  • Karl talks about his investigation into the geology of the lower Ouseburn Valley (where there are few rocks on display) through old maps, geological surveys, mining records and art. The formation of the underlying strata and physical features on the surface will be explained and related to the history of the area and local industry.
The Ouseburn Valley has been coined a ‘Super Case Study’ by John Smith because it provides exam answer content across topics, exam boards and levels of Geography. Karl’s talk forms the bedrock, literally and figuratively, for understanding one of the most significant locations in the development of NE England and provides an in-depth study of ‘place’.
Karl Egeland-Eriksen, Field Trip Organiser for the Northumbria Branch of the Open University Geological Society
