In this video, I’ll go over some of the cable management I’ve added onto my Gatton CNC. This isn’t as much of a how-to video as it is a review of what I’ve done. This is not the best way to manage cables, nor is it the worst way - and it certainly isn’t the only way. It’s just the way I did it because it works for me. Hopefully it helps you out.

Your the first guy who really provided helpful information on laying out and sizing the drag chain. Thanks for the video.

I need to do that. I'd need to 3d print them just because. I want to try this. So glad I got a printer. Thanks for sharing the links for the files.

Nice setup Mark! I’ve been waiting for this video lol i bought the extension cables for all the steppers ..wonder if I could use the left over Y axis cables to add on to others like the Z

That's what I did. I just covered the connections with electrical tape to hide the 2 different colors on the cables. Like I said, I used two 6 foot extension cables on the Z axis and one extension cable on the X axis. If I were more electrically inclined, I would have gotten the proper shielded cable and made the extension cables myself. Since I was ordering more items from Xylotex anyway, I went ahead and got the extension cable set and saved myself the trouble.
      Thanks, Trevor!

i just mount my drag chain at the half way point of the axis covers the whole area of motion with half as much drag chain

Cable chains are very 3D printable. After playing with quite a few cable chain designs, I settled on: www.thingiverse.com/thing:3117461 - of course printing long chains like this is going take you a while!

There are lots of options out there, of course. It all depends on what your priority is. I wanted to use the CNC - not work on it. After watching a friend go through about 6 different drag chain designs, discovering the shortcomings of each design he tried (not to mention his attempts at those designs using different materials,) I decided that it was easier (and cheaper in the long run) to just buy the drag chains, get the CNC up and running, and be done with it. For the money, this was the best option for me. Your mileage may vary, of course, but at the time, I had more important things to move on to.

Mark Lindsay CNC Oh yeah absolutely. And if my setup was the size of yours I probably wouldn't have printed my own. I'm new to CNC - am currently finishing up my Mostly Printed CNC build - and started with a 3D printer so it was natural to print my own chains. I do think they are a good general solution though of course not for everyone.
(I just found your channel and love the content, BTW)
