Ben-laoshi, here is my 2 cents' worth: 1) I hope you get adequately compensated for your early termination - it depends on what kind of contract you signed. Hopefully, you have legal advice in this respect. Otherwise, you have to look upon it as a very painful lesson to be learnt! 2) I left employment at the age of 30 and never looked back. I had to work very hard and my family life suffered (can't say it was all worth it) but in retrospect, I made the right decision. Self-employment and investing in your own business trumps being employed any day. Never give away your ideas to big corporations...always retain your rights to all future profits (and losses of course but that is entrepreneurship!) 3) I would like to suggest how you can differentiate yourself from other Chinese teachers. You probably already offer this on a 1-1 basis but not all students can afford 1-1 private tuition (except maybe the ones who want psychotherapy or a "special" relationship with you :). - Intensive classes to maximise chances of passing the HSK 5 exam (written & oral) or HSK 6 - as these are required for Uni application. - For foreign students who have been accepted into Chinese universities, they may still struggle with Mandarin. Intensive sub-specialised classes for very specific university courses e.g. terminology required in a Chinese art history course would be very different from an Engineering course. Perhaps offer smaller more affordable group classes for these specialised needs? I wish all Dashu laoshi success in your current and future endeavours. Your passion in teaching will ensure that!
