my friends and I migrated to discord because skype was so phenomenally broken. For one of my friends it wouldn't even show if a group call was going so they would occasionally just click on the call button randomly to see if it would connect him to an ongoing call.
Makes sense to be consistent with other programs being used, such as if you're text editor has a white background, or the webpages you visit, or your Windows/Linux theme. Considering that the default for many other applications is a light theme, it makes sense to change it to be consistent.
I use Discord because all my friends refuse to use skype anymore because they hate it for reasons they can't actually explain to me. It's awful (better now than it was just a few months ago, but still, it's terrible)
Yeah i mean most gamers wouldnt really care about a little bit of sound quality, i want to know if its effecting my gameplay. (Teamspeak, runs way better for me)
@@fietae but matrix has to be covered, its just too revolutionary and very important in the current age of communication. matrix has bridges which can make moving to it easy since you don't have to go through the task of migrating all your friends over to another platform (thats usually a hard task)
What I really like about TS (that mumble would also do for me) is that since it is locally hosted, I can connect to other PCs on my local network without using the internet connection at all. As a result, the very limited bandwith that we have at our house (especially the upstream that is important in multiplayer games and gets used heavily by voicechats) is fully available for the game clients on the PCs in the house. As soon as you get multiple PCs online, this can actually reduce in-game lag noticeably, and during the time where our internet would sometimes drop out, we could still talk via TeamSpeak, meaning we didn't have to leave our chairs and go through the annoying process of real-world communication.
are you the type of guy hosting massive lan parties at your house without actually providing a proper internet connection? or how can I understand this?
In my opinion, Discord is the best, with comfortable icons and options, and it is also easier to use, and the robotty voice only happens now when your wifi is really bad, I use Discord more than a year, and it has only happened about 5 times.
Imho comparing Discord and Teamspeak or any other voice platforms is similar to comparing between Linux and Windows or OSX, all have their advantages, all have their own levels of user-friendliness, etc etc Can't really compare one platform to another when they attract different types of users (Discord for more casual/general users, Teamspeak for administrators who want more customizations, Skype for.. People who use them, etc).
I was thinking cursevoice... The greatest voice quality and doesn't send random mic signals ever and I meant twitch voice or ear the fuck it's called now
Over the 1000+ hours I've used Discord, I've never had that "No Route" issue. I've had my internet go out a few times (and then I saw RTC Connecting), but that doesn't count. I don't think that's an issue for most people (me being one of them). EDIT: I use US East and Central servers. I'm not in the EU. I don't think this is a US problem (maybe US West specifically?)
GamingOcto - osu! and Stuff if you have bad internet or are on a vpn you will get it, also I think you will get errors like that if you have a lower spec cpu and the usage gets full
yea, i've been using discord since around fall 2015 and never had that problem, the only time i get problems is when my internet poops out, or they're having server problems.
I did actually get that problem back then but its been several months if not over a year since I had that problem last time and it seems to be working alright now. Other than that I pretty much love discord.
Man, I don't know if it's only here on Brazil, but the Discord audio quality it's veeeery bad, my friends voice are always lagging, with a huge delay and sometimes the mic simply is not detected by Discord.
Not even comparing how easy they are to invite others. Discord did it for me, when you could make a short-link and send to teammates in overwatch (when the voice chat was unreliable). They didn't even need Discord installed !!
Benjamin Andersen that web shit is annoying. I feel bad when I dont wanna join a discord but I can't use I don't have the program installed excuse to dodge xd.
Nothing here! TS doesn't allow you to join without TS installed, which is what he is talking about. Not only is the link shortened, but it doesn't need to be installed, and you can invite to only specific channel as well. Both of which you cannot do on TS.
Pei Gao Well it's more so that it removes the excuse the "I don't have TS installed" shit people try to pull. I personally have no issues memorizing our server link. It's permanent one, and I have memorized, but I am good at memorizing random numbers and letters likes that, all my passwords are like that. That said, you can buy a redirect link, just like you can for TS3.
@Sujieun Teamspeak does not work in a way that can possible allow that in anyway. TS devs dont control your server or IP, that is all done by hosting services, or if you host yourself. That is server side stuff, through a host or on your own. It has zero to do with TS in anyway.
My computer had a problem: thermal throttling. It affected severely the sound quality on discord with metallic sound and constant stuttering. Teamspeak always worked me perfectly in all conditions My laptop was fixed and this problems has almost disappeared but sometimes discord seems to fail again. It's not perfect I think this review lacks the resource and network usage data for each program. Also, performance on low end machines, impact on CPU usage and dependency of consistent CPU frequency since this problem was very noticeable on my laptop Also, Discord uses TOO MUCH CPU if I enable the camera. Although I think it's a bug.
+TheJaviJB I've noticed Discord uses way less CPU and RAM then Skype does in every possible way, but once you start screen sharing? Might as well forget it. Even in the largest of groups and calling with 25 people in it, screen sharing to all of them still won't max out your CPU while using skype (even with audio being transmitted) but on Discord? Even doing with 1 person maxes it out, and doing it with 10 people in a group just makes it worse. I'm not sure if it's because the Discord dev's never optimized the screen sharing ability, or if it's just still in beta, but it's extremely annoying.
Nighterlev Screen sharing still needs work overall. It can't capture fullscreen windows and doesn't seem to work in Linux at all at the moment(the web view just restarts when attempting). If you ask me, screen sharing is not a finished feature right now.
Why didn't we mention about ease of entry?! Teamspeak also doesn't have a web app compared to discord. So I am a random person, but I can join discord through a simple link and account registration and then talk with a whole community ON A WEB BROWSER while keeping relatively good quality? No wonder so many people use discord.
Xilphex But if u have teamspeak u can click on an link 2. Yes. You CAN use it with your web browser. But why the fuck should u do that ? U like less options and bad sounds ?
Not sure if this was touched on, I want to say yes because I might have missed it briefly but the one big advantage that teamspeak has over discord which is the ability to communicate via cross channels which is especially useful for gaming. Here is a good example of why this is useful. I used to play in an organization called 21st century warfare AKA 21CW for battlefield 1942/vietnam/2/3 called that was setup not quite like a clan but more like a tournament where you joined and were assigned to one of two divisions and from there to one of 5 companies where both divisions would go head to head every Saturday for 12 hours of the day (There were a lot of people so not everyone played for 12 hours). Teamspeak was the best and only viable option (especially during 2000's era when BF1942 first came out) as each company would be divided up into their respective channels, with the division air-force in its own channel as well as the division commanders in theirs. Each company leader would designate themselves as a "red" icon instead of green (forget the actual name of the option) which allowed the Company leaders be able to talk with command, airforce and other company leaders while staying in thier company channel with his/her company/squad. This allowed for organized communication without too much chatter from everyone being piled into the same channel as most normally would in discord, where nobody can hear a thing as everyone talks over each other. Hence the name "Teamspeak" Not 100% sure if Discord is capable of this as well as teamspeak is but would love to see it become an option as it becomes an inconvience for players having two use both voice apps as one is great for organizations and clans where the other is great for communication in a game that has more than 24 players on each team, especially 32 or 64 players but isn't even half as popular and twice as hard to learn to use.
@@ascpixi Nope because it is anti user friendly plus its not basic. Other ones are simple to join and go this one wants web addresses to join servers while making it sound like it wants something special or a search for the server. Other voice chats want whole addresses but it is clear they want the server address and you enter the whole web address or the whole IP number. You get it and The End.
I remember a while back when I was playing competitive World of Tanks, after one of the two simultaneous battles was over, that whole channel joined ours, and it was just USER HAS ENTERED YOU CHANNEL for like 30 seconds straight, which cost us the battle as no one could here the calls. The caller got so pissed and raged for the rest of the night.
That would have been pretty important, especially talking about Skype, hah. Also a VERY important thing is encryption... this is very important and not brought up, no?
feature that is so important and still missing in discord is the Channel Commander and possibility to install Addon, like TaskForceRadio to work inside Arma 3 or 2, thats why a lot of ppl still in Ts3
Another aspect would be latency. From what i heard from other competitive gamers, mumble is preferred because other voice chat platforms, especially discord, have higher latency. Kind of a niche aspect, but whatever.
I came here to say the same thing. I host my own mumble server in a nearby datacenter. For both security and latency. Also, he did not mention what configurations were used for mumble. OPUS? Was the max bitrate changed in the server settings? Mumble does exactly what I want, low latency voice chat. I don't need the text features, I already have Steam, Facebook, Snapchat, SMS, hangouts.. etc.. if someone wants to send me a link while offline. But this is my specific needs and use case. Discord does have some nice features.
He also didn't mention network bandwith or CPU/RAM usage. I personnally see my CPU spike ~ 10 % (in the task manager) everytime I talk in discord. But Im not using it anymore, so I dont really care to be honest
or maybe you mistook what he said like most others and didn't realize he was saying mumble was being compared to the others, not that mumble itself was poor quality.
He also hasn't figured out Mumble has an overlay mode that shows the whole window, just like teamspeak. You have to map a button to "toggle overlay", which is admittedly not straight forward, but it does exist.
And discord has a slider to increase bandwith for audio and in the user setting overlay possibility per game. in 2017 you shouldn't have to Bother with config scripts unless you are on Linux.
no, it is the thruth. i use linux a lot, on school(IT in the netherlands, MBO niv 4), and if you really wanna tweak it, you need to go into the scripts, but these are system files, to manipulate the OS or Kernel to do what you need it to, because an OS is made for every group of users all at once, so if you are an advanced user, needing functionality, that not everyone will understand, that might be a good tool. a chat program should just have everything built in, easy to reach. this was maybe not possible in aerlier days because of HW or SW constraints, but now, it should definetly, and has proven to be, possible. and if it does not have all the functionality you require of it, well either go to a platform that does have that. or, expand on the functionality by adding a bot, or making a bot, if you are an advanced enough user/programmer. not having to aquire built in functionality, that you should be able to reach by an options menu, to go into vital scripts, and edit something that someone might not fully understand. it is about making it simple for the normal users and making it tweakble for the people that do know how to.
Good job covering security, encryption, and the potential for information selling. I wish you would have included Matrix-based programs, like Riot. Riot has End to End encryption, is free, has permissions on par with Discord, but their UI simply isn't as pleasant as Discord or Skype. It has video calling (but not innate screen-sharing that I could find, like Discord) and uses Opus Voice, so it's identical to TeamSpeak and Discord in audio quality. It's a little confusing to start using Riot.
Rossko for me discord takes 30-40 seconds to open up for me. I've tried putting it on my ssd, but that doesn't help. This is my gaming pc so it's hardware isn't a problem. It's probably discord takes longer to connect.
welcome to 2024, where Discords decides several times a day to NOT recognize your mic anymore, so you gotta unpug it, close DC, replug the mic, go to sound setting, change the sen slider on the mic setting and restart DC so it finally works again, now do this thrice a day and this is where my experience is at right now... DC just keeps getting worse litterally with every update they shit out apparently just for the sake of shareholders... as soon as I can convince my cirlce to drop DC I'm gone... miss the old Skype and TS times.
Discord is the best out there atm, I get teamspeak is good and as a gamer my guild has used it in the past but discord for now is free and has a built in overlay so you don't need that bloatware piece of garbage Overwolf unlike teamspeak. Also never had any issues with routing or robot sounds as mentioned by Linus mind you I am in the EU and not the US.

bluesdealer Sounds like your paranoid. You're not any more special than other people, why would they care about you or your data? Millions use Discord, your just one of the ants were everyone does the same shit.
You should most likely change Discord's KBPS voice setting to the default, this makes discord sound slightly worse, but it makes up for that by lowering robottyness
I have knowledge of VoIP; I still use Discord more than any other social media similar to it. You see, Skype and--partially--TeamSpeak were my only two options for years and years. I was seriously hoping that one day something like Discord would be created. The first minute I heard that there was a brand new platform of social media, I hopped out of Skype and TS faster than lightning without having to think twice about it. I don't need more customizability just because I know how to work myself around the apps I use, I just want something more simple... and modern.
I know right? Back in the day TS2 was used for competitive matches on COD4 and many other shooters but never god-awful Skype... Guess it’s easier to use so that’s what the kids go
0:00 - "In the beginning was TeamSpeak" - and 2 years before the beginning, there was "Roger Wilco!". I didn't even learn of the Existence of Teamspeak before Version 2.0.
james elliott Because I think for most PC gamers it's gonna be irrelevant. I used to play on a 2.2ghz AMD cpu laptop with integrated graphics, and the frame difference while Discord was open was anywhere from none to 2 frames at most. Now that I have an actual gaming PC, Discord can eat all the resources it wants and it won't affect me one bit no matter how bad it gets. Granted, I have a high-end system, but you couldn't get too much worse than my old PC for gaming, and that thing ran it perfectly fine.
It doesn't really matter. I used to play on a piece of shit laptop, 1.8ghz dual core cpu with integrated graphics, 4gb ram. Basically below the min requirements for all modern games. I was using discord while playing csgo and skyrim, the difference wasn't noticeable.
People are saying that people still use discord in 2020, that's because now it has improved, can give you better audio and it's server calls are 24/7 when u can join and leave at any time. It also has a lot of customisation.
if you didn't know there is an option in the settings on discord, in the appearance tab, called Hardware Acceleration. what it does is "Turns on(or off) Hardware Acceleration which uses GPU to make Discord Smoother. Turn this off is you are experiencing FPS drops in game" So if your GPU isn't REALLY good and the games you are playing push it near it's limit turning this off will help a lot. This is literally the only thing that bugged me about discord is that this is on by default. Turning it off gave me back at least 5-10 fps on PUBG so try turning that off and see if it helps.
I have used each one of these extensively. So I thought I would give my thoughts on each one. Skype: it's borderline adware/malware and is a phantom app I can't seem to get rid of being as Microsoft owns it and always tries to remind me to use it. Not good in 2017 even though I and a lot of others appreciated using it in 2012-2014. Teamspeak: on PC it is nice to use. But it has a steep learning curve that I don't think caters to casual gamers. I used teamspeak when I was on a GTA forum. They had teamspeak integrated into their site and it was easy to use that way. If you want to connect to teamspeak on mobile however, there is a paid app you have to use which isn't ideal. Teamspeak is also closed source which brings me to... Mumble: mumble seemed like a breath of fresh air. I first used mumble on a Minecraft server where they used mumble's positional audio plug in which let users connect to the server and you will here players at different levels depending how far away they were in game. This was very neat and interesting in my opinion. Mumble also being open source also let a few members of the community to make interactive bots that we could play around with. There is also a free app (Plumble) in the play store. We still use mumble occasionally but it has been taken over by... Discord: discord in my eyes is king. The app is well designed. There are many features and it has easy learning curve. I have never had an experience with dropped audio in discord. Discord as a chat app is beautiful as well. There are options to add bots that give many interactive features to play around with. The web hooks feature allows users to create their own bots that can do simply incredible things. There is one chat bot in a few discord servers I'm in that broadcasts in game text chat into discord. Discord is definitely the best app out of all these. There is really no "preference" to be had. Its free, easy to use, beautiful UI, many features.
NerdyPi all of these services can use their data however they want. However, when you use mumble and teamspeak you are giving whoever owns the server your IP address which may freak people out. Skype had that issue for years. Discord, as far as I know, doesn't have that issue so it's a lot more safe.
speak to people in fucking person if your scared of a company using or storing the data from speaking? if thats what there/your implying. discord is the most easiest straight to app there even for phone but my phone is lacking so so audio quality on it isnt best but the sheer time saving by doing 2 clicks to speaking to whoever i was last trying to speak to. TS3 is behind but is becoming outdated to me
Daniel Barragues If you have Windows 10, and maybe 8 also, when you uninstall Skype you'll get a popup after a couple of weeks saying "Skype has been updated! Enjoy!" and when you look, it's been reinstalled right under your nose. The icing on top is that it immediately begins running in the background. There are ways around letting it reinstall but as far as I know, they're all third party methods. I've made sure mine never comes back, but your average user may not know what's what.
At least with teamspeak you know where your info is going, audio quality is roughly the same. teamspeak and discord are roughly the same but discords UI is a little easier for the normies.
I have but only on a really old wifi router that had tons of packet loss. Once I upgraded to an internet setup from this decade, I had no problems. You may also get degraded service while downloading at high speeds, and Discord does seem more sensitive to this than other voice chat platforms I've used (Teamspeak, Skype) - but again, this problem was fixed for me by upgrading the router, so YMMV.

Makes sense to be consistent with other programs being used, such as if you're text editor has a white background, or the webpages you visit, or your Windows/Linux theme. Considering that the default for many other applications is a light theme, it makes sense to change it to be consistent.

You should do a 2022 update since the majority of these other platforms don’t get used. I’d be interested if you included Guilded, Revolt and Matrix.
I think their lineup would be more like including teams and zoom, rather than "revolt" or "matrix" that are completely unknown

Imho comparing Discord and Teamspeak or any other voice platforms is similar to comparing between Linux and Windows or OSX, all have their advantages, all have their own levels of user-friendliness, etc etc
Can't really compare one platform to another when they attract different types of users (Discord for more casual/general users, Teamspeak for administrators who want more customizations, Skype for.. People who use them, etc).

King Lobster can country people play pc ?💯🤙🏻🤙🏻
Discord also has a number of easy to use, setup and add bots. I was able to code, install and use my first bot in about half an hour.
Theres a new option now Teamspeak website even offer. Allowing you a free DNS example your ip 1.22.33.44 can just be NameTS or something like that
@Sujieun
Teamspeak does not work in a way that can possible allow that in anyway.

Teamspeak always worked me perfectly in all conditions
My laptop was fixed and this problems has almost disappeared but sometimes discord seems to fail again. It's not perfect
I think this review lacks the resource and network usage data for each program. Also, performance on low end machines, impact on CPU usage and dependency of consistent CPU frequency since this problem was very noticeable on my laptop
Also, Discord uses TOO MUCH CPU if I enable the camera. Although I think it's a bug.
+TheJaviJB
I've noticed Discord uses way less CPU and RAM then Skype does in every possible way, but once you start screen sharing? Might as well forget it. Even in the largest of groups and calling with 25 people in it, screen sharing to all of them still won't max out your CPU while using skype (even with audio being transmitted) but on Discord? Even doing with 1 person maxes it out, and doing it with 10 people in a group just makes it worse.
I'm not sure if it's because the Discord dev's never optimized the screen sharing ability, or if it's just still in beta, but it's extremely annoying.
Nighterlev
Screen sharing still needs work overall.

No wonder so many people use discord.

Only retards think the web joining is a +... discord uses you like a tool and "shares" ( sells) millions of peoples data. They own you
Xilphex But if u have teamspeak u can click on an link 2.
Hence the name "Teamspeak"
Not 100% sure if Discord is capable of this as well as teamspeak is but would love to see it become an option as it becomes an inconvience for players having two use both voice apps as one is great for organizations and clans where the other is great for communication in a game that has more than 24 players on each team, especially 32 or 64 players but isn't even half as popular and twice as hard to learn to use.
Teamspeak 5 is on the way. I guess Discord made them update their software.
How. Discord is trash. I mostly find people who don't know how to use voice chat on there.

You forgot to mention that you can add bots for music, steam info etc to Discord. That's something you should consider
Please Kill Me you can do the same on ts
Sorry didnt know
You cannot do it on skype in an integrated fashion.. You have to fake the bot as being a real user.
(Not to mention such bots rarely have any meaningful use and most servers don't use them)
On discord, you can limit the number of channels. It is the host's fault there are more than one.

Latency, CPU usage, bandwidth usage? Linus FFS, do it properly!
Yea like if skype used 2% ,more of you cpu you going to notice 1 - 1.5 fps drop if even that come on.

Yeah, seeing as latency was the primary reason mumble was made in the first place, it's probably something that should have been looked at.
Mumble is also open source software :)
Yeah, I want my voice comms to use as few resources (memory CPU, bandwith) as possible while still ensuring low latency.
It sounds like you only changed the client side quality settings in mumble and never touched maximum supported settings in the server config.
or maybe you mistook what he said like most others and didn't realize he was saying mumble was being compared to the others, not that mumble itself was poor quality.
"config scripts unless you are on linux" do you just blow out strings of words to sound smart and victorious?
no, it is the thruth. i use linux a lot, on school(IT in the netherlands, MBO niv 4), and if you really wanna tweak it, you need to go into the scripts, but these are system files, to manipulate the OS or Kernel to do what you need it to, because an OS is made for every group of users all at once, so if you are an advanced user, needing functionality, that not everyone will understand, that might be a good tool. a chat program should just have everything built in, easy to reach. this was maybe not possible in aerlier days because of HW or SW constraints, but now, it should definetly, and has proven to be, possible. and if it does not have all the functionality you require of it, well either go to a platform that does have that. or, expand on the functionality by adding a bot, or making a bot, if you are an advanced enough user/programmer. not having to aquire built in functionality, that you should be able to reach by an options menu, to go into vital scripts, and edit something that someone might not fully understand. it is about making it simple for the normal users and making it tweakble for the people that do know how to.

No performance in latency/processing/RAM? Seems a bit off for Linus _tech_ tips

I don't need more customizability just because I know how to work myself around the apps I use, I just want something more simple... and modern.

Did you seriously forget to talk about which is the lightest to run while gaming? How is that not one of the top reasons to get one or the others....
james elliott Because I think for most PC gamers it's gonna be irrelevant.
It's pretty much irrelevant on a pc today.
Yeah, but if you run skype for some reason.... that needs taking about....
Because it doesn't matter as we all have great PCs that can run our game and our favoured voice chat software
It doesn't really matter. I used to play on a piece of shit laptop, 1.8ghz dual core cpu with integrated graphics, 4gb ram. Basically below the min requirements for all modern games. I was using discord while playing csgo and skyrim, the difference wasn't noticeable.
Linus. Why didnt you talk about the sound delay? Isnt that the most importent thing for a gamer?
People are saying that people still use discord in 2020, that's because now it has improved, can give you better audio and it's server calls are 24/7 when u can join and leave at any time. It also has a lot of customisation.
I absolutley love how easy to use and user friendly discord is but when playing games i prefer using teamspeak because it doesnt lag
if you didn't know there is an option in the settings on discord, in the appearance tab, called Hardware Acceleration. what it does is "Turns on(or off) Hardware Acceleration which uses GPU to make Discord Smoother.
Chris Hills thanks so much bro for helping me out
Mind if I ask what your gpu is?
There is still a little bit of preference because some people don't like that Discord could possibly use their data in ways they don't want.

If you have Windows 10, and maybe 8 also, when you uninstall Skype you'll get a popup after a couple of weeks saying "Skype has been updated!
I've never had any of the problems you guys had with discord
I have but only on a really old wifi router that had tons of packet loss. Once I upgraded to an internet setup from this decade, I had no problems. You may also get degraded service while downloading at high speeds, and Discord does seem more sensitive to this than other voice chat platforms I've used (Teamspeak, Skype) - but again, this problem was fixed for me by upgrading the router, so YMMV.
Me neither. Never have I gotten this "No Route" error and barely any other error for that matter.
It's 2021 and discord is about to be visited of the reaper of death also known as Microsoft . May our doomed friend rest in peace
