in 2004 and he was in his 80's. He went in the Army a few years after WW2 and was a E-7 by the Vietnam era. I can't recall his first name but his last name was Pipkins, we all called him Mister P. He started off as a mule skinner in the 10th mountain division.

Much as I admire the great professionalism of the Green Berets and all US forces, I also admire my own Rhodesian and South African troops.
We must remember soldiers are just pawns to the politicians.
A US officer speaking to a NVA officer many years after the fall of Saigon and the North's total victory said, "You know we never lost one battle to you Vietcong/NVA".
The NVA officer smiled at him and replied, " well that maybe true but it is also totally irrelevant".

YES! I've been looking for this for YEARS. This documentary was what helped get me into more modern wars. Before I saw it, I was exclusively about WW2. It also helped me appreciate just how big of BADASSES special operations units are.
I'm glad they mentioned the losses the North suffered. The Tet Offensive is seen as this great victory for the North but it wasn't. It was a disaster. Over a 1/3rd of the Viet Cong were wiped out. Their numbers would have to be filled by regular NVA troops. All their gains were reversed. Had the public stayed true to the cause, South Vietnam would still exist.

Trip flares in the wire, don't pop up into the air and float down on parachutes. They were not red either. Trip flares, everywhere I was at, were tied together so if one was tripped, the other about 5-6 feet away went off, and you would shoot between them at what it was that tripped the flares.
Tanks may make a rumbling sound (more like a roar before the M1), but they don't shake then ground. I grew on military bases in the 1950's and 1960's and was around amour of all sorts. Even when 10 to 15 M60 tanks were running by on the road, the ground did not shake!

Funny enough the German and French military are actually far more experienced in overall training and mindset. Then again when I think of Americans, I see prideful people who don't really care for their soldiers and instead keep their oversized eyes pointed to a imaginary pissing fight. Americans in general are a deep sadness for me. Places like Texas and California taking the lead for top most gun related murders numbering in the appalling 3000's a year. It puts a slight easy to my mind when I see places like Brazil, Estonia, France, Greece, Qatar, Sweden, and Turkey placing their citizens in the military to experience the affects of war for a year. There's a certain respect those countries give to their citizens that make it so they can hold a intelligent understanding for the mind of a soldiers and the weapons they handle. But on the other hand you have the Insufferable American's that have so many bloody guns the poor police and enforces have to use so many tactics to ensure their safety as a person they end up looking like the bad guys. In gods sake I'd rather be placed in a Vegas shooting than watch this horrible propaganda again. Besides that, good on you for such a tool.

I can not believe how they endured the tear gas. Unfortunately, they were not equipped for that. Grenades in a confined space are devastating. It’s a shame there were no escape routes out the back.

An excellent video and portrayal of the attack on Lang Vei. I'm disappointed that they failed to mention another Green Beret that was there and was captured, a good friend whom I had the honor and privilege of serving with later on, at the time of Lang Vei Sp5 William G. McMurray, who later retired a E8 or E9.

The Vietnamese were very smart. They modified and adapted to many scenario’s. it seems most Nations at war adapt well and prove to be extremely dangerous for their times. It scares me to think of what the next great war will bring. The technology level is now at a no-win level. The weapons we have now can’t be used if mankind is to continue evolving. We’re like little kids with big toys that we don’t even know how to use. It’s getting extremely dangerous. I pray for world peace in these uncertain times. Maybe it would be better for us to be forced to all band together to defend against an Alien threat, than to continue fighting each other for money and power.
