Good evening. I could watch your videos all day without getting bored. And now with starting chemotherapy, it gives me more of a reason to. Thank you for sharing. God Bless.
back in 2020 I got hooked on watching your videos, my wife had a bad stroke and we spent 2 months in the hospital so I spent a lot of time watching. She has since passed away (a year ago yesterday) and I'm just now getting to where I can watch them. I enjoy them but they bring back so many bad memories of how she struggled just to do anything. But she has been made whole again.
Thanks for taking us along on this adventure with you. I remember that kid with that tiny little sawmill that sat on the ground, how far you've come. Nice video.
I don't mind listening to you talk. You speak elloquently but these videos where your just running your mill and I'm just watching a hard working man using his hands, his tools, his skills and his faith in the Lord to make a living. That's what I did for 50 years till my health went south. Thanks for all you do.
I have a woodland mills HM122 and I really enjoy making my own lumber. Sawing boards is definitely the easy part. Most of the work is in getting the logs to the mill , on the mill and rotating those big ones. I think it is great exercise ! Look at it this way , we save money on lumber as well as gym memberships !
Great video. I need 20, 12 ft 2×4 to replace the roof on the rear of my shop. I almost had a stroke when I priced them back in July of last year. I wish you were close to Weaver Alabama.
Before using just any sawdust in compost, determine the plants you will grow and what different types of sawdust due to the soil. As In...... some are bug resistant, so they may push away crawlers, that help in rejuvenation. PH levels in different trees will affect soil conditions also.
Timbermates out of Ontario does the same technique. You are right about Home Depot. All you can buy there are heart pieces. Those half and one-inch cuts are great should you decide to make toys. I drool when I see them! A wire wheel on a cordless angle grinder to zip some of the crap off the log.
We have mostly Tamarack up here in Caribou Maine on our property, it’s a tough wood to cut on my LT40, you have to use alot of lubricant to cut through the pitch that builds up on the blade. My first attempts where kinda twisty and I learned the importance of using the toe boards to line up the center of the logs built a 12 x 24 greenhouse
I know you've been at this for quite a while I have sawn for my on use quite a bit of pine as well I try to peel the bark when I get the logs unless I know I will get them sawed within a week or so but sometimes the bark is all ready falling off caused by pine beatles my question is once sawn will the beatles hatch and leave the wood or will they continue to be problem
Nathan at Out of the Woods has someone he buys blades from that he raves about. I don’t know if you are familiar with Nathan. Check out his UA-cam channel if you want info on the blades he uses. He puts all his info in his descriptions. Love watching your videos.
That log looked a lot like white pine. Was that southern yellow which I though had much smaller knots. I've sawed a lot of mountain white pine and it is very knotty with big knots although occasionally I'll find a deep woods tree with small knots and some clear wood. So who will sharpen your blades now?
Good video. Who dose your blade sharping for you now? I have been cutting full 2x4s for the house I am building. I’m running the LT 35 hydro. I now have all the lumber cut to for the house. The mill has well payed for itself.
I have LT15 but roll or push it like your old LT10. I had wavy cuts, like ripples. Changes the blade same thing. I went faster thru the cuts and it went away. Is there such a thing as too slow? I’m a novice 20 hours on a mill.
After wrestling those logs, working those boards and handling that lumber all day...sure makes a bisquit 🍞and honey taste 😋 real good at dinner time ! ♨️🥩🍽🥕🍅🥦🥬 🌽👍🤣💯✌🥁
Yes, it gets pretty gummed up. These logs are green, but they've been sitting for a while and they're not particularly pitchy. I'm getting a little buildup but not enough to worry about.
I don't think I've got it figured out yet. I could spend an hour per log and get every board, stick, and toothpick possible. Or I can plow through them and get the best out of the log in about 20 minutes. Sometimes it's worth it in time to just get the best out of the log and move on.
There has got to be a decent market for good sized old growth wood beams. They ain’t cheap. I imagine you could make a few hundred bucks with a few hours of milling.
well that was a good tip, if your not going to sharpen well let someone else do it ,, lol in the wise words of an old Clint Eastwood movie " mans got to know his limitations" 👍🤔🤔😵 ... blessings to ya
Good question. Cants are the squared off "log" or timber that you get right before you start making the final cuts. So, on this one I made 3 cants that were 4" wide, then I flipped it and started cutting 2" at a time to make 2x4s.
How do you handle the pith on your logs? I found that when I include it on a board it never ends up being straight. They curve, split, twist and get really wonky.
Odd, I have had a local Home Depot ask if I wanted true or dimensional when I went for some 2 by 4s a few years back. Though for anything that would be custom I would go across the road from that HD, a lumber store that only does custom cuts. You tell them, dimensions ( unfinished ) including length and they cut it and deliver.
Couldn't you cut more lumber (boards) and get more from the log by making your first cuts thinner as opposed to squaring off to a cant.... there appears to be an awful lot of waste by what I can see.
If you look at the size of the log at the head of the mill you'll notice that it's a fair amount smaller than the size at the foot of the mill. That's why there appears to be a ton of waste. Also, it's usually more time efficient for me to make larger cuts and get the best out of the log, without trying to make a ton of cuts to get every possible board out of it.
i bought a dozen 2 x 4s at home depot. i put them on my shop floor and 2 days later 2 of them twisted and warped to the point that i couldnt use them. i fully understand that wood will do this but ive been using that garbage wood for a long time and to me it seems that the quality of all the box store wood has gone downhill. the prices have not. oh how i wish i owned my own sawmill lol.
my shop floor is covered with quality Vinal. they were neatly stacked due to my O.C.D. lol. i do understand that wood will move as it drys and when i mill it allowing the inner stresses to release. maybe its just me but the quality of wood seems to be going down hill.
I know your a young man . You need to step up to a mill that you don’t have to put forth the effort you do. You are going to find yourself injured before you know it. You can only do this for so long. Step up to a easier mill before it’s too late. Food for THOUGHT????????

Wow Robert, I sure am sorry to hear that about your wife. I'm thankful the videos at least made those dark days a bit brighter.
I really love watching you work the sawmill. It's so relaxing and entertaining. Please keep them coming.
Thanks for sharing, my friend !!
Your video was still very interesting to me. Lord Bless you and your family !!
Sorry sharpening din't work out. I have Wood-Mizer sharpener & setter I'm so happy i got it! One blade sharpened & set 15 minuets. Great video.

Thanks, Mac!
watching you turn those logs makes me glad I have the LT35 hydraulic. Good job. Ron
You are definitely in a better place with a hydraulic mill!
I still enjoyed your video, Wes !! Thanks for sharing !!
Another great video Wes! Some nice 2x4's there. Good luck with sorting the Porch out - stay safe & well. 👍👍

Another great video buddy!! Just watch that back!! That was a beast to roll by yourself!! Appreciate what you do. Always enjoy the videos.
Enjoy your video's! Keep up the great work! 👍
Wes, The title of the video was dead bang on. Those were some good looking 2 xs. That Werner won't let you down.
Ha!
God bless you for taking the time out...
tell what a sawmill like this is a young man sawmill that for sure you pretty much doing all heavy lifting , great video thanks for sharing with us
I admire your many skills with the mill. The rough outside cuts are firewood for you?
Nice triple cant flip! Thank you for another great video!
The absolute best investment homesteaders/farmers could ever make is a purchase of a portable sawmill.
Nicely done 👍👍👍Thanks for sharing

That's a bit of a trek from here. Crazy what lumber prices have done.
@@falllineridge I understand. Have a BLESSED DAY !🙏
I would love to have all of your sawdust. Great for making compost piles. Please show the repairs of your porch. Thank you.
Depending on where you are, find a sawmiller and reach out to them. In my area, all the sawmill folks have trouble getting rid of their sawdust.
@@njkay0033 thanks for the idea. Compost here I come.

Great video... An idea... Try attaching a hook (like the one on your cant hook) your log loading winch, and try using your winch to rotate your logs.
I tried it once, didn't work. Plus the winch isn't mounted any more because I use the tractor to load logs.
You have some nice 2x4's to work with.

That's so cool. I need a mill but so many other things to do first!
I totally understand that.

What sort of wood is this log?

Do you sell the edges as firewood?
What device do you record videos with?

Good to see you back in action, nice lumber!
How long is that can't hook?
Love your office space 😍
Its the longest one WM sells I think. 72 maybe?
Timberwolves blades are the best in my opinion they even sharpen them for cheap
great video
Do you ever find juvenile snakes under the pine bark?😊

Wes, do you ever cut green pine? If so how does the sap affect your blades?
Yes, it gets pretty gummed up. These logs are green, but they've been sitting for a while and they're not particularly pitchy. I'm getting a little buildup but not enough to worry about.
@@falllineridge I just had 4 big pines cut in my yard and was wondering how long to wait before milling.
How long did it take you to figure out how to get maximum yield out of a log? Love your videos and never miss watching each one!

What happened to the shed expansion?
Still trying to get some 21' 2x12s! Hope to have some updates soon.
Amazing how much waste to make a few boards ?????
I can smell that wood. I love the smell of freshly cut wood.
No video with the new ladder?? 😕...Lol!
Dang! Those boards have some big ole knots! 😳
Yeah they do, not the clearest boards ever.

When you refer to cants are those pieces you “can’t” use? Probably a stupid question but I’ve heard you say that before and never known what it means.
Good question. Cants are the squared off "log" or timber that you get right before you start making the final cuts. So, on this one I made 3 cants that were 4" wide, then I flipped it and started cutting 2" at a time to make 2x4s.

I don't worry about it. I cut the whole log, stack the boards, and if a board ends up drying funky I just don't use it.
Missed these. Going to watch the whole thing tonight. They help me sleep!!
You need to check replies you have a nasty spammer.

New old mill beams
With nearly 275000 sub's, might be time to upgrade the sawmill.
It’s a 16 month wait on a LT40. I waited 10 months just for an LX55.
Can you run a chainsaw chain on that machine ?

DUMB QUESTION OF THE DAY: DO THE OFF CUTS FROM THE LOGS BECOME YOUR FIRE WOOD OR DO THEY JUST GO INTO THE BONFIRE PILE ??
If we could find them at Home Depot, we wouldn’t be able to afford them! Lumber prices are beyond ridiculous.
That's a fact.
👍
looks like you have a lot of logs to mill

laying wood on a concrete floor without blocks can do that, especially to wet pressure treated, as it will then dry unequally,
