I’ve been playing bass for 40 years … professionally for the past 5 years… I come to this channel to learn from Ellen… what a gift these two are to our bass player community
@walterneilson8119 your comment intrigues me. What has your journey been like to have played bass for so long to just recently go pro? I'm in my early 40's with only a few years of bass playing under my belt. I've never gigged, done session work or play in a band but often wonder what a career in music would look like. What made you finally go pro after all those years?
Great job Ellen. I totally get exited to watch someone learning more about something that love doing. Also special shout out to Hovac. I get as much fun hearing your instructions . I almost get as much fun from your instructions as Ellen's playing. Not that you care about those kind of things 🥴🥴
It really depends on the music you play. Been playing guitars and bass for about thr same time. I play rock. I don't care for jazz, funk or country. Focus on the roots and play around that and fill in with whater sounds good and lay down 1/8ths. I have tried other genres on bass and it just dont feel right. I don't want the limelight and had that on guitar. I am more than happy to stand back and blast simple bass lines and let my guitarists shine.
I know what you mean. Our band just opened for a Rush Tribute band. Her dad a very good teacher who teaches her about everyday. The way they bond and have fun is amazing. She is way ahead of many seasoned players.
Dad has taught her well, he gave here the tools and ingredients, now letting her cook on her own with just a slight nudge here and there. This dish will come out just fine.. This is a monster studio musician in the making.. I can see her fill her agenda pretty quick once she is ready for it.
Ellen reminds me of my brother practicing the accordion when he was about 5. He and my mom would practice about 1 hour every day. He loved the accordion and was great. He won numerous festivals over the years. He was never as happy as when he was playing. Later in life, when he was in junior high, he could pick up his accordion, and after about 10 minutes play hits off the radio. Ellen really loves her music and is so fun to watch.
Man, I got chills once you nailed it, Ellen! Sick runs! Knowing where to let the song breathe at such a young age blows me away. Hovak, you are a musician's dream Dad. Take care guys 🤘
Your daughter is an amazing talent. I love the joy I see in her face as she's playing for fun, yet with exceptional skill for her age. It inspires me as a fellow bass player. Bless you for making such a fun channel to watch.
Ellen is phenomenal !! it is really enjoyable to watch her progress . i can see where she is playing without watching her fretboard as much, she is becoming more proficient in her playing , and she is a joy to watch and listen to !! God bless your family, and keep the music going !!
I used to play bass guitar over 40 yrs ago, and I recently bought a Fender squire and practice amp to just have some fun, but having heard Ellen play, I almost regret buying the bass and amp...lol...you are amazing Ellen...stay safe!
Never EVER let skilled musicians dampen your fun. Yes, Ellen is amazing, but talent alone isn't what makes her so great (it sure does help, of course). She puts in a lot of work to be this good. Obviously, not all of us can put in this amount of work she does, so obviously our own playing will sound bad compared to hers. But that doesn't mean you should quit playing. Instead, continue to play bass because I feel playing an instrument yourself it helps you to admire great talent even more. :) Also, I bet the last thing Ellen and her Dad want is for anyone to quit playing because of the videos.
I dont come close to playing that well, but wow what a bass player and team. You share more than the music we hear. Love to see the joy and Interaction between you two. Ellen, i'm sure you inspire thousands. Great job. Thanks.
I didn't start playing the bass until I was a teenager, you're doing much better than I ever did. Now I'm older and the fingers don't work as good. You're doing really awesome.
Omg! She is so gifted! I love to watch her fingers fly!! I can’t get enough of her! Dad is one heck of a teacher! Cool and direct! What JOY to watch her! Ellen truly loves it!❤️❤️❤️❤️
I like this because it shows that even a skilled individual like Ellen has to practice and face small challenges before achieving the perfect shot. So, everyone learning how to play bass, remember this is part of the process. Embrace your struggles and failures with a smile, continue practicing, and you will keep improving! Never let the struggle defeat you!
You know my opinion. Phenom. Just keep playing, keep practicing. I tell my nephew all of the time, he wants to play in a rock/metal band… I tell him practice and play everything. Different styles, different genres. Learn so much playing other things. Great way to practice. Dad. You keep it up! The world needs more dads like you!
The thing that I most enjoyed was the process of being creative and mapping to the funk with out ever hearing the bass. That is too cool for words Ellen- Love your workl
I was also thinking to slow the tempo down for practice purposes. Ellen you are such a great inspiration to aspiring musicians of all kinds. Very brave, too, to show your process, mistakes and all, not just the finished product.
You guys rock so hard! I love to check in every now and again to watch one of your videos. It's good vibes all over! On a musical, but also on an emotional level. It's great to be able to witness the joy and prowess with whitch you keep on honing your chops Ellen! You're amazing! Keep up the good work and the good giggles! Greetings from Holland.
God, this girl is going to be a major driving force in the resurgence of rock in the very mid future. Her and her coterie of simular aged artists will give truth to the phrase "LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL."
I’m a long time guitar player, and have used various styles of jam tracks when they were only out on CDs. Now with the advent of UA-cam I’ve saved a lot of long tracks I enjoy playing to. My favorite styles are Latin, bossa nova, and funk. Keep up the good work, you got the chops, stay in the pocket. Jam tracks help you think and play outside the box, and be creative.
Seeing you mess up lines here and there makes me appreciate your effort to produce the videos with no mistakes more. You truly understand the value and the reward of perseverance and dedication. That's a great valuable life lesson that not many people get even well into their adulthood. Look at all the people that say they deserve such and such and such just because. Keep at it girl. You are a great life lesson for those spoiled little adult kids.
Yes!!! More and more tutorials!!! Like I mentioned in the other video, you guys have absolutely given me the motivation to stop thinking about it and just doing it, and I went out and picked up a new bass, because I used to be really into playing the guitar, and playing the bass and the bass was really my passion and I put a few of your videos on to see what my daughters reaction would be and she just turned 7 and she was very interested and was asking me all kinds of questions and she is very passionate about music like I am and I would love to see her take an interest in playing an instrument and having that outlet and hopefully that same kind of happiness in it as Ellen. Best content on UA-cam for sure 👍🏼
You and Ellen are my inspiration to learn bass, thank you and keep being this incredible father, and you Ellen keep being this amazing bassist and human being!
You're doing a super, mega, hiper, awesome job educating your daughter! Ellen is already an exemplary musician and she's gonna be a big name in the music scene. Congrats to both of you!!!
Ellen's talent is a given, without question. Those runs are super-cool, but I gotta say that when she just plays the groove it is solid, and it is magic! Thank you both so much for bringing us this great content. 😊
My youngest sons name is Lennon. I LOVE The Beatles shirt!! And my oldest son plays bass. I did as well when I was 16. Watching you guys makes me want to pick it up again! WAYYYY TO GO SWEET GIRL!!! YOU ARE GONNA GO FARRRR!!! YOU ARE A BLESSING FOR SURE!!
Toutes ces vidéo sont des masterclass ,je dit bravo a son coach qui a une pédagogie incroyable ,Hellen rayonne elle a déjà tout , elle diffuse que du bonheur bravo et merci à vous deux, des bises de la France
Sounds really good, and your bass sound is really groovy.👌 Ellen learns very quickly, if she is more focused and calmer, it will go even faster. The last part was much better than before. I wish I could do this. keep it up. Kind regards, Chester from the Netherlands👍
Ellen. You are amazing and it’s a pleasure to watch your videos. This was a good video showing how you have progressed in what seems to me to be a short period of time. Thanks to both of you for your work and time to share with us. Always a big fan of yours. ❤️👍
let me tell you what helps me alot when i play. Either sit and nod the rhythm with your head or stomp with your heel or your feets in rhythm. For me that works alot, especially nodding works good, the tapping/stomping with the foot, can feel good but sometimes in recording sessions you would not want to stomp/tap the bpm with your foot, so learning to nod the rhythm while playing helps alot for me :) Great progress Ellen, and great dedication and work dad! I am watching your progress and as a fellow musician i am proud!
Greetings young lady and dad. Believe me when a say that is soooo refreshing to watch you play and dad encourage and guide you🙂. Please, keep going both we need more of this, not only the music but also the parent-daughter relationship you show 👏🙏🤝
I love the concept of making a mistake and instantly going back to basics. Hit a sour note? Drop down an octave and start again. Rebirth in every mistake. Ellen you're an inspiration. I'm an old guitar player with a touch of arthritis in my left thumb. I keep watching you and I think "try a different body position. Try standing up." I've found I can actually play better when I walk around.
The one thing that all musicians need is a understanding parent that knows that you're going to make mistakes but the after work is going to be amazing

I think these videos are great, and fun to watch. It sure doesn't take her long to master the end goal! But, she also has a SUPER teacher!

Wonderful to see how Ellen makes the song her own and is completely absorbed in mastering it.

You are clearly an incredible teacher! So awesome to learn to improvise, great step toward writing original music!

In the words of the great Tal Wilkenfeld, "Practice VERY Slowly".

Hey Ellen! Did you hear the end part of Abbey Road song She's So Heavy. Some amazing stuff!
