boy, what a driver fittipaldi was! 58 years old and he was pushing mansell until the last lap, he was just relentless. very entertaining race. congrats to both of them.
Should bring this back as a support series for some F1 races (and for motorsport in general). Ageism is rife in sport and something like this helps to combat it.
@@amjan , no. The gap must have been massive. These GP Masters cars were modified ChampCars, with 650 bhp. The Formula 1 cars at that time had V10 engine, putting out almost 1000 bhp. Not to mention the weight difference. It just illustrates how fast F1 is. On this circuit I think the gap would be about 10/15 seconds.
@@1106Winter Even not sure that those cars wouldn't been beaten by Coloni which used similar DFR engine in 1991.but still fascinating to see those masters fighting.
As an American I didn't get a chance to see Emerson Fittipaldi and Nigel Mansell race in their F1 days, but I did get to see them race at the 1993 Indy 5oo which Fittipaldi won his second Indy 5oo and Mansell came third, what a race that was that day in May at the Brickyard.
Nowadays, this race could be incredible. Former F1 racing drivers as Barrichello, Massa, Montoya, Fisichella, Trulli, Button, Ralf Schumacher, Frentzen, Villeneuve, Hill, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Webber, Raikkonen, Kubica, Irvine, Herbert. All these drivers won at least one race.
I spent 15 years photographing Indy Car Racing and during that time both Fittipaldi and Mansell competed. Both became CART champions. I spent time around Fittipaldi when he raced for Roger Penske. My client, Pennzoil, sponsored Rick Mears and I was authorized to enter the Penske Hospitality area at the track. Emerson and Danny Sullivan were also in the mix at that time.Fittipaldi originally did not want to compete in the Masters Series because of a career ending back injury that if aggravated could cause paralysis. When Emerson quit racing because of the injury that was it. He never intended to get back into a race car again. He was invited into the series and he consulted with Dr. Steve Olvey, the CART doctor who was his friend and also the doctor that guided him through his rehab from the bad one. Dr. Olvey checked Emerson out thoroughly and finally gave him a positive report that he could go racing. However, another serious accident could still injure him severely. Dr. Olvey also attended the race as both the head of medical services for the series and to watch over Emerson. The Cream always rises to the top and the race proved just that. What worked to Mansell's and Fittipaldi's favor was the cars were basically Indy Car Reynards. As such there were familiar with this type of car. Similar aerodynamics, similar power and tire sizes. It was like old home week. Johansen and Cheever had Indy Car experience but they were no match for the top two. Thirty laps later Mansell and Fittipaldi had 20 seconds on the field.
These are former Indycar CART series Reynards from the year 2000... They were reworked by Delta Motorsports, with different engines ( Judd V8 normally aspirated 650hp ), with turbo removed and airjacker removed. So they are 250hp down from their former Indycar CART series engines that they used to have.
Thank you for this stefmeister2008.... I'd been hearing about it but could never find it.... A shame budget couldn't support it. Because this was awesome.
Things like these are missing nowadays... i would love to see things like a ProCar series with F1 drivers, even if it meant 3 or 4 races per year... imagine the crazy outcomes
It's interesting that two Formula One Champions, Cart Champions and Indy 500 Champions where battling for the lead. And then there was the rest of the pack.
That grid is STACKED, sucks it was short lived… I would have love to see more of the old school guys still competing and the cars are equal builds and no driver aids. Imagine Senna in this series, it would have still been active cause people would want to see Senna vs Mansell vs Fittipaldi.
i would love to see formula 1 cars that were identical so that the drivers were up against each others skill. That would be fantastic to see even cars but see who is actually the best driver through pure skill. Similar to go karting.
Yes. The chassis was based off the 2000 Reynard Champ Car Chassis and the engine was based off the Ford-Cosworth XB also used in Champ Car racing. The primary difference is it was NA instead of Turbo.
I like the fact that the chicane has been replaced with a simple kink, but I absolutely hate that the first part of the track with the fast uphill corners has been replaced with a simple straight and a hairpin.
They ran out of Money. From memory I think the belief at the time was they didn't have the money to begin with & had been relying on the series getting a bigger audience than it did in order to attract more sponsors/backers to help fund it. When that didn't happen they stopped paying the chassis supplier who took them to court for non payments & the series was done after that.
Mansell could probably enter Eurovision and win that as well. What a driver.
What a drive from Emmerson at 58 years old! Great stuff from both him and Mansell - was great to see them back in an f1-esque car.
Well that's an underrated comment 😂❤

To hear Murray Walker say "This is Fantastic" again was awesome..... I wish "The Yellow Helmet" could have been alive for this.
So do i ...
R.I.P. Andrea De Cesaris (1959-2014)
Morreu tão novo infelizmente
I came here just to listen to Murray screaming "THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FAAANTAAASTIC!!!!" again

why did this not take off? sounds like would have been a great series to watch!
The most race winner in F1.....except Schumacher, Senna and Prost.
Murray still on form as ever lol.
David Laidler also except
Damon Hill.
I know this cars look really slow compared to F1, but it makes me so happy to hear Murray saying stuff like "Mansell leads, followed by Fittipaldi!"
They don't. Those cars were really fast.
@@amjan , these cars were really fast.
Still hell of a lot slower than Formula 1😉

What potential this series had. So sad they failed after only 3 races. Imagine the 2000s drivers joining this series during the current years!
Wow, those cars look fantastic! IndyCar Reynard with an F1 style rear wing and top air inlet?!?! That's like a fucking dream F1 car!! Awesome!
Ah, when Murray Walker said "Go, go, go!"... so many memories :)
Emerson did an amazing job, what a legend still as good a performance as in his youth :)
Hans Stuck was such a boss in this race
I was lucky enough to be at this race. We sat across from the pits and it was a real honor to see these legends race again!
The old original f1 tune❤

PLEASE!!
"In what looks like a virtually indentical car except the livery...which it is of course" - classic Murray!
Would be so cool to see this make a return
Nico Rosberg, Kamui Kobayashi, Jenson Button, Mika Hakkinen, Pastor Maldonado, Max Chilton
I suggest mika häkkinen, felipe massa, alain prost, damon Hill, David coulthard and how about montoya

Mansell dont won the indy 500, just the cart championship

I think this would be equivelant to a HRT or Marussia f1 car. They would be fair game if they were to race each other.
